Elizabeth Olsen jazzes up the look of her little black dress
20 December 2011
Elizabeth Olsen is the younger sister of the famous Olsen twins, and she has been making waves in the film industry, and more recently, on the red carpet. At an appearance at the New York Film Festival, the actress sported one of her favorite little black dresses that showed just how easy it can be to accessorize with this functional backdrop.
Olsen's dress was a halter-top style that featured an opulent strap which hung around her neck and was form-fitting throughout the bodice. The skirt was a mixture of sleek and ruffled materials that added a touch of texture to her look.
To pull her outfit together, Olsen wore copper accessories in the form of an embellished belt, a bracelet and jeweled platform heels. She kept her makeup style simple and wore a bright and bold shade of red lipstick to add a finishing touch to her ensemble.
When you're shopping for homecoming dresses or formal dresses this fall, a black dress could be the ideal choice if you've built up a collection of chic accessories. The backdrop can create an unrivaled sense of uniformity and allow any hue to come to the forefront.
Lightening up your fall formal ensembles
19 December 2011
Now that the leaves are changing, the fashion world is starting the transition from bright and bold colors of summer to the deep and rich hues of autumn. While this will certainly open up style choices for those who are fans of neutral ensembles, it can be a tough season for ladies who are looking for something a bit more bold from their outfit.
If you're looking to stand out from the crowd this fall, there are a number of vibrant pops of color you can add to your look. No matter the cut of your formal dress, a hair accessory can really tie your look together. Consider some colorful hair ties, bows or even a faux flower for an added focal point.
Pairing bracelets and earrings with one another is also a popular choice, so try to combine similar materials and colors. This style works beautifully with a strapless formal gown, and it will help create uniformity and contrast for your ensemble.
The fall fashion season comes with its own set of challenges, but you can jazz up your evening dresses and cocktail dresses with a few fabulous embellishments.

Salma Hayek Pinault showcases an intriguing way of wearing navy this winter
14 December 2011
Navy blue is one of the most common hues of the impending fashion season, as it has an uncanny ability to blend with other neutral hues, accessories and elegant footwear. Salma Hayek Pinault recently wore a similar ensemble to the premiere of her new film, Puss in Boots.
Hayek Pinault wore a taffeta dress, which is an opulent choice for ladies who want to avoid the style of a plunging neckline while still being able to wear a classic shape. The formal dress blended a number of ornate black straps across her shoulders and around the length of the bodice to create instant contrast.
To pull her entire look together, Hayek Pinault wore a wonderfully chic pair of patent leather heels. She also wore a pair of navy blue teardrop earrings and a few gold bangles for a spectacular mix of streamlined color and unexpected sparkle.
When you're shopping for a formal gown or evening dresses this fall, be sure to look for neutral accents that can provide contrast with your accessories and versatile base hues that will bring them to the forefront.

Cardigans are also a welcome pairing with little black dresses or bright and cheery cocktail dresses. A good rule of thumb is to wear complementary colors or a similar shade to your outfit to add some visual interest to your attire.

Color blocking with your cosmetics can perk up the look of your formal wear
12 December 2011
Color blocking is a hot trend in the fashion world that refers to combining complementary colors to varying shades of the same hue to create a dynamic ensemble. While this is easy to accomplish with a formal dress and accessories, it's far more difficult to do so with cosmetics.
Heidi Klum is known for making waves on the red carpet, and the model recently tried the trend on for size at the TeenNick Halo Awards in Los Angeles, California. The model's choice of short dresses was a gorgeous black and emerald number that combined beautifully with her peep-toe heels and black bracelets.
Where her look really stood out was in the form of eye makeup. She applied a touch of green eyeshadow on her lower lid and then used sparkling pink on the upper lid, and with lip gloss. The combination of the two hues gave her ensemble an uncanny warmth that made it absolutely stunning.
Cosmetics can be your best friend when you're out shopping for evening dresses this fall, so keep these potential combinations in mind before you pick out the perfect outfit.
Anna Paquin showcases unique style choices with her pink cocktail dress
8 December 2011
Anna Paquin, star of HBO's hit show True Blood, was one of the many celebrities in attendance at the recent Point Honors gala in Los Angeles. The actress sported one of the most fabulous pink evening dresses around, but it was her unique cosmetic and accessory choices that turned a typical ensemble into a dazzling outfit.
Paquin took her bright pink formal dress and gave it a unique twist with black accessories. She wore a shimmering satin black belt around her waist and paired it with a pair of black pumps that created dynamic uniformity and contrast for her ensemble.
To top off her look, Paquin gave it a bold touch by wearing some edgy black nail polish and opting for plenty of eyeliner and mascara. The result was a sweet, mysterious and altogether ravishing look that combined multiple style elements into an enchanting package.
Accessories can make your outfit shine with little effort. When you're shopping for homecoming dresses and cute cocktail dresses this fall, be sure to envision what you'll pair them with to make the best choice.
Attending a charity benefit in the near future? Throw on your best formal gown
7 December 2011
Now that the holiday season is on the horizon, there will be many formal charity benefits that will be hosted in areas all around the country. If you feel like supporting a worthy cause and showing off your fashion sense, it may be time to head out shopping for a formal dress to be one of the best-dressed ladies at the ball.
There are many options when it comes to formal gowns, but first you need to decide on a color. Autumn is known for its rich and bold colors, so avoid the bright and cheery hues and instead go for a deep hue like burgundy, navy blue or a neutral shade.
When you've decided on a base color, it's time to think about your accessories. Since this is a formal occasion, you don't want your ensemble to be too gaudy, so pick a few pieces to accentuate. A pair of tassel earrings is a great choice that can be paired with darker cuff bracelets for added contrast.
With a charity dinner on the horizon, now is the ideal time to invest in evening dresses that will wow all the other people in attendance.

This was a great choice and it instantly made her outfit look streamlined and uniform against her neutral backdrop. As for her makeup choices, she kept it simple with nude eyeshadow and a soft pink lip color to allow her dress to be the star.

Young ladies everywhere are probably trying to wrap their heads around how they can dress to impress on those chilly nights without having to bundle up and sacrifice beauty. This lovely number was divided in the middle by a leather black belt and topped off with an exquisite diamond necklace.
Ladies who wish to make waves at events that involve music and dancing might want to choose the luxurious party dresses that work best for the indoors, no matter how cold it is outside. After all, there is usually plenty of heat to go around in such venues!
Salma Hayek Pinault effortlessly combines three neutrals into her ensemble
4 December 2011
It's not often that you can create a compelling outfit with three of the most common neutral colors, but Salma Hayek Pinault recently found a way at the Los Angeles premiere of Puss in Boots. The actress wore a dazzling formal dress that combined beige, brown and black into a refreshingly simple ensemble.
Hayek Pinault's choice of short dresses merged varying hues and fabrics into one outfit. The front of her formal dress was a sleek black, framed by a strip of brown and then wrapped in the back by a beige material. The one-strap number sat just above her knee and she finished it off with a matching brown belt at her waist.
Like many of the hottest celebrities on the red carpet, Hayek Pinault chose a pair of black peep-toe pumps to finish off her outfit. It added up to a calm and carefree look that used a few of the season's most versatile color choices.
With the holiday formal season on the horizon, look for evening dresses in warm neutrals that can open up your accessory and footwear choices to make some waves at your next social event.
Amanda Seyfried dazzles at red carpet event
3 December 2011
Patterned short dresses have become one of the most popular trends in the fashion world, and actress Amanda Seyfried recently pulled off the style magnificently. Seyfried attended the Los Angeles premiere of In Time, and she wore a stunningly fresh design that was an enchanting mixture of bold colors and metallic fabrics.
Seyfried's dress featured a silver backdrop that was accented by a number of bright blue, purple and black patterns along the front of the formal dress. She wore a dark belt around her waist to highlight the hue in her dress and paired it with peep-toe pumps for a delightful bit of contrast.
What really stood out about Seyfried's look was her eye makeup. Normally, it's not the best choice to pair an eyeshadow color with an outfit, but her smoky eye look was a dramatic take that brought out the best in her attire.
Short dresses are fabulous choices for the fall, but the temperature may change up your wardrobe. Keep a leather jacket handy to stay warm and add a bold edge to your look.
Amber Heard color blocks like a pro at the Hollywood Film Festival
2 December 2011
Amber Heard has become the darling of best-dressed lists across the country, and her most recent ensemble that she wore at the Hollywood Film Festival spoke volumes about her fashion sense. The actress chose a two-toned formal dress that allowed her to color block with similar hues quite easily.
Color blocking refers to combining two colors that complement one another or use varying shades of the same hue to create a visual juxtaposition that's hard to replicate. Heard accomplished this through her teal formal gown, which was a lighter color in the bodice and featured a darker shade of teal in the skirt.
Heard then used a soft pink lip color and silver accessories to pull her look together, and let her choice of evening dresses act as the focal point of her ensemble. She also wore a black belt around her waist to show off her figure, and it provided some stunning contrast for her outfit.
If you have a formal event on the horizon this fall, color blocking may be a fabulous way to make a statement. It can be accomplished with varying materials in your dress, or with careful color choices in your accessories.
Jessica Biel goes for a textured white ensemble at FGI Night of Stars gala
1 December 2011
Taking a chance with your fashion choices may result in a fair share of duds, but when this strategy succeeds, you'll be one of the belles of the ball. Jessica Biel did this in spades at the recent FGI Night of Stars gala, where she wore a dazzling white formal dress with oversized, ruffled epaulets.
Biel's formal gown was an elegant choice that offered a whimsical mix of sheer fabric and textured accents. Her ensemble was both opulent and revealing, while the top of her dress featured an opening down the front and was accented on either side by large folds of fabric on her shoulders.
What really made Biel's ensemble stand out was her accessory choices. Of course, anyone will look great with thousands of dollars of diamond bracelets, but it was her metallic feather belt around her waist that became her outfit's focal point.
When you're shopping for evening dresses this fall, don't invest in a white formal dress unless you have the accessories to bring it to life. A gorgeous belt or some textured embellishments can help you stand out from the crowd.
Warm up your winter formal wear with gold accessories
30 November 2011
Freida Pinto can light up a room with her smile, but at the recent Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, it was her outfit and accessory choices that gave the red carpet some uncanny style. Pinto's fuschia formal dress was a fabulous choice for the occasion, but it was given an elegant touch with gold jewelry and embellishments that paired perfectly with her outfit.
At first glance, Pinto's dress looked like a strapless piece, but it featured a small gilded wrap at the top that acted as straps. It featured a slightly elongated tail that trailed behind her on the red carpet and used a loose, billowy fabric that gave her ensemble a soft touch.
It was Pinto's choice of gold bangle bracelets that gave her outfit striking appeal. She paired this with an opulent gold rope belt around her waist that had fringed tassels at the ends. Pinto finished it off with a gold clutch that was a seamless choice for her ensemble.
If you're shopping for evening dresses this fall, add a bit of warmth to your outfit with gold accessories. They can pair effortlessly with neutral colors, but also can perk up the look of softer hues as well.
Would you rock a pantsuit?
29 November 2011
Staying comfortable in autumn can be a challenge, with the weather constantly shifting between uncomfortably hot, unpredictably cool and, every once in a while, that perfect breezy day that you only get a few times a year. Still, when it's just a bit too hot for a floor-length gown but too cold for a minidress, there's one solution only the bold will try: the pantsuit.
Celebs wear pantsuits all the time, but everyday women tend to shy away from this unique and daring option. Everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Celine Deon has rocked a pantsuit on the red carpet, and trust us, you can too. All it takes is plenty of confidence!
Although a much-maligned garment, the pantsuit can actually be very flattering. Long, tailored trousers make you look like you've got legs for days, and a cinched waist will show off the skinniest part of you.
If you're worried about the androgynous aspect of wearing a pantsuit to a formal event, dress up your outfit with lots of girly jewelry. Add a chunky necklace, some sparkling earrings and a few dazzling bracelets to show off your femininity, and pair your pantsuit with high heels for the ultimate sexy gams.
Dare to bare those legs
29 November 2011
The temperature may be starting to fall around the country, but that doesn't mean you need to resign yourself to floor-length gowns for the rest of the year. In fact, a short, flirty minidress is an excellent way to keep things hot, even when the weather starts getting colder. Embrace the last few weeks of summery warmth by opting for a short dress as your next formal event.
You've spent the summer hiking, jogging and playing outdoors, so why not show off what all that fun exercise has done for you? We're not saying you need to opt for a barely-there hemline, but a dress that falls to just above your knees is an easy way to show a little skin while still looking formal and feminine.
If you want to make sure your minidress won't be stuck in the back of your closet as soon as the first snow falls, invest in one with long sleeves. If you keep your arms warm, you'll hardly notice the cold air on your legs. Alternatively, you can also opt for a complementary jacket that you can wear over your dress if you need to hop outside - a mid-length coat will help cover your legs without diminishing your sex appeal.
Midnight train to Georgia
28 November 2011
When you think of a dress with a train, it's hard not to think of a wedding gown. After all, who doesn't want to be wearing a big, white, frilly romantic gown with a train longer than Kate Middleton's as you walk down the aisle, feeling like an absolute princess. But this intriguing visual detail isn't just for matrimonial events - it can work just about anywhere! Singer Ciara decided to sport it on the red carpet - on a white dress, no less!
The singer looked elegant - but far from bridal - in a skintight white minidress with an asymmetrical train draping down the back. She paired the short-sleeved dress with one of spring's hottest accessories - nude pumps - and beachy, soft waves in her hair. Subtle makeup, a pink pucker and gold accessories completed her look.
We can't blame you for feeling a bit nervous to sport something quite so curve-hugging, but the short hem and sexy silhouette are two of the ways Ciara made sure we knew this dress didn't mean she was about to exchange vows with anyone. For another way to make sure your train doesn't scream "wedding," pick a bright, bold hue like electric blue or light green - summer's the perfect time to get away with it.
A flower-printed dress is a chic choice for a bridal shower
22 November 2011
Bridal showers are one of the most fun events on the road to your best friend's nuptials, but it's also a time where you can break out one of your favorite formal dresses and show off your fashion sense. A floral-printed dress is a cheery and vibrant choice that matches the spirit of the occasion, but it will require a few carefully chosen accessories to achieve its true potential.
If your dress is especially bright, opt for the same style in your jewelry choices. A sparkling statement necklace is a fabulous choice that would combine easily with a few bangle bracelets or a matching cocktail ring.
Floral dresses with a neutral background are best served with gold or silver jewelry, as they can make the most out of the backdrop. Open-toed footwear is also a great choice, and it will go perfectly with your carefree vibe. A flower in your hair or a colorful hair tie could also be a fashionable finishing touch for your outfit.
A bridal shower is a wonderful occasion, so make sure that your cute cocktail dress is up to par by adding a few dazzling accessories to create an unforgettable ensemble.
Bows for show
21 November 2011
If you love feeling feminine, then we've got the trend for you! This season, big, frilly bows are all the rage - and there's no better way to feel girly and youthful than by adding this adorable detail to your next formal dress.
There are lots of ways to wear bows, but one of our favorites is a giant one right at the collar. Adding a big bow to an otherwise demure outfit keeps it from veering into matronly territory, and you can keep things age appropriate by selecting a fun color, a short hemline and lots of fun, sparkly accessories.
If a bow at the neck is just too old-school for you, a bow at the waist is another excellent option. Adding a sash instantly cinches in your waist and highlights the skinniest part of your body, giving you that much-coveted hourglass figure. Tie the bow in the front for a little extra romance, or tie in the back for a girly surprise when you're walking away.
Another way to wear bows? As accessories. Wear one in your hair as a headband for a youthful look, or opt for bow-inspired jewelry, like rings and bracelets.
Felicity Jones showcases some intriguing fall color combinations
18 November 2011
British actress Felicity Jones was one of the many celebrities who graced the red carpet at the New York City premiere of Like Crazy, but she was easily one of the best-dressed. The Dr. Who star wore a dazzling black, white and green formal dress that featured patterns of greenery that opened up her style choices significantly.
Jones' choice of evening dresses was a dazzling mix of patterns that resembled tropical leaves placed against a black backdrop. She paired it with a pair of satin black stiletto heels and showed that even an unconventional style looks best with some black pumps.
What really stood out about Jones' ensemble was her accessory choices. While red and green are typically Christmas colors, Jones combined ruby earrings, a bright red lip color and a gilded cocktail ring with her dress. The deeper shades of red worked beautifully to add contrast to her bright green formal gown.
If you have a formal event on the horizon, versatile shades like green and dark blue could become extremely popular hues for this season. They can always be paired easily with neutral accessories and footwear, so take a chance on something you really love.
Pippa Middleton shows how to toughen up a casual cocktail dress
18 November 2011
Pippa Middleton seems to be every bit as glamorous as her royal sister, so it's no surprise that fashion blogs and magazines seem to be following her every move. Instyle.com recently named Pippa's ensemble the Look of the Day, and all she was doing was taking a casual stroll around London!
The younger Middleton wore a nautical-styled short dress that she matched with some blue single-strap shoes and a silver handbag. What really set her outfit apart was that she combined her cute cocktail dress with a black cutoff leather jacket that seemed like a picture-perfect match for her look.
Leather jackets and accessories are the easiest way to toughen up the look of a formal dress or your hottest club dresses. While black leather is always a great start, take a look for some red leather or brown leather outerwear that can really open up your design choices.
Accessories are another easy way to coordinate colors with many party dresses. If you have silver or gold buttons on your leather jacket, match it up with some similar jewelry choices. When trendy gems are paired with your summer dresses, you will have a fashion-forward look to die for.
A white dress can be adapted to any season
17 November 2011
Freida Pinto, the star of Slumdog Millionaire and a burgeoning actress on the entertainment scene, was spotted at a recent social event sporting a white halter dress that she brought to life with her footwear and accessory choices. While the dress itself was unremarkable, it provided a fitting backdrop for other pieces to create a fashion-forward look.
Pinto's dress was a standard halter cut that was form-fitting throughout the bodice and gave way to a looser skirt. The crisp white formal dress was a chic choice and provided a fitting backdrop for her other style choices.
Pinto's statement necklace was a combination of violet and teal cloth over a gilded band, and she paired that with matching open-toed heels and a few gold cocktail rings. Gold is always a fabulous choice to pair with white evening dresses and it has a unique ability to add a warming glow to an ensemble.
There are few outfits that are as refreshing as a white cocktail dress, so no matter what formal occasion you're attending this fall, this outfit could be a stunning choice that will bring out the best in your accessory choices.
Anne Hathaway showcases a dazzling sky blue formal dress on the red carpet
16 November 2011
The 15th Annual Hollywood Film Festival is one of the most popular events on the Los Angeles social calendar, and the attendees are always dressed in their finest garb. Anne Hathaway was one of the many celebs who graced the red carpet, and she reinvented her look for the occasion by sporting a dazzling floral printed formal dress that combined an enchanting mix of varying shades of blue and metallic hues.
Hathaway's formal dress was a dazzle mix of floral patterns and inventive colors that made it one of the highlights of the evening. The strapless number also featured a tulip hem and a peek-a-boo lace panel around the back.
To pull her look together, Hathaway used plenty of eyeliner and mascara that made her lids a bit more dramatic and matched this with her black peep-toe pumps, which seem to be the most popular footwear style this season.
When you're shopping for evening dresses this fall, a patterned outfit could be a fitting choice. It will open up your style options drastically and give you greater flexibility with your accessories and cosmetics.

Taylor Swift shines on the CMA red carpet
15 November 2011
The Country Music Awards is always one of the most engaging celebrations of the year, and it's also a time where country music stars come dressed in their best. Taylor Swift always seems to make waves when she hits the spotlight, and her formal gown was a scintillating choice for the occasion. It may just inform a few ladies' holiday ensemble choices in the near future.
Swift wore a fabulous strapless formal gown that was a brilliant white color that looked as if it was wrapped around her. The formal dress was form-fitting through the bodice but gave way to an elongated tail that consisted of sheer and sparkling fabrics.
In regards to her accessory choices, Swift kept it simple by wearing a pair of gold tear drop earrings, a diamond bracelet and a soft pink lip color. This is a great choice for ladies wearing special occasion dresses this fall, as you don't want your accessories to overwhelm the look of your attire.
A gown is always a fabulous choice for a formal event, but be sure to stick to seasonal color trends and go easy on your embellishments to create a timeless look.
Too hot for TV
14 November 2011
Hot mama and Kevin Bacon's leading lady, Kyra Sedgwick, proved age is but a number in a show-stopping version of an LBD while taping an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
The star of the hit show The Closer has kept her figure intact over the years and she isn't afraid to show it, as her ruched black mini dress boasted ruffles and a large cutout showing off a bit of her mid-section.
The strapless ensemble had ruffles that gently cascaded down either side of Kyra's body and flared out a bit at her hips, which gave an exaggerated effect. The form-fitting design wasn't just meant to show off her fab figure, it was meant to bring out her sex appeal as well.
The large diamond-shaped cutout was in the center of her upper body and had a sheer lacy overlay that only further boosted the sexy design. The revealing gap showed a bit of cleavage but mostly emphasized her rock hard abs.
Paired with black pointy-toed pumps and her signature wild wavy locks, Kyra proved she is ageless with this ensemble.
Lovely in lace
12 November 2011
Fashionista and MTV personality Alexa Chung ditched her tomboy style for a much more girly white frock while hosting a concert in London.
Alexa rocked a long sleeve mini dress that boasted a lacy collar and sleeves that became sheer past her elbows.
The dress was fitted on top and then moved out into a fuller skirt past her waist. A scallop hemline further emphasized the girly nature of the design. The white against her tan skin - and super long legs - worked to make her look even more sun-kissed and toned.
Alexa gave her look a bit of a rocker edge with the addition of her accessories. She chose a thin black leather belt to further accentuate her slim frame and a pair of black booties for added height.
Her simple, effortless hair style looked a bit messy - but it worked on her!
This ensemble is a great concert outfit as you can be comfortable but stylish in this design. You may want to pair the look with simple flats or stylish sandals so you can dance and move freely.

Anne accessorized perfectly by dressing the look down with a pair of stitched peep-toed heels, a white box clutch with gold details and a mixture of gold, brown and white bracelets. She went for old-school glamor with sideswept waves, red lipstick and matching crimson nails. Dark eyeliner and tons of mascara defined her eyes and made her look smolder.

She paired the look with a beige pointy-toed heel, which elongated her legs. A chic updo with tons of volume at the crown gave a little extra height and looked glamorous. A smoky makeup palette brought out her dark, gorgeous eyes and a hint of pink on her cheeks gave her a fresh glow.

What really made the outfit stand out was her accessorizing prowess. She strolled around Paris in some vibrant orange high heels that really stood out against her neutral backdrop. A white belt sat around her waist to show off her profile and she wore some oversized black sunglasses to add a bold edge to her look.
When wearing short dresses, a good rule of thumb is to let your footwear be the star of your outfit. Take a cue from Anne Hathaway and combine your cute cocktail dress with a pair of vibrant heels or colorful flats
The red on red look is lighting up runways around the world
8 November 2011
Ever since the Academy Awards, the fashion world seems to be enchanted by the dramatic punch that an all-red outfit can have. According to Glamour.com, Cate Blanchett showed off her best red look by wearing a gorgeous scarlet dress that she matched with some red pumps, orange earrings and a light pink shade of lipstick.
The news source believes that the all-red look is a great way to get some attention, but it will get you noticed in a good way. If you're the kind of person that loves the ease of sporting a monochromatic outfit, this hue is the perfect way to be playful with your accessory and footwear choices.
A good rule of thumb when wearing a red ensemble is to color block your look with varying shades of the same hue. For instance, Blanchett's orange stud earrings were a ravishing choice and allowed her to wear a darker shade of crimson in her heels. Whether you're looking for party dresses or a formal cocktail dress, an all-red look will help you amp up your style factor in a hurry.
Kelly Rowland is the X Factor
7 November 2011
Kelly Rowland proves she's definitely no long a Destiny's Child as she arrived to the London Auditions of X Factor wearing one of the season's most sultry looks - a cutout dress.
Kelly showed off her rocking curves in this colorful vertical striped frock that was super tight and came down past her knees.
The black, blue, red and white stripes made the singer look long and lean and the cutouts near her waist gave fans a glimpse of her six-pack abs. The look also had a bit of an edge, thanks to two built-in patent leather belts.
Kelly accessorized with a black leather cuff, black stilettos and a bold white cocktail ring. Her hair was long and straight with blunt bangs that took this look to a whole new level. The sexy songstress chose sultry smokey eyes and a glossy lip to enhance her already gorgeous face.
This dress is a fabulous choice if you want to look like a bombshell as the vertical lines help keep your body looking long and the tight fit shows off your womanly curves. The cutout look is sassy, but make sure the dress fits you well as you don't want everything to hang out. Accessorize with simple pieces, as a dress full of color doesn't need many additions.
Rosario Dawson shows off a little black dress to die for
4 November 2011
At the premiere of the new Kevin James film Zookeeper, Rosario Dawson strolled down the red carpet in a gorgeous designer gown that reinvented the notion of how to pull off a little black dress. Dawson accentuated the look of her formal dress by adding some matching accessories and a sideswept wavy hair style.
The front of Dawson's black dress was bedazzled with black sequins and resembled the look of zebra stripes without having to resort to using white embellishments. With her hair off to one side and some pink lipstick, Dawson was ready to wow attendees on the red carpet.
To punch up her look even further, the starlet chose some violet jewelry that gave her neutral ensemble a welcome splash of color. By incorporating some dangling purple earrings and coordinating hues with a chunky violet cocktail ring, she crafted the perfect mix of sparkle and shimmering color.
When attending a social occasion in a formal cocktail dress, keep your accessories simple and easy to manage. Use subtle pops of color throughout to let your dress be the star of the outfit and let your jewelry act as accessories first.
Choosing the perfect accessories for your strapless dress
3 November 2011
Whether you're heading to a wedding or a formal event, you probably have a strapless formal dress that you've been dying to wear. However, no matter how many embellishments you have on your dress, accessories are the easiest way to take your look to fabulous heights.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell wore a black gown to the 2010 British Fashion Awards in December. What made her outfit such a success was her minimal jewelry choices and a few select pieces that allowed it to shine.
A good rule of thumb is to avoid necklaces when wearing a strapless dress. A better option is to use a pair of dangling tassel or teardrop earrings to pull your look together. Let your dress' embellishments be the star of your outfit.
Lastly, a chunky cocktail ring is a chic choice for formal and casual occasions, so throw one on to coordinate with your dress. Whether you're going to be wearing a formal dress or a casual cocktail dress, a strapless piece takes a bit of extra effort but can be a ravishing choice that will be a success at your next gathering.
Coats for any occasion
2 November 2011
Cocktail dresses and LBDs are likely your go-to statement pieces for a social occasion, but if it's cold out and you need to cover up, cute outerwear can only enhance your outfit. This season's looks are trendy and flattering, so feel free to experiment with all of them.
Try an A-line coat in a pop of color, like fuchsia or royal blue. The clean silhouette makes it perfect for trying out the colorblocking trend - just pair it with a fun colored dress with a longer hemline.
Animal printed coats can sex up a little black dress, especially if the shape is sleek. Go with a more standard cheetah print or experiment with other patterns for a look that's as wild as your personality.
A long white coat is perfect for either day or night and looks sophisticated with a tiered dress in a pastel color.
A classic trench coat is a good investment and goes with pretty much anything. Find one in a neutral shade that will work with any outfit. One with a belted waist will flatter your figure.
A neutral colored coat with a faux fur collar is perfect for making any dress feel a bit more luxurious. As an added bonus - you won't need a scarf!
A wrapped belt toughens up girly looks
2 November 2011
Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester looked edgy and sophisticated in a belted neon minidress at the debut of Vera Wang's latest fragrance.
Leighton's yellow-green minidress featured a wide V-shaped neckline and gathered fabric straps that showed plenty of decolletage. The ruffled pleats of the asymmetrical skirt started at the hips, flowing down to just above the knees. The dress could've entered shapeless territory were it not for the black leather strap wrapped around her waist as a belt, which gave her an hourglass silhouette and offered the ensemble a bit of edge.
She paired the dress with a pair of black Jimmy Choo stilettos to match the belt, along with plenty of pave bracelets and a pair of earrings. She pulled her hair back into a chic updo with curls in the rear and chose a dark brown liner and shadow to define her gorgeous eyes. A rosy blush and mauve lipstick completed the pretty look.
Next time you're in the market for homecoming dresses, steal Leighton's style by choosing a girly dress in a fun color and mixing it up with rough leather details. Jewelry adds sparkle to any outfit, so don't be afraid to go wild with dazzling bracelets and earrings.
Miranda Kerr shows an enchanting way to pull off a formal gown
1 November 2011
Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr was one of the many leading ladies that recently helped launch one of the company's new products, and she was dressed in her best for the occasion. The model wore a gorgeous magenta formal gown that featured a number of intriguing features that fashionistas can look for when they're shopping for evening dresses this fall.
Kerr's formal dress was a stunning strapless piece in magenta that was form-fitting throughout the bodice. The dress featured an alluring slit running up the side and an elongated tail that draped behind her on the red carpet.
What stood out about Kerr's ensemble, aside from the fabulous cut of her dress, was her choice of accessories. She used the warm backdrop of her outfit to sport a pair of gold strappy sandals and accented them with a matching gilded cuff bracelet.
When you're shopping for homecoming dresses or any kind of formal wear this fall, the cut of your dress can help you stand apart from the rest. Pick a dress that will highlight your best features and can mesh with your accessories beautifully.
Liven up your short dresses with a boyfriend blazer
1 November 2011
Oftentimes when you're invited to a formal occasion, you may think that trotting out a formal gown could be a little over the top. In this case, cute cocktail dresses and short dresses may be the ideal choice, but you'll need something extra to help you stand out from the crowd.
One of the hottest styles in the world of fashion is combining selective men's clothing into certain ensembles. A boyfriend blazer is a fabulous choice, and you can find one in an assortment of neutral hues or bright and bold colors to add a dramatic look to your outfit.
A blazer just seems to fit with a strapless or dress that sits just above your knee, and it will help to keep you warm during the cooler weather. Try combining the style with your favorite pair of boots or peep-toe heels, and break out your favorite statement necklace to give your outfit a dash of glamor.
Ladies are always looking for ingenious ways of helping their attire stand out, but sometimes it means dipping into your boyfriend's closet to find a dash of inspiration!
Skip the perfectly matching outerwear
31 October 2011
Sex in the City's Sarah Jessica Parker knows a lot about style, which is why taking a cue from her look at a Moscow press event for her new movie, I Don't Know How She Does It, could be a good idea for your next formal event.
Admittedly, Sarah's look was a bit Little Red Riding Hood, but you don't have to copy her look exactly. She wore a scarlet gown that featured a tight bodice and draped details over the bust, which gave the dress shape. The floor-length skirt made her look taller, but the matching cape was a little too much.
She kept her accessories relatively simple, opting for a diamond necklace and pave hoops. She parted her hair in the middle and put it half up, showcasing soft waves. She chose dramatic eye makeup to make her baby blues really stand out and used a bronzer for a nice glowing complexion. Mauve lips completed the look.
Red is a classic color for long formal gowns or cocktail dresses. To avoid looking too gimmicky, skip matching your coat to your gown, which can make the outfit look like a costume. There are plenty of other outerwear options.
Fashion it girl of the moment: Emma Watson
31 October 2011
Fashionista Emma Watson further proved her style worth while attending a photo shoot in London for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in a ruffle and lace mini dress.
Emma mixed edgy and girly in this frock that had a lot going on, but somehow worked effortlessly together. A tight skin-toned bodice was underneath a black lace design with a v-neck and sheer wide straps. Ruffles helped to exaggerate her shoulders.
Ruffles also appeared on the bottom of the dress, as they came into play slightly after Emma's waist in a tiered fashion to her mid-thigh.
A patent leather belt further pushed this almost Gothic mini and helped make her tiny waist seem even more defined.
Emma paired the look with black patent leather pumps and black drop earrings. The style maven also darkened her pixie cut to a rich chocolate shade. Her makeup was youthful and understated, which works best as this natural beauty doesn't have anything to hide. This risk taker proved once again that she knows how to pull off any look.
Chic meets street
28 October 2011
Kelly Osbourne showed up at the Huffington Post's U.K. launch party in London wearing a stylish black frock.
Kelly's LBD had short cap sleeves and was tight and body hugging the whole way down. The dress was a perfect choice for this newly slimmed down star, who must always strive for excellence or else she'll end up on her own show - Fashion Police.
The design came to just above her knees and the only detail was a small white flower near the middle of her collarbone, giving it just a touch of softness.
As the dress was basically an open canvas, Kelly chose to take the look back - to the 1950s. Paired with a bouffant up-do in platinum blond and cat eye sunglasses, she rocked the style almost effortlessly.
Her shoes boasted a bit of personality as the black pumps had loose black bows near the toes. Her tattoos and rocker attitude came through in full force.
Replicating this style takes a lot of confidence, but the great thing about it is that you can really make the look whatever you want as the simple black dress gives you numerous options when it comes to making a style all your own. You may choose to bling it out and wear an armful of bangles or add color through your shoes and accessories.
What's black, white and angular all over?
27 October 2011
There's something that's especially scintillating about a black and white mini that's made up of jaunty, angular cuts - for this, we implore you to check out the dress that Kim Kardashian wore in New York City during her guest appearance on "Project Runway."
Kim looked fabulous in the skintight mini, which was all black save for a couple of white triangular pocket details on her hips. This was mirrored by the sharp-shouldered silhouette of the dress, which Kim accentuated by a slicked-back 'do, sky-high black pumps, big gold hoop earrings and a big stack of bangles on her wrist.
All in all, if you've got a rather angular-looking dress lined up for one of your summer events, it's probably best you took a page out of Kim's book and matched your frock with streamlined hair, makeup and jewelry. The color-blocking theme is a good way to ease into this trend, as it features sharp separate sections of contrasting hues.
Penelope lights up Madrid
26 October 2011
What better celebrity to launch Madrid's own walk of stars than its native daughter Penelope Cruz? Penelope attended the event and even got her own star. She looked red hot in a burnt orange one shoulder design that had a modest slit and a touch of ruching on the skirt. Penelope looked glamorous as she showed off her fabulous post-baby body in this form-fitting design.
Paired with tan platform pumps and a quaint pair of earrings, Penelope proved she can throw on anything and still look good. She played up a bit of sex appeal with her long flowing hair and minimal makeup. All she really needed to complete her look was her megawatt smile.
Recreating the look would require you to find a tight dress with a one shoulder top. If you're having trouble finding a similar design with one shoulder, you can adjust to either a strapless design or one with two straps. The real key to nailing this ensemble is to find a dress that is tight against your body as it's meant to show off your rockin' summer curves. Don't be afraid of color - instead, embrace it as a way to stand out and feel great.
Heidi Klum makes one-shouldered dresses look good
25 October 2011
It's hardly going out on a limb to suggest that Heidi Klum could make a burlap sack look good, but she definitely brought our attention back to the one-shouldered dress given her appearance while filming the next season of "Project Runway" in New York.
Klum was impossibly tall in an all-black ensemble (which included a pair of towering stilettos). Her skintight black mini featured a dashing diagonal neckline as well as a thick belt to accentuate her waist, which she paired with matching black tights to make those long legs look positively infinite. A pair of black button earrings, a bright fuchsia pout and a slicked-back hairdo with a little pompadour helped take her clean, classic look to the heights of summertime glamour.
If you're in the market for a fun, flirty dress to wear to any summer event, be it casual or formal, we highly advise you to look through your one-shouldered options. A tight black mini like Heidi's is both unconventional and entirely flattering on any figure.
All that glitters is silver
24 October 2011
Heidi Klum embraced sparkles and shimmer as she displayed her new Hamptons magazine cover. The mega mogul looked hip and fun in her one shoulder cocktail dress that was covered in shades of blues, silvers and purple sequins.
Heidi looked radiant from head to toe and it showed in her dress and her accessories. She paired her bright look with an armful of stacked bangles and glittered stilettos in a similar tone to her dress. She further accessorized with large drop earrings to cap off the bedazzled design.
This fierce fashionista knew enough to keep her hair pulled back into a tight bun as the dress deserved all the attention. Her smokey eyes and summer glow further proved her radiant beauty.
Recreating this dress would be a great way to make an entrance as the sparkle is bold, yet still fashionable. The one shoulder design looks great on all body types and the tight fit will help to show off your killer curves - just like Heidi's. Pair a dress like this with a pair of black heels, as it may be hard to find one that will match the color of your dress just right.
Julia Roberts, queen of the shift
24 October 2011
If there's one lady that really knows how to rock a shift in the summertime, it's Julia Roberts. The actress was street-savvy in the midst of the hot urban jungle for her appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman" in New York City this week.
Julia may have topped off her look with a sophisticated black blazer, but what she had going on underneath was what really caught our attention. She wore a short cream-colored shift that hung straight from her shoulders and ended with an intriguing frilly hem that gave the dress a bit of texture and as well as the extra oomph needed to make it formalwear-appropriate. Together with her jacket, pointy heels and rocker-chic aviator sunglasses, Julia looked ready to take on anything in her path.
It's fair to say that the shift has been making a major comeback this season, so if you're in the market for a formal dress, don't be fooled by this casual-looking silhouette. The relatively simple construction of a shift is precisely what makes it an elegant choice for any warm-weather event.
Take your skirt suits to cocktail hour
23 October 2011
While skirt suits that are office-appropriate are certainly sexy in their own professional manner, there's a way to borrow this influence and take it right to happy hour (well, a cocktail fete would be more like it). A moderated tuxedo-inspired skirt and vest combo is the perfect happy medium between menswear-inspired pant suits and sexy halter dresses for the summertime.
If you're wondering exactly how this plays out in the real world, check out the ensemble that Cat Deeley wore to InStyle's Dinner with a Designer. Deeley was sophisticated and appropriately sexy in a cream vest and skirt combo with pockets and lapels borrowed straight from the world of men's tuxedos. The deep-V neckline and short skirt both allowed her to flaunt a bit of skin without going overboard. Paired with tan strappy sandals and a matching clutch, Deeley was very much "in style," if you know what we mean.
Ladies of all ages can adopt this look to suit their summer agendas, regardless of whether you're aching to show a bit of skin like Deeley or opt for a slightly more conservative version of this style. A sharp skirt suit designed for after-hours soirees will surely get you noticed at your next formal event.
Ashley Green shows her sophisticated side
22 October 2011
Twilight hottie Ashley Greene showed off her sexy style in an all white design with exaggerated shoulders, a slight v-neck and ladylike accessories.
Ashley looked sophisticated and very mature in this dress that could have been just as easily worn by a tough and no-nonsense woman of power. The hard edges of the shoulders made it look business-like, yet the white color and her chosen accessories helped to bring femininity to the dress.
The thin metallic belt helped cinch her at the waist, showing off her shapely figure. Paired with a black and white houndstooth clutch and bright red patent leather pumps, the actress kept the look fresh with the use of only primary colors.
Ashley took the look even further with her pin-up girl curls and simple earrings. She worked to keep the look feeling young and hip with her makeup, as the natural beauty emphasized her looks with bronze sun-kissed cheeks, nude gloss and peachy-toned eyeshadow, which played up her big brown eyes and gave off a bit of a summer feel to this otherwise edgy ensemble.
Do mix patterns and sequins
21 October 2011
Contrasting the long list of fashion "don'ts," we entreat that you do mix patterns and sequins, as this is one surefire way to take a simple silhouette to star-spangled heights.
Don't believe us? Just check out the show-stopping dress that Cameron Diaz wore to the Moscow premiere of her movie, Bad Teacher. In this case, she was one of the best teachers we've ever seen, at least where style is concerned. Diaz rocked a glittering sequined tiger-print tunic with a boat-necked collar and loose, cropped sleeves, which she paired with basic black pumps for an overall dazzling effect.
Ladies searching for just the right balance of glamour and edgy fashion know-how this summer would do well to follow in Cameron's example. The glimmer afforded by sequins is the perfect way to take a two-dimensional pattern and make it pop, staying well in line with the current metallics obsession. A short, long-sleeved silhouette is the perfect way to balance summer style with formal elegance this season.
White and black and a little added twist
20 October 2011
What's white, black and sexy all over? The answer: Katie Holmes at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy awards in Beverly Hills.
Katie gave a rather scintillating twist to a classic black and white formal dress look thanks to the slightly asymmetrical shape that separated the dress' textured white bustier from the black sheath skirt, which was accented with a demure little black bow at her waist. Paired with nude pointy bow-adorned pumps and not much else, Katie's ensemble was the picture of class and modern sensibilities.
If you're looking to get glammed up this summer, consider finding a classic black and white number that features a slight unexpected twist like Katie's. This can take the form of an asymmetrical hem or detail as well as a side cut-out or added applique. Keep hair, makeup and accessories basic for a look that strives to charm and surprise - not overdo.
Keep accessories to a minimum when rocking a statement piece
19 October 2011
Brooklyn Decker has been making the most of showing off her legs in recent outfits. The model turned actress did it again - this time at a party honoring her friend. The metallic tunic mini resembled a coat of armor and Brooklyn added a few feminine touches to give this otherwise tough look a little bit of softness.
Brooklyn wore a slim brown leather belt around her waist to give shape to her mini. The choice was daring - the belt's texture was a far cry from the dress' metallic fabric - but even if you keep things a little bit simpler, a belt is always a good way to make your midsection seem teensy-tiny. Consider adding a black patent leather belt to your favorite dress to keep it interesting.
The dress itself is a fun alternative to wearing a super tight gown, so keep it in mind for a first date, or a night on the town with the girls - just with different accessories.
Casual meets glamorous for afternoon engagements
19 October 2011
Toeing the line between casual and glamorous can be tough. An event like an afternoon summer wedding in the park or an engagement party at the local resort demands a certain amount of gravitas, but it wouldn't be right to show up in a floor-length black gown. Still, you don't want to look like you've just sprinted to the event straight from the office - or worse, the gym. If you're wondering how to combine effortless fashion with a touch of the high-brow, let us be your guide.
First, it's all about the color. Deep, rich hues are rarely appropriate for afternoon events, and they can make even a casual dress feel much heavier. Instead, look for blush and neutral tones or bright, sunny colors like green, yellow and blue.
A daytime event is also the perfect time to rock a pattern. Polka dots, floral designs or stripes might be a little too casual for an evening affair, but they're just right for a daytime or twilight get-together. Don't shy away from a classic sundress!
Finally, length matters. Instead of a floor-length hem, rock a minidress - it's the perfect way to beat the summer heat while still looking fabulous. Really want the drama of a long train? Try a hi-lo style that combines a long back with a short front.
Jazz it up in an asymmetrical hem
18 October 2011
At prom, you can expect to expect the unexpected. But in a daring, asymmetrical style such as the one Fergie sported while promoting Fergie Footwear at Macy's in New York City, you can be sure that no one would have seen this one coming.
Fergie looked all kinds of "icious" in a black long-sleeved mini with a sexy asymmetrical hem. The slant of her skirt wasn't anything too dramatic, but given the basic simplicity of the rest of her garb, this detail was the perfect blend of eye-catching and subtle.
This prom, expect to turn some heads in any number of asymmetrical silhouettes. Even if you don't see yourself rocking a diagonal hem, an off-the-shoulder look is all the rage, as are asymmetrical cut-outs and off-center embellishments.
Whatever slant you choose to follow, know that you don't have to stop at just your dress. Tiaras look extra cute when tipped to the side, and you can dress up your tresses with other asymmetrical adornments.
Tracking the evolution of the classic A-line
18 October 2011
Like rock and roll, A-line dresses are here to stay, and they certainly haven't shown any signs of letting up since their explosion onto the scene in the 1950s. But like rock and roll music, the A-line skirt has changed and evolved in its own right, resulting in several little tangents that we thought well worth mentioning.
In this case, we spotlight what we could call a tulip hem, for lack of better words. We entreat Reese Witherspoon as our lovely visual aide, who wore a white mid-length dress of this variety to the Water for Elephants premiere in New York City. The beaded Jason Wu mini fanned out from her hips in the style of an A-line, but was folded under in bunches and layers to create what effectively looks like the shape of an upside-down tulip - you know what we mean.
The end result was a look that was as clean and flirty as any of our vintage icons, but pulled together with a modern twist - we bet that bunchy silhouette would be so much fun to wear to prom!
Bridesmaids dresses not so cookie-cutter anymore
17 October 2011
If you're been tapped to feature in a wedding party, chances are you can breathe a bit easier. It appears that bridesmaids dresses tend to be a bit more relaxed these days, with styles that work to make each lady look her best while inflicting minimal damage on her wallet.
"These days, there's really no excuse for ugly bridesmaid dresses," NWsource.com reports. "The genre has grown up, offering non-embarrassing, straight-from-the-runway trends and increasingly affordable price tags. Some more evolved brides even break from the cookie-cutter mold and allow different dress styles in the same color, or varying hues of the same color theme."
Those adventurous brides who opt for one of the latter choices will not only have one more decision off their plates, but all their bridesmaids will thank them when they arrive in the purple or marigold dress of their own choosing.
Brides may also wish to explore vintage and alternative dress styles to put a new face on the often detail-deficient bridesmaids dresses of the past. This is no longer your grandmother's shindig.
Dreamy diagonals
14 October 2011
Who says stripes can only be vertical or horizontal? Emma Roberts found a brand new way to show off this fashion staple - with a complicated yet elegant gown that featured vibrant stripes in four quadrants, forming a sort of rhombus across her body. This geometric look was a fun and refreshing way to liven up the ol' stripe.
The starlet paired a richly textured blue gown with a pair of black pumps for a timeless and age-appropriate look at the premiere of Scream 4 in Los Angeles. This gorgeous look was anything but horrifying - the dress' halter top was a flirty detail that hinted at the coming of summer, but the cobalt hue was all spring. Paired with a silver cuff and a pair of subtle earrings, this simple look was just flawless.
If you're on the hunt for the perfect prom look, don't shy away from stripes - just look for a new way to wear them. Geometry-inspired dresses are all the rage this season, so don't shy away from complex shapes and unique designs that highlight shapes and textures.
Heavy metal
13 October 2011
You don't have to be a big fan of Poison to enjoy rocking a little heavy metal now and again - on your clothes, we mean! Plenty of ladies embrace the glimmer of metallics when it comes to their jewelry, but have you ever thought about wearing it as part of your dress? For prom this year, try out a metallic look - you're sure to catch the eye of every guy in the room.
Of course, you don't want to look like you've wrapped yourself in tinfoil - that look is reserved for conspiracy nuts worried about the CIA tapping into their brainwaves. Instead, you're looking for just a subtle flash of silver or gold shimmer to give your outfit just the right amount of glitter. Need a little help? Take a look at what Jennifer Garner wore to her appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Garner sported a sleek sheath dress with silver detailing over a black background. Paired with a pair of black pumps and some simple silver jewels, she looked like she'd just been platinum-plated in this gorgeous gown!
You don't have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks. With a metallic look, you'll be the star of the show.
Dressing up an LBD: Creating the versatile look
13 October 2011
By now, it's sort of a given that every gal own at least one LBD (read: little black dress) in her wardrobe. And while these sleek numbers are mainly meant to be worn out for that extra special night on the town, it's important to note how versatile a black dress can be, and that the secret to its many uses lies in how you dress up and accessorize your frock.
Take Rose Byrne, for example. The actress wore a chic, simple black minidress to the Cinema Society & Montblanc screening of Cracks in New York City, but given the way she dressed it up, she could have easily pulled this look off on literally any occasion, ranging from the office to the wine bar.
Byrne paired her dress with a bright red blazer and matching hairline belt, completing her ensemble with sheer black polka-dotted tights and pointy black shoes.
Belted dresses are a surefire hit in any locale, and the versatility of a matching blazer or sweater means you can look appropriate when you need to and sexy when you don't with a mere shrug of your shoulders.
Taking babydoll to an entirely new level
12 October 2011
If you thought babydoll frocks only had a place in the bedroom, think again. Victoria's Secret enthusiasts have a whole new paradigm to look forward to this prom, thanks to J.Lo's example of how dressed up this dressed-down look can be.
Miss Lopez wore a white flouncy mini for her appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, but it's safe to say that her look wasn't just for after-hours programming. People's Most Beautiful Person of the Year looked the part thanks to the dreamy floaty fabric, the elegant beaded bust and the exquisite detailing near the straps, which featured carefree ruffles to go with her getup. She finished off the look with a pair of gray pearly pumps and a few small touches of bling.
For future prom queens everywhere, this look isn't too much of a departure from the classic A-line minidress. The difference lies in the empire waist and the characteristically loose skirt that falls just below the bust - perfect for girls who want to hide any problem areas around their middles!
Blake Lively dazzles in Chanel
12 October 2011
Blake Lively channeled everything that's puffy and bright in a gorgeous Chanel number at a dinner party honoring the house's designer, Karl Lagerfeld.
And boy, it's really undeniable that the Gossip Girl actress knows how to pull off just about any outfit. The dress - which might have been overwhelming on anybody less confident - featured a high hemline, which let Blake show off her impressive legs. The low neckline showed off plenty of decolletage, but Blake kept things modest with big, ruffled sleeves that ended just above her elbows. Plus, with a cinched ribbon at the waist, she left no doubt about her fit figure!
Blake's look is a great example of how some serious self-confidence can help you make any look your own. If you're considering something bold and unique for your next formal event, don't shy away from it - embrace it wholeheartedly! Blake kept her jewelry simple and let the dress do the talking, which is always a good idea if you're going with something truly one-of-a-kind. But don't let the dress drown you out - you'll need a charming personality to match such a winning ensemble.
A colorful wedding gown? Why not!
11 October 2011
Traditionally, brides in the Western nations have worn white on their wedding days to celebrate their purity. Of course, plenty of other cultures have seen fit to adorn their brides in everything from electric pink to lime green, symbolizing happiness, growth, rebirth, spirituality and all kinds of other joyous traits. If white's not really your color, there's no reason to follow tradition unless you want to.
If you're not interested in traditional white but don't quite feel comfortable going with a bold color, consider the off-white family. Creams, ivories, beiges, grays and champagnes are all beautiful neutral colors that aren't too far from white, but offer you a chance to differentiate yourself from the crowd. Plenty of brides throughout the ages have picked off-white gowns to complement their skin tones and make their special days a little more unique.
Feeling even bolder? Don't be afraid to go all the way and leave white behind. Wedding dresses are available in every color from red to blue to yellow and everything in between. Or, you can simply accessorize a white dress with a pink sash, a bright orange bow or a crimson trim. (In fact, doing so is traditional in some cultures!)
Golden girls
11 October 2011
Gold is always in fashion. From the bangles that Egyptian women wore by the banks of the Nile to the extravagant gold jewelry that still features heavily on the Oscars red carpet every year (not the mention the gold award itself!), this precious metal is one we've always cherished. But you don't have to drop a lot of cash on a bracelet or a necklace to look great in gold. If you're looking for a unique look, turn toward metallic dresses for an all-over shine.
Many celebs have made gold their own over the years. Keira Knightley wore a daring gold dress inspired by the fashion of the Ancient Romans to the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in London, and Jessica Alba landed on numerous best-dressed lists after sporting a gold dress with white floral appliques at the 78th Annual Academy Awards. And the trend's not going anywhere - this year, Gwyneth Paltrow sported a gold frock at the Oscars.
Gold looks great on every complexion, so ladies of all skin, hair and eye colors can pull off this look. Whether you're a freckled redhead or a dark-skinned beauty, a gold dress will make you look like a million bucks. If you're looking for a classic color that looks great in a variety of cuts and fabrics, you can't go wrong with gold this season.
Shift into neutral
10 October 2011
These days, many of us feel like we're always on the go. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, consider throwing things into neutral at your next formal event by choosing a muted color for your dress.
Neutrals have been all over the red carpet this season, from Dianna Agron's goddess-inspired ivory Golden Globes getup to Halle Berry's gorgeous beige Oscar dress.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, neutral colors aren't just beiges and browns. Certain shades of olive green, soft pink and dusty purple can also be counted as neutrals, as long as they mimic the colors you already find all over your body - in your eyes, hair, skin tone and more. Choosing neutral colors is all about letting the tones of your natural self shine, but don't be afraid to think outside the box. A blonde-haired beauty can add contrast with a deep brown dress, while a dark-skinned woman can pull off a cream-toned gown just as well as anyone.
When you go with neutrals, you have a choice to make. Do you want to go subtle all over with flesh-colored pumps and silver or diamond jewelry? If so, we applaud your commitment to the trend. But, if you're looking for a pop of color, there's no reason you can't jazz up a neutral ensemble with a ruby cocktail ring, a pair of electric blue stilettos or even a bright pink headband.
Stars and stripes, stripes, stripes
10 October 2011
If you pay any attention at all to fashion, you've no doubt heard the old adage that horizontal stripes are anything but flattering. Indeed, wide swaths of color or busy striped patterns can have the undesired side effect of appearing to add to your size, but with the right cut and a bright smile, you don't have to be confined by the stuffy rules of traditional fashion!
If you're interested in trying a bold new trend for spring, buck the conventional wisdom and go for a striped dress at your next social occasion. Zebras have made stripes work for them - why not you? And it doesn't just have to be black and white. A subtle color combination like navy and pastel blue is one way to go, or you can go the whole nine yards with a pink, yellow and green number! There's no shortage of ways to express yourself with stripes.
If you're a bit hesitant about horizontal stripes, you can try on some of their cousins - plaid, gingham and tartan are always in style! Paired with shimmering accessories, a solid pair of pumps and a lot of confidence, you're sure to turn heads.
Sheer genius
10 October 2011
One of the secrets of looking both sexy and elegant at a formal event is knowing just how much skin to show off. Bear too much and you leave nothing to the imagination, but cover it all up and you can look stiff, matronly and unapproachable. Experts advise that you follow the 40 percent rule - never show off more than 40 percent of your skin. So that means if you're wearing a short hem, cover up on top; if you're going bare-shouldered, pick a longer cut.
However, if you're looking to find a new way to be both daring and modest at once, you might be interested in investing in a dress that involves sheer details.
Gowns with sheer elements have been a red carpet mainstay for years, and 2011 is no exception. If you're interested in rocking this sexy trend, let Mila Kunis be your style inspiration. The brunette beauty sported a draped lavender gown that featured sheer detailing along the train, allowing just a glimpse of her tanned legs as she walked from reporter to reporter. Scarlett Johansson also rocked the peek-a-boo style in a magenta lace gown that let just a hint of skin shine through.
So ladies, for your next formal event, consider showing a little skin somewhere unexpected with a slightly sheer gown.
Polka dotted dresses can be casual or formal
07 October 2011
Just in case recent runway fashion hasn't convinced you that polka dot patterns are sexy, Jessica Chastain stepped out recently wearing a cute ensemble with the perfect hint of retro glamor.
The black and white polka dotted cocktail dress amped up the sex appeal with a formfitting silhouette, low cut neckline and knee-length hem. The dots were medium sized, which made the look stand out with a sense of class and sophistication.

A pair of chic sunglasses added to the glamor. She kept her gorgeous red locks down and parted in the middle for an easy style, pairing the simple look with minimal makeup for a effortless kind of beauty.
Next time you're looking for something cute to wear, don't be afraid to try polka dot cocktail dresses. You can wear one for any occasion as long as you set the mood with your accessories. A sweater creates a casual look, while classy jewelry or bright pumps will dress it right up.
Glam up your ponytail for any formal occasion
07 October 2011
You don't have to settle on an old-fashioned hairdo when you're wearing formal dresses or cocktail dresses for a fancy occasion. Believe it or not, your go-to ponytail can be transformed into a cute yet glamorous style that will be sure to set you apart from the updo crowd.
If you're a fan of the high pony, have no fear, because they're not just for cheerleaders or working out at the gym. As long as you give it a little bit of elegance, it can work for a formal occasion. Just use a curling iron first to create some waves to give your hair bounce and a bit of volume. Part your hair on the side, then leave out a section in front to create faux sideswept bangs. Pull the rest of your hair into a sleek high ponytail and wrap a section of hair around the elastic. Pin the hair in front underneath the pony.
Low ponytails work too if you position them a little off-center with some face framing tendrils. Just part your hair on the side and pull your hair a bit to one side near the nape of your neck. Wrap a piece of the tail around the elastic, then use a curler to give the pony a bit of volume. It's girl-next-door chic that will look great with any dress.
Jessica Chastain showcases a beautiful ice blue strapless dress
06 October 2011
Jessica Chastain was one of the many leading ladies who graced the red carpet for the premiere of the new film, The Debt, in New York City. The actress wore a delightful strapless dress in an enchanting ice blue, but probably could have used a few more accessories to make her look a winner.
Chastain's formal dress was an absolute knock-out. Her ensemble was a whimsical mixture of textures and form-fitting materials in a unique shade of blue which is rarely a color seen on the red carpet.
Chastain's look could have used a bit of a boost in the accessories department. She wore a pair of nude heels and sported a smoky eye look, but her outfit was in dire need of sparkle. A statement necklace or even a pair of teardrop earrings could have helped her exponentially.
When you're out shopping for homecoming dresses this fall, take a cue from Jessica Chastain and go for an opulent strapless look. But, you can go even further by incorporating chic autumn jewelry and infusing your own personal style into the ensemble.
Simple shapes get amped with colorblocking
06 October 2011
Julianne's simply-shaped dress stood out thanks to blocks of black, cream and coral fabric. A patch of black adorned the right shoulder, while cream fabric sat on the left, snaking around to create a line just above her bust, separating the two blocks from the coral on the bottom. The short dress hit mid-thigh and let a bit of the cream fabric peek out at the hem, pulling the garment together.
She accessorized with a fierce pair of snakeskin platform sandals with black piping, a gold cocktail ring and stud earrings. She pulled her hair back into a messy, summer updo and kept her face fresh with a touch of rosy blush and highlighter on her cheeks. Shimmery copper shadow defined her eyes, adding a bit of elegance.
Simple dresses take on a whole new meaning with bold blocks of color. When you're out looking for homecoming dresses this fall, find a flattering shape with uniquely colored details for a look that's trendy and fuss-free.
