Spikes are nice embellishments for formal dresses
30 September 2010

Some girls love to dress like sinners, others as saints. Of course, it goes without saying that most gals want to embody a bit of both.

Good news - it's possible to look elegant and edgy in the very same ensemble. In fact, StyleList.com recently provided an especially-nice pointer on how to add drama to a formal dress in an instant - spikes.

"Start out easy by adorning a jacket or a shirt. You could also take a cue from punk rockers and add studs to a leather bag or belt," the news source reports.

Ladies can also choose to sport a gorgeous gown that already has this creation embedded within it. Search for pieces that feature spiky adornments on the shoulders or even prickly pieces sewn onto the bodice or skirt.

However, women who don't want to look like an unofficial member of Hells Angels members have other glittery options at their disposal.

"Feel free to swap metal for rhinestones," the news outlet advises.

Back-baring dresses are gaining popularity
29 September 2010

It seems that there is a new look flooding the runways at Milan Fashion Week. According to Style.com, designers have been debuting a plethora of ensembles that boast backs with bold cutouts.

While this trend is poised to be hot in Spring 2011, that doesn't have to stop you from trying out this unexpectedly sexy silhouette now - in fact, one of Hollywood's most stylish starlets recently embraced this look.

At The Late Show with David Letterman, Gossip Girl Blake Lively looked stunning in a beautiful sequined semi-formal dress that featured a thigh-grazing hemline and long sleeves. But of course, that wasn't all. When Lively turned her back to the cameras, she revealed that the LBD boasted a back-baring cut that showed the perfect amount of skin.

The secret to rocking such a silhouette may be balance. When wearing a back-baring semi-formal dress, remember to tone down the sex-appeal but choose a number that also features a high neckline, longer sleeves or a more modest skirt length.

Ladies looking for an outfit with a back cutout for a specific event should start shopping early, as shipping and processing times can vary. A head start can help ensure that the dress arrives with plenty of time to spare before the big night out.

How to wear a pair of statement shoes
29 September 2010

It's no secret that many women are obsessed with shoes - from sky-high stilettos to flat-soled boots, some ladies just can't get enough. If you happen to be one of the millions with a fancy footwear fetish, why not make the shoes the focus of your next ensemble.

Basing an outfit around a particular pair of heels isn't too tricky, but there are some guidelines that ladies may want to adhere to. And, at the Tokyo premiere of Knight and Day, Cameron Diaz seemed to follow these suggestions to a tee.

The blonde bombshell walked the red carpet in a pair of eye-catching pink and black high-heeled sandals. Diaz paired the statement pumps with a minimalist black semi-formal dress, which didn't compete with her elaborate footwear.

To draw attention to the shoes, the former Charlie's Angel selected the perfect length hem. The skirt stopped high enough above her calves to keep from interfering with the heels, yet was long enough to keep her legs covered, preventing her famous stems from stealing the spotlight.

Women who are stoked to debut a new pair of pumps should remember to follow Diaz's lead and wear a semi-formal dress that complements the shoes, not one that distracts from them.

Finding the right jewelry to pair with your wedding dress
29 September 2010

When searching for the perfect wedding dress, many brides-to-be know that they've found their ideal gown the moment that they first slip it on. But, when shopping for jewelry to wear as they walk down the aisle, ladies may not experience the same instantaneous reaction.

While accessorizing may seem overwhelming, a bit of insider insight may help steer ladies looking for bridal jewelry in the right direction.

"Pearls have long been the jewelry of choice for brides," industry expert Jill Maier told TulsaWorld.com. "White crystal, alone or with pearls, adds sparkle that makes a bride look even more luminous."

Additionally, gals preparing to exchange vows may want to use their wedding dress as a guide for selecting the perfect pieces.

The news source reports that strapless cuts and silhouettes that leave shoulders bare are the perfect canvas for a bold necklace, such as multi-strand pearls, or gorgeous drop earrings.

However, women should be wary of over-accessorizing - sometimes, one item is all that is needed.

"Some brides choose to make a statement with dramatic chandelier earrings alone," Maier added.

Freida Pinto takes a risk in a crimson-colored formal dress
29 September 2010

One hue that has been a staple on the runways is a classic that often pops up as the leaves start turning - red. And while there are a plethora of shades that are sure to be hot this fall, a crimson-colored formal gown can be both eye-catching and elegant. Case in point - Slumdog Millionaire's Freida Pinto.

At the Toronto premiere of her new film Miral, Pinto stole the spotlight in a stunning red formal dress that featured a simple silhouette. However, it seems that Woody Allen, who recently worked with Pinto, may deserve some credit for the striking ensemble.

"I never wore the color red because I didn't think it flattered me," Pinto told InStyle.com. "But Woody had my character wear red in the movie You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and I realized I had been wrong."

While not everybody may have the benefit of snagging fashion advice from a prolific Hollywood director, women should remember to take risks when selecting a formal dress. Whether opting for a color you've never worn or a new silhouette, rocking a gown that challenges your personal style conventions is a great way to find new looks that look wonderful on you.

Camilla Belle rocks a sexy-yet-sophisticated semi-formal dress
29 September 2010

Women are often looking for new ways to create dynamic looks that boast a touch of sex appeal without going over-the-top. And sometimes, the mere suggestion of skin is enough to take any look from lukewarm to hot-hot-hot!

At the InStyle and Hollywood Foreign Press Association party for the Toronto Film Festival, actress Camilla Belle wowed the crowd in a semi-formal dress that was sexy and yet kept her completely covered.

While it appeared that Belle was showing off quite a bit in the abstract lace number, the piece actually featured a nude underpinning. The fantastic gown beautifully walked the line between sexy and sophisticated.

And while she looked as though she just walked off the catwalk, it appears that the secret to the classic beauty's dynamite style may be ignoring the runways.

"I just dress for myself and try not to follow too many trends," she told InStyle magazine at the event.

Women looking for a subtly sexy semi-formal dress should remember that you don't have to show a lot of skin to smolder, as long as you carefully consider cut and fabric.

Audrina Patridge's makeup artist shares cosmetic tips for a bold formal dress
29 September 2010

At MTV's 2010 Video Music Awards, some of Hollywood's hottest starlets really turn up the heat on the red carpet and wear daring, fashion-forward numbers that embrace the world of rock and roll, and the Hills-alum Audrina Patridge was no exception.

The brunette beauty, who is currently waltzing away on Dancing with the Stars, dazzled at the awards show in a sexy formal dress that was covered in silver sequins and accented with layers of diamond-like belts. However, when wearing such a bold piece, selecting the right makeup to pair with it may seem difficult.

"Audrina's dress was outrageous! And the diamond jewels she paired with it? To die for!" Joanna Schlip, Patridge's makeup artist, told the news source. "I went in the complete opposite direction with her makeup to keep everything fresh and contemporary."

Instead of slicking on a bright red lip or creating silvery smoky eyes, Schlip used a mix of bronzes and neutrals to create a defined-yet-subtle look that didn't compete with or overwhelm the bold formal dress.

Styling tips from New York Fashion Week
29 September 2010

While New York Fashion Week revealed some of the hottest trends for spring 2011, women shouldn't feel the need to wait until April to draw inspiration from the runways. In fact, according to InStyle magazine, some of the most popular Fashion Week styling tips are perfect for fall ensembles.

"Throw a leather vest over a pretty dress for an instant cool factor, minus the bulk," the news source recommends. The juxtaposition of a tough piece with a flirty semi-formal dress will turn heads for sure.

However, as the temperatures cool down, you may want to opt for a jacket instead of a vest. The news provider suggests wearing a camel-colored jacket instead of black - you'll create a look that's edgy, yet not severe.

Finally, instead of layering on animal-print accessories, turn up the wow factor with a leopard print semi-formal. However, if you opt for a printed number, remember to wear accessories that complement the piece, as items that match may create an overwhelmingly wild and busy look.

Instead, pair the dress with a bold red heel or a gorgeous purple clutch. The pop of color will play nicely against the animal print without competing with the pattern.

Pair booties with a semi-formal dress for a unique, different look
29 September 2010

Women often adore shoes for their power. The right pair of heels can turn a simple semi-formal dress into something remarkable the moment a girl slips into them.

Believe it or not, there's another type of footwear that can add a dollop of drama in a cinch - booties! Shorter than boots and taller than plain ol' heels, these babies have the ability to spruce up a girl's look in a cinch.

"Toward the end of the summer, I got a pair of slouchy booties. They are kind of rockerish, and they ended up being so comfortable and cool-looking that I wear them everything - skinny jeans, shorts and tights, even flouncy dresses," admits a writer from the news outlet.

Ladies who are looking to sport an edgy ensemble for a night on the town may want to search for booties in an unforgettable color. Typical fall hues, such as purple, brown or turquoise, will look fabulous with a simple black party dress.

A very pregnant Vera Farmiga rocks a beautiful white formal dress
30 September 2010

Pregnant brides take note! Those who scoff at the notion of rocking a gorgeous wedding dress on their big day should turn their attention to Vera Farmiga. The actress, who has quite the burgeoning belly at the moment, recently stepped out at the Metropolitan Opera looking just gorgeous in an elegant white creation.

In fact, Glamour.com was quick to point out all the fashion dos the lovely lady got right. To start, she was perfectly working her bosoms.

"I'm not always the biggest fan of cleavage, but a pregnant bride might want to explore this option since - let's be honest - your chest is probably one area of your body that's looking better than ever," an expert from the news source advised.

Also, the Up in the Air Oscar-nominee knew how to choose the correct material. Her dress was made from incredibly flowy fabric and also featured a recent wedding trend - light, sheer sleeves.

Pregnant ladies who are aisle-bound may just need to take the time to locate the dress that's perfect for their shape. Just because there's a bun in the oven does not mean a woman can't be beautiful.

Naturi Naughton chats about semi-formal dresses, fashion she wears on Mad Men set
29 September 2010

Naturi Naughton starred in a recent episode of Mad Men, and it's safe to say she was wonderful. And while the adorable actress and singer won't give too much info on her character's arc, she couldn't stop gushing about - what else? - the gorgeous duds she got to wear on set.

"I wear really fun dresses with corset tops, tight waists and flowy and puffy bottoms, and some pencil skirts. We stuck with pastel colors and floral prints. I wear some pinks and powder blues," she told the news outlet.

Women who are searching through semi-formal dresses and want to evoke a retro style at their next shindig are in luck. Believe it or not, '60s-inspired clothing is making a serious comeback at the moment.

And girls can even turn to accessories from the era in order to make a huge impression at the next event they attend. Take it from Naughton - the look is to die for.

"I wear clip-on earrings, some with large jewels. In one scene I have this beautiful pink pearl earrings and necklace set," she told the news source.

Wedding accents to look for this winter
29 September 2010

If you're currently aisle-bound, one thing is for certain - you are going to wear white on your wedding day. Still, what's a girl who loves to make a statement to do?

According to Glamour.com, winter brides have many options for wearing a traditional gown that still features a smidgen of drama. And, ladies can begin by searching for dresses that contain bits of black.

"The key to keeping black accents from looking goth is making sure they're counterbalanced by plenty of froth," the news source reports.

While this may seem difficult at first, girls should rest assured that gowns that feature dark accents are out there. Dresses with black sashes or belts remain some of the most popular options for brides-to-be.

Another hot-ticket-item at the moment? A wedding dress that features a long and luxurious train.

"This is the bridal style version of having your cake and eating it too, because you get to show off your legs and enjoy the dramatic effect of a train," according to the news outlet.

Minimalist semi-formal dresses are in
30 September 2010

With all the embellishments making their way down the runways at the moment, girls across the country may be feeling overwhelmed. While fashion fanatics crave new looks for their wardrobe, everyone needs a break!

Girls who desire a simpler look but still hope to look stylish can turn to InStyle.com's recent recommendations for the fall. As it turns out, the minimalist look is on fire.

"Creating drama in a no-glitz zone requires a succinct sense of proportion and supreme confidence in knowing how fine fabrics fall and move against the female form. So, when it works, the result is as dynamic as it is serene," according to the news outlet.

Semi-formal dresses created from pretty pastel material or the basic go-to colors, such as white, black and grey, will look wonderful this autumn. Remember, the key is to choose a number that features a standout cut rather than a striking shade.

Because of this, girls should make sure their minimalist dress fits like a glove before they paint the town red.

"Minimal needs to fit perfectly, so make an appointment with your tailor if it doesn't," according to the news outlet.

Kim and Khloe Kardashian spotted in the same dress
30 September 2010

Kim and Khloe Kardashian may be sisters, yet the two women have strikingly different body features. - Kim is petite and voluptuous while Khloe maintains an exceptionally-tall frame.

Believe it or not, the two girls can wear the same semi-formal dress and each look fabulous in it. Both ladies were spotted out in Los Angeles this past week sporting the same grey bandage dress, proving that two different gals can wear one gorgeous creation.

However, Khloe recently admitted that she's still battling body issues after years of being compared to her slimmer siblings.

"When I was a chunky little 8-year-old and I had these two beautiful sisters, I'd wonder, why don't I look like that," she told US Weekly.

We're sure there's one person out there who is crazy for Khloe - her husband, Lamar Odom! The couple, who just celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary, seem to be truly in love.

However, Khloe admitted that she gets peeved about the constant comparisons to Kim and her other sister, Kourtney.

"Kourtney's 5 feet, I'm 5-foot-10 and Kim is 5-foot-2. I will never look like them. No matter how skinny I am, that body will never be mine," she told the news source.

Kristen Bell talks about fashion choices
30 September 2010

Could Kristen Bell be any cuter? Probably not! The bubbly blonde, who currently stars alongside Hollywood heavyweights Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis in the outrageous rom-com You Again, may very well be the 'it' girl of the moment.

Of course, it's easy to see why - the lovely lady has a keen sense style. After popping up at red carpet appearances in striking creations, the general public is finally taking notice.

The gorgeous actress recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times and appeared to be a bit humble about the formal dresses she wears.

"I gravitate toward things that look equestrian or nautical. Mostly classic looks," she told the news outlet.

Still, Bell is no stranger to a woman's best friend - fancy footwear. In fact, the former Veronica Mars star gave the scoop on what shoes she prefers to show off.

"I will admit sometimes there are days when you feel like upping the ante and can justify wearing some gorgeous 5-inch heels to the movies because, hey, you're sitting down the whole time, anyway."

Long, gold formal dresses are perfect for fall
29 September 2010

With all the fall fashion news out there, it can be hard to remember it when shopping for formal dresses. However, there are a few style tips that may make selecting a trendy autumn gown extremely easy.

According to Style.com, high hemlines are out and long skirts are in. Ladies looking for a fashion-forward formal dress this fall should look for skirts that fall between skimming the shins and grazing the ankles.

And, in addition to being extremely fashionable, it seems that this trend has another benefit - women can take a break from teetering in stilettos. "The new lengths look smashing with easy-on-the-feet kitten heels and flat-soled boots," the news source reports.

When selecting which color to wear, women may want to jump off the color wheel and into the jewelry box. According to the news provider, fall runways were filled with all types of gold gowns, from fully metallic numbers to formal dresses that featured gold embellishments.

Even women who tend to shy away from glittery metallics may be able to find a gold formal dress that suits them. Instead of opting for a flashy sequined number, choose a gold-toned fabric that boasts a slight sheen. The ensemble is sure to be subtly alluring.

Pair your LBD with a white blazer
29 September 2010

In almost any situation, a little black dress is a woman's best friend - the number can be suitable for a romantic date, brunch with family and can even make the transition from day-at-the-office to fun-night-out. But as the temperatures are cooling down across much of the country, some ladies may be looking for a stylish piece to throw over their semi-formal dress.

Instead of grabbing a regular coat or shawl, truly stylish sisters may want to reach for a white blazer. According to Style.com, fashionistas like Emmanuelle Alt and Kate Lanphear have been spotted wearing white menswear-style jackets over their black outfits.

"It's a strong, graphic look, but the classicism of black and white keeps it anchored," reports the news source.

And for those who object to wearing white after Labor Day, one designer claims that mixing white into your wardrobe isn't about breaking rules - it's about creating harmony.

"White freshens those darker shades up," Jill Stuart told the news provider. "A creamy color makes everything brighter."

Remember, however, that when rocking this trend, fit is important. The blazer should be tailored and not too boxy, or it may overwhelm your black semi-formal dress.

Yves Klein blue - a popular hue for fall
29 September 2010

While black, navy and browns often rule fall fashions, there is one hue that will likely be a breath of fresh air in many women's wardrobes - Yves Klein blue, a lovely mix of cobalt and cornflower named for the 20th-century French abstract artist.

"We feel very secure looking at something blue, and this particular one has a luminous, intense quality that's really striking," Leatrice Eiseman, head of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training near Seattle, told Oprah.com. "It's a shade you can rely on - it's not ambiguous. You're drawn into it, almost like you're seeing a light illuminated through it. It's magical, mystical, infinite, deep."

And according to fashion expert Lisa Vickers, women may want to consider wearing semi-formal dresses in this hue.

"I love how the [Yves Klein blue] dress looks," Vickers told the news source. "Color has power - it's a gift you give to the people around you...[A monochromatic outfit] projects confidence."

Ladies looking for an ensemble in this color can shop online to peruse a wide variety of semi-formal dresses with the mere click of a button.

Wear a sequined semi-formal dress to a daytime event
29 September 2010

When dressing up for an evening event, many women opt for sequins - the shiny discs add the perfect amount of sparkle and flair to any formal dress. But ladies looking to go glam for an afternoon affair often dismiss sequins as too flashy for the daytime.

However, according to one of fashion's newest designers, former The Hills star Whitney Port, sequins may be just fine while the sun is up.

While describing her new collection to People Magazine, Port revealed that "there's a whole glam glitz section during the day," adding that "sequins during the day...is a fun work look as well."

Whether you are attending an afternoon wedding or luncheon, why not select a semi-formal dress that features a smattering of sequins? You'll look (and feel) fantastic as you sparkle in the sun.

But remember, while the embellishment can look great, dark hues and ornate fabric can make the number appear to dressy for daytime. Instead, opt for a light-colored dress with a simple silhouette - the sequins will add a subtle amount of glamor and you'll surely turn heads as you make your way around the party.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver wear the same dress
29 September 2010

When selecting a mother-of-the-bride dress, moms want to look elegant yet current, and it can be tricky to track down an age-appropriate number that isn't too matronly. However, judging by two of Hollywood's most stylish moms, finding the perfect gown isn't impossible.

At the Los Angeles premiere of You Again, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver looked fabulous - and identical! The two leading ladies showed up wearing the same formal dress.

While this would often be considered an act of fashion suicide, Curtis and Weaver had actually planned the stunt as a nod to a scene in the movie where their characters show up to a wedding wearing matching gowns.

The one-shouldered teal number flattered both women, as the ruched satin fabric hugged their curves without revealing too much skin.

Ladies should take advice from Curtis and Weaver when selecting their mother-of-the-bride dresses and consider gowns in bold hues with interesting silhouettes. A fresh color is a great way to keep from looking too mature, and certain cuts can be both trendy and age-appropriate.

Writer-comedian Tiffany Jones gives style tips for petite women
29 September 2010

Tiffany Jones may have one huge personality, but it's safe to say her frame is small. Standing slightly taller than five feet and maintaining a super-skinny body, the girl is nothing if not super-petite.

Jones spoke with Lucky Magazine about the time she accidentally spilled a drink on her jeans and was forced to perform a gig in an extra-long pink shirt. The event turned out to be a saving grace for the fashionable woman.

"Ever since, I've worn blousy shirts as dresses," she told the news outlet.

Girls who are looking to spice up their semi-formal dresses may want to take a cue from the cute comedienne. And, girls can look at the flipside to the situation - purchase a light semi-formal dress and wear it as a shirt at another, less-formal occasion.

Women may want to begin their search early in order to ensure they find the perfect fit. Still, those who are tiny, like Jones, might want to keep this style advice in mind while shopping.

"I'm 5'2', so an oversize shirt looks flowly on me, not overly sexy," she told the news outlet.

Singer-songwriter Diane Birch talks about her style personality
29 September 2010

Diane Birch is an up-and-coming singer and songwriter, but it's safe to say the girl enjoys good fashion. The talented lady recently spoke with Lucky Magazine and admitted she's a sucker for certain patterns.

"I find myself putting on random animal prints," she told the news outlet. "I like the chaos of it all - everything should be a little off. It gives an outfit more character."

Women looking to add a sense of drama to an ensemble have options other than showing off an animal print semi-formal dress. In fact, ladies may want to follow Birch's look in the magazine and wear a leopard-print belt and pair it with a green semi-formal number and pretty purple tights.

However, Diana is quick to admit there's another little accessory which can make a huge difference in a woman's outfit - hats!

"Some people have shoe obsessions - I have a hat obsession. To me, a hat is the cherry on top of an outfit," she told the news outlet.

Animal print coats look simply sexy over formal dresses
29 September 2010

Love them or hate them, one thing is for certain - animal prints are here to stay.

In fact, Lucky Magazine, the bible for women looking to be in-the-know about current trends, recently explained that animal print jackets are such a go-to piece of apparel that they are becoming ordinary instead of outrageous.

"I hunted down a leopard coat, thinking it would be fun to put on when I was feeling really saucy, but now I find myself reaching for it constantly," Virginia VanZanten, an assistant editor at Lucky Magazine, wrote in the publication.

Women who are hoping to add some zing to their evening dress may want to consider rocking a faux-fur leopard or cheetah-print jacket over a little black dress. The look will allow ladies to turn heads even before people get a glance at their semi-formal ensemble.

"It makes jeans and a T-shirt feel special and gives Mrs Robingson-sex appeal to a simple dress. I'm now convinced that the animal print is actually a neutral," VanZenten added.

Leather jackets - wise investment pieces
29 September 2010

When you see a leather jacket, what do you think of? Before visions of motorcycle meatheads pops into your brain, allow yourself to consider these pieces of outdoor wear as something unique and special.

Believe it or not, InStyle.com recommends that women throw a leather jacket over a semi-formal dress for a dramatic, unforgettable look.

"You can go cropped and a bit boxy, or choose one that has a shaped waist. It's a no-brainer with jeans, but don't hesitate to toss one over a shirred jersey dress" according to the news outlet.

This year's jackets are looking especially stylish, according to the news provider. And, there's plenty of different options from which to choose.

"This year's batch, with skins rendered velvety soft and nearly as weightless as silk, has a cool factor without contest. These zippered numbers deserve to be ubiquitous, possibly forever," according to the news source.

Girls may want to think of these pieces as investment attire, since they can be paired with semi-formal dresses all year long. Buy one this month and keep it for years to come.

Italian-style duds are hot for next season
29 September 2010

While many of us long to emulate the whimsical lifestyle of Mediterranean dwellers, there is good news for style-mavens - fashion from the area is making its way across the pond.

According to the Associated Press, traditional duds from some of Europe's hottest countries were spotted on the runway at Milan Fashion Week.

"The 1970's glam is most evident in a series of hot evening dresses in colorful metallic satin with intricate fringe detailing. Daytime is cinched by a gold belt with playful tassels," the news outlet reports.

This is fantastic news for women searching for an unforgettable formal dress. Girls should look for scores of options online in these styles in order to make a lasting impression at their next springtime affair.

And, ladies should take note of all important hues that will be in vogue once we've made it through another winter.

"Bright shades of orange, purple and green contrast with safari beige and basic black," the news source reports.

Spray-on clothing - the next-big-fashion-thing?
29 September 2010

Women who are looking to make room in their closets take note. According to AOL.com, a new fashion fad may be seen on women's bodies around the world relatively shortly - spray-on apparel.

This clothing-in-a-can is the brainchild of Manel Torres, a Spanish fashion designer and academic visitor at Imperial College in London.

"When I first began this project I wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick, and comfortable material," he said in a statement. "In my quest to make the fabric, I ended up returning to the earliest principles of the earliest textiles, such as felt."

In the explanatory video the news source shows on their website, a simple can sprays foam on the upper body of a mannequin. After several minutes, the model looks as though she is sporting a gorgeous, white wool shirt!

Of course, it may be a while before this fashion fad is available for style-mavens around the globe. Until then, women can opt to rock a felt formal dress at their next big event. The material is both fashion-forward and uber-comfortable.

Bare bellies will be hot for the spring
29 September 2010

Get ready to get your midriff in shape for the spring. According to recent reports, one of the hottest trends for next season calls for women to bare their bellies.

In fact, StyleList.com reports that ambitious fashionistas should be prepared to show off their abs on a regular basis.

"Not-quite-crop tops, but tops that will bare some skin with any movement are all over the runways. They are subtle and sexy, leaving lots to the imagination," the news source reports.

Girls who are looking to make a statement in a semi-formal dress can certainly heed this advice. In fact, there are scores of ditties out there that feature spectacular cut-outs in the midsection.

Of course, the basic rule of thumb with all fashion is not to overdo it. And, girls are advised to make sure they're comfortable before indulging in these types of semi-formal dresses.

"While they don't reveal a lot, they definitely reveal just enough. More than enough if you [have] anything other than a toned mid-section," according to the news outlet.

Mad Men actress talks about love of skin-tight semi-formal dresses
29 September 2010

Alexandra Ella is an up-and-coming actress, and by the looks of her recent red carpet appearances, it's safe to say the young lady is already making quite the impression on the general public.

The beautiful brunette, who has lent her acting talents to everything from Party Down to Mad Men, stepped out at the Macy's Passport Presents Glamorama Fashion Extravaganza in quite the perfect number. Her purple and nude-colored semi-formal dress, which was strapless and fell right above her knees, was simply splendid.

Still, it may have been the dress' cut that the leggy lady most adored herself. The pin-thin actress spoke with Celebuzz.com and admitted she's a sucker for showing off her figure.

"I like fitted clothing for the most part. As long as it fits really nicely, I'm happy," she told the news outlet.

Ella was all smiles throughout the evening, which goes to show that sporting a semi-formal dress that makes a woman feel beautiful can boost her self-confidence in an instant. Those who search early for the ideal number are bound to feel like a million bucks while out on the town.

Lizzie Miller talks about her plus-size supermodel status
29 September 2010

It was just last year that Lizzie Miller went from plus-size model to a glossy-magazine sensation. The gorgeous woman, who stands at 5-foot-11 and wears a size 12, appeared in Glamour magazine in 2009 baring her body - as well as a surprising amount of belly fat.

The response from the public? Almost all positive, she recently told the Daily Mail.

"Seeing someone not airbrushed, with an average looking body, compared to all those stick-thin pictures of perfection - I guess people thought 'Wow! This girl looks like me,'" Miller told the news outlet.

After the surprising images ran in the publication, Miller's career took off. Since then, she has starred in countless photo spreads wearing gorgeous formal dresses and recently strutted her stuff in OneStopPlus.com's first-ever plus-size fashion show.

Lizzie credits her recent stardom to helping boost her body image, something she battles even while enjoying a lucrative career as a model.

"My weight has been an issue I've struggled with all my life, but the response I got made me realize other people out there felt like me," she told the news outlet.

Comfortable bridal shoes can be just as important as a wedding dress
29 September 2010

Every woman who is aisle-bound is concerned about her wedding gown, but what about her shoes? Brides spend months picking out their dream wedding dresses only to leave their footwear to the final minute.

Glamour.com recommends that girls not only purchase their shoes early, but take extra steps to make sure they're reception-ready.

"To ensure you don't take a spill during your first dance, scuff the soles of your shoes before you hit the dance floor," the news outlet reports. "Either take a few swipes at the soles with some extra-gritty sandpaper, or throw on your shoes and drag your feet across some crumbly pavement."

Women who are about to become a Mrs should remember to begin their search early before their all-important day. Girls should make sure to try on their entire outfit - veil, dress and shoes - months ahead of time.

And, don't forget - these pretty-handy pointers extend to men as well.

"If your groom is wearing fancy-pants dress shoes...make sure he [scuffs the soles of his shoes as well]," the news source reports.

The one rule of fall fashion - there are no rules
28 September 2010

Primary colors. Loads of layers. It seems as though women are being bombarded with endless tutorials about what to wear this fall, doesn't it?

Good news - according to StyleList.com, there may be only one rule to follow this autumn when it comes to showing off new duds, which is that there are no rules at all.

"You can be glamorous morning, noon and night. You can mix prints. You can wear sequins in the sun. The only rule is to try to look your best and to have fun and feel good about what you're wearing," celebrity stylist and fashion commentator Mary Alice Stephenson told the news outlet.

For women who are scouring through formal dresses at the moment and are yearning to make a huge impression at their next school shindig, this is fantastic news. Girls who aren't afraid to be a bit daring may want to pair a faux-fur jacket over a knee-length number, or even sport a glittery pair of gorgeous high heels.

Whatever a gal decides, all young ladies should heed Stephenson's advice and make sure they're comfortable. Feeling fantastic in a dress can do wonders for a girl's self-confidence.

Denim - do wear it this fall
28 September 2010

Get ready to rummage through your closet and dig out some oldies but goodies. According to the Los Angeles Times, denim is the darling fabric of the fall.

"It's a fresh twist on a classic," celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez told the news outlet. "It's been such a faux pas since the early '90s, so now it feels like a rebellious and modern way to wear [it.]"

Chavez has dressed scores of Hollywood starlets, including the petite and pretty Rachel Bilson, who is often spotted out and about in the fabulous retro fabric.

And while girls currently picking out their homecoming dress may not want to choose a piece created entirely from this material, slight traces of denim in an ensemble can work wonders. Ladies might want to sport a denim vest over a Little Black Dress, or even carry a cute denim clutch all night long

Still, women should make sure not to overdo it.

"This season's looks are more subtle than in seasons past - think tie-dye and '80s-style bleaching, or over-dying and color saturation - thus, the possibility of denim on denim," the news outlet reports.

Gisele Bundchen wows crowds with an unforgettable formal dress
28 September 2010

Leave it to one of the most gorgeous women in the universe to hit one out of the ballpark. Aside from having an uber-hot hubby, a beautiful baby and - oh yes - loads of money from her supermodel career, Gisele Bundchen recently proved that the woman maintains a slick sense of style.

Bundchen just stepped out at The Brazil Foundation's Eighth Annual Gala Benefit in a floor-length number that will be etched in our memory for eons. Mrs Tom Brady was sporting a sequined maroon piece that glittered in all the lights and managed to leave the world nothing short of giddy.

And while the color and material of the piece would have been enough to earn our praise, Gis' formal dress success didn't end there. In fact, it was when the women turned around and showed off her slightly open back that she truly had us in awe.

Bundchen is obviously a babe, but it's nice to know the woman shows off her bod in the best formal dresses out there.

Halle Berry set to star in film about shoes
28 September 2010

Attention all shoe addicts of the world - a new Hollywood movie is in the works, and it's bound to leave girls drooling.

According to Women's Wear Daily, Halle Berry is set to star in Shoe Addicts Anonymous, a delightful comedy about four fashionable women, all of whom have a footwear obsession and a 7.5 shoe size.

"Halle related to [the part]," Mark Bozek, the film's producer, told the news source. "She gets all these serious parts and said, 'Nobody thinks of me as a comedic actress' but she's really funny. She also loves shoes."

Of course, as BlackVoices.com was quick to point out, Berry's footwear is as varied as can be. From sexy strappy sandals paired with an adorable daytime dress to pretty grey pumps she rocked with a gorgeous semi-formal number, it seems as though the woman has oodles of options in her closet.

On the downside, women may have to hit the mall for the next year or so to get their footwear fix - the film is slated for release next fall.

The fifties - inspiring fashion, decades later
25 September 2010

Blame it on Betty Draper. While the fashions from former decades are currently influencing the style of 2010 as we speak, there's one block of ten years that's especially unforgettable - the '50s. And, according to the New York Times, this trend shows no sign of slowing down.

"Cozy sweaters in pastels and neutrals wrapped around the bodice of a floral cocktail dress or delicate bustier inevitably inject some sex appeal and conjure up images of Bridgitte Bardot's and Sophia Loren's effortlessly alluring style," the news source reports.

Ladies currently sifting through formal dresses for their next big shindig can certainly embody sentiments of Mad Men while reminding the world they're a modern day woman. Girls can search for full-bodied skirts and pair them with striking, modern day heels.

Also, remember to leave your pearls at home! While these beautiful baubles are extraordinary even in the digital era, too many retro details can evoke an old-fashioned appearance.

Of course, a few '50s details can go a long way. Channel your inner Peggy Olson and go crazy.

Sofia Vergara shows off her curves in a gorgeous LBD
23 September 2010

Curvaceous girls around the world can cheer, as it seems as though these ladies have a new style icon to worship - Sofia Vergara! The Colombian-born beauty, who has become a staple of the red carpet since her hit television series, Modern Family, took off last year, is regularly photographed wearing formal dresses that celebrate her curves.

And the number that Vergara wore to the third annual Self magazine Women Doing Good Awards, held at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City was no exception. Vergara rocked a little black dress that was anything but ordinary. The semi-formal dress boasted a black lace overlay and a bustier-style silhouette that hugged her voluptuous figure.

While the form-fitting dress showed off her physique, her actress balanced the look by not revealing too much skin - the strapless piece featured a modest, just-above-the-knee hemline and her wavy locks covered her exposed shoulders.

However, when getting into character on set, it seems that the brunette bombshell uses her wardrobe to boost her performance.

"My style is a bit similar to my character's," Vergara told InStyle magazine. "I wear fitted clothes in real life, but I take Gloria to another level for the comedy."

Printed maxi-skirts - the next big trend for formal dresses
25 September 2010

It's been decades since the dawn of flower power, but believe it or not, the hippie look is in! For those who adore bellbottom jeans and crave vibrant colors, have we got a trend for you.

According to FabSugar.com, maxi skirts are back and here to stay. And, believe it or not, the dress detail doesn't have to be accompanied by a tambourine and peace sign. In fact, today's modern woman can sport it and feel up-to-date.

"The printed maxi skirt is making its way into our fall wardrobes in chiffon, silk, lighter fabrics, and pretty prints," the news source reports.

Of course, there are steps a gal should take in order to bring the look to the new millennium. A pair of sexy, sleek boots may work wonders, while the news source has some other pointers.

"Just remember to keep things simple and basic on top, and if you're craving a fab finisher, belt it and go," according to the news outlet.

Women who want to evoke a smidgen of the '60s with their look may even want to pop a flower in their hair. The look will be both gorgeous and absolutely groovy.

Make a statement with a wavy, uneven neckline
25 September 2010

When it comes to semi-formal dresses, most necklines are straight, while others are asymmetrical. But, what about wavy ones? Believe it or not, a neckline that evokes the motion of the ocean can turn a simple getup into a fantastically-fetching number.

Case in point? Eva Longoria Parker's dress that she sported at a recent gala in Paris. The Desperate Housewives beauty was dressed to the nines in a strapless piece created from oodles of black lace. Her choice, which was the epitome of sophistication and style, took her look from simple to significant.

Of course, the most awe-inspiring element of her ensemble may be attributed to her notable neckline. Rather than being jagged or simply straight, the dress detail was wonderfully wavy. Ooh-la-la!

All in all, Parker killed it at her most recent appearance. We have a feeling that as the lovely Latina walked around with her uber-hot hubby, Tony Parker, by her side, she turned heads and embodied a certain je-ne-se-quoi.

Maroon formal dresses are absolutely marvelous
25 September 2010

There's no denying it - maroon is an absolutely magnificent color. Much deeper than red and yet not quite purple, it's safe to say it's one of the most striking shades for women to sport in the fall.

And, wouldn't you know it, celebrities are already going hysterical for this hue. In fact, Julianna Margulies, eternal beauty and star of The Good Wife, recently stepped out at a party in a gorgeous maroon semi-formal dress that was nothing short of perfection.

Margulies' getup was perfect for a casual-yet-important affair. The number, which appeared to be made from a magnificent velvety material, accentuated her alabaster complexion and soft, flowy mane.

Just a few months earlier, Kyra Sedgwick, star of The Closer, stepped out at the Primetime Emmy Awards in an unforgettable maroon ball gown. The pretty performer rocked a splendid strapless number that made her look like a million bucks (and ten years younger)!

Of course, while this color is one of the most striking and memorable tints ladies can sport as the leaves begin to change, it may not be for everyone. Girls searching for a formal dress at the moment should remember to look early so they can locate "the one."

Pumpkin-colored bridesmaid dresses sure to be a hit
23 September 2010

As summer comes to a close, brides who are planning an autumn wedding may soon need to start making some important decisions, such as the color of bridesmaid dresses. Given the limitless amount of hues, however, selecting a shade that is elegant yet seasonally appropriate can seem overwhelming.

Instead of putting off the search for another day, garner inspiration from Odette Yustman, who arrived at the premiere of her new film, You Again, in a truly eye-catching color - pumpkin!

Yustman proved that this rich, fall tone can be glamorous and refined. Her gown featured the perfect balance of structure and draping, and the tailored silhouette kept the the orange-colored fabric looking especially elegant.

When selecting a bold hue for your bridesmaid dresses, remember to ask your gal pals to keep their cosmetics minimal and their accessories simple - too much dark makeup or an abundance of chunky jewelry could easily compete with the rich color and create an overwhelming ensemble.

Instead, bridesmaids can follow Yustman's lead. The brunette beauty complemented her lovely pumpkin gown with classic red lipstick and delicate jeweled earrings.

New study suggests men don't notice heels
23 September 2010

It's no secret that many women go gaga for great shoes, and after buying the perfect formal dress, finding ideal heels is usually the next step. However, ladies who slip on stilettos in hopes of snagging a man's attention may want to rethink their game plan.

According to the Telegraph UK, a new study, led by experts at Northumbria University, is assessing whether the change in a woman's posture caused by wearing heels sends a signal that has an impact on men.

"Women are spending money on high heels...presumably to make themselves look good and add to what nature has given them," Dr Nick Neave, an evolutionary psychologist, told the news source.

The news outlet reports that the study has found that men can't even tell if a woman is hearing high heels when they walk.

However, that doesn't mean women should forgo wearing heels with their formal dresses - after all, your outfit should be for you! As long as the shoe complements your ensemble, is comfortable and makes you feel good, slip on heels of any height.

Trains - they're not just for wedding dresses anymore
22 September 2010

Most girls envision walking down the aisle in a white wedding dress that features a huge, Lady Diana-esque train. For women who dream of a fairytale princess wedding, the rule of thumb is usually the longer, the better.

Still, in today's day and age where fashion runs the gamut, why should the dress detail be solely for brides? Trains can turn a humdrum piece into an unforgettable ball gown, a mundane creation into something that will turn heads all night long.

Eliana Miglio, an Italian actress, certainly knows this. The brunette beauty recently made an appearance at the Venice Film Festival in a striking strapless peach cocktail-length number that fell to her upper thigh. The piece allowed her long, luscious legs to be seen by scores of energetic onlookers.

However, Miglio added a bit of elegance to her skimpy ensemble with - what else? - a train! The material, which was made from an elegant chiffon fabric, cascaded from the back of her dress and fell beneath her in a unique, elegant fashion.

Women currently looking for homecoming dresses may want to consider sporting a short dress with a train. The design allows girls to appear refined while still giving the world that come-hither look.

Hilary Swank sparkles during Fashion Week
22 September 2010

While New York Fashion Week may have come to a close, people are still buzzing about the celebrity appearances - who wore what and where they wore it. And, it seems that one Hollywood A-lister put a bit of thought into one of her Fashion Week ensembles.

At a recent show, Hilary Swank glowed in a gold-sequined semi-formal dress. It was both demure and flirtatious, and showcased the actress' radiant bronzed skin. Trust us, the Million Dollar Baby star looked like a million bucks!

"I just thought that this was a nice end-of-summer, beginning-of-fall dress," Swank told People Magazine. "It still felt light. I still have a little bit of tan left!"

And it seems that the brown-eyed beauty may have had a vested interested in watching the collections of formal gowns parade down the runways. "I'm excited to always learn about new designers," she told the news source. "I have a movie opening called Conviction next month, so I have a lot of dresses I need to find."

Ladies looking for formal dresses for upcoming events may want to follow Swank's lead and start searching early to make sure there is enough time to locate the perfect gown.

Fashion Week includes first-ever plus-size show
22 September 2010

Women of all shapes and sizes often wear formal dresses, but it seemed that New York Fashion Week never showcased designs for curvaceous ladies - until now. People.com reports that a plethora of A-list stars were on hand for Fashion Week's first-ever plus-size show.

"This is a milestone in the plus-size community. We've never had anything like this," actress Nikki Blonsky told the news source. "To be in New York City Fashion Week, which I think is the biggest fashion week in the world, to be here is just a huge thing for us."

Plus-size model Emme agreed whole-heartedly. "You have to join forces to make a statement and to be part of a revolution," she told the news provider. "It's monumental in its reach."

InStyle.com reports that actresses Gabourey Sidibe and Kaycee Stroh had front row seats to the show, as did America's Next Top Model winner Whitney Thompson, and fellow Top Model alum, Toccara Jones, walked the runway.

Women looking for fantastic formal dresses that suit their voluptuous physiques can shop online and peruse hundreds of gowns with the click of a button.

Turn heads in a snakeskin print semi-formal dress
22 September 2010

While floral fabrics can be dainty and demure and leopard prints can bring out your wild side, there is one pattern that makes a sexy-yet-unexpected statement - snakeskin! This reptilian print is sleek and interesting, and references the jungle without making you look as if you just returned from a safari.

However, when wearing the bold print, a skintight number may be too much. Instead, create balance by selecting a flowing fabric that stays close to your body yet floats away from your figure.

Modern Family's Sofia Vergara recently nailed this look when she stepped out for a charity auction in New York City. The Colombian-born bombshell wore a python-print chiffon number. The snakeskin design wrapped glamorously around the starlet, letting the dress' pattern - and not the silhouette - celebrate her curves.

When wearing a semi-formal dress with a bold pattern, remember to keep your hair, makeup and accessories simple - a complicated and severe updo or layers of necklaces and bangles can compete with the gown's print and create an overwhelming ensemble.

Look hot in colder seasons
22 September 2010

While summer is slowly coming to a close and temperatures may still be mild across much of the country, women preparing for events in the upcoming months must start shopping for formal dresses appropriate for colder seasons.

But some ladies may be at a loss when selecting a sexy formal dress that is suitable for a chillier night out - after all, when you can't show as much skin, how sultry can you be? Don't worry, just take a few tips from Eva Mendes, and you can still ooze sex-appeal in a gown that keeps you completely covered in the cooler months.

At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Last Night, Mendes walked the red carpet in a floor-length black number that featured no slit, low neckline or plunging back. How did she still manage to sizzle?

The Hitch star achieved an elegantly sexy appearance by choosing a curve-hugging fit (which flattered her flawless physique) in a spectacular fabric. According to InStyle.com, the "subtly embellished cut velvet gave the film noir design a seductive shimmer."

Women looking for a seasonally appropriate formal dress should remember that you don't have to show lots of skin to look sexy - you can remain covered as long as you consider the fit and fabric.

Sophia Loren's gown would make a glamorous mother-of-the-bride dress
22 September 2010

It seems that all too often, mothers-of-the-bride opt for basic black dresses or understated pantsuits. However, moms should feel free to embrace the elegance of the occasion and pick a show-stopping, celebratory number.

And to those who think truly glamorous gowns don't exist for women over 50, prepare to be proven wrong. Earlier this month, actress Sophia Loren, who is 75-years-old, took the stage at the Miss Italy pageant and wowed in an amazing silver dress.

The number was relatively simple, with delicate yet intricate silver beading toward the top of the dress, and boasted a floor-length hemline and long sleeves. However, to add a bit of her famous sex appeal, the gown featured a deep neckline that highlighted her glowing bronzed skin.

Ladies searching for an elegant mother-of-the-bride dress may want to use the Italian icon as a style guide. Look for a gown in a neutral color that is figure-flattering, and feel free to select a silhouette with an element of youth, whether it's a slight slit or a moderately open neckline.

Celebs dish on age-appropriate style
22 September 2010

When picking out the latest trends in fall fashion, it seems that age really is just a number. Harper's Bazaar recently paired three of today's hottest starlets with three classic Hollywood beauties, and dressed each duo in the same ensemble, proving that women of all ages can rock the same trends.

When asked about her personal style, 23-year-old Ashely Greene replied that she didn't fit into one particular category. "I like to mix and match. I don't want to be stuck in just one era," the Twilight beauty told the news source.

Cheryl Ladd and Peggy Lipton, who are 59 and 64 respectively, addressed the issue of embracing trends while remaining age-appropriate.

"As you get older, you develop your style. For me, the simpler, the better," Ladd told the news provider.

Lipton, however, offered advice to the younger women. "Don't dress too old," she cautioned. "I don't like to see a young person dressed old."

It seems that one woman following Lipton's style rule is Camilla Belle, 23, who participated in the photo shoot as well. "I am young enough that I can afford to be experimental," she added.

Ladies of any age who are searching for formal dresses should remember to have fun while shopping for gowns - while age-appropriateness is important, it is certainly not the only element to consider!

Gloves with wedding dresses - too princessey, or absolutely perfect?
22 September 2010

Every little girl envisions growing up to be a princess, and when an engagement ring is finally placed on our finger, it's safe to say the daydreams return.

Of course, there's one facet of wedding day-wear that has left brides-to-be around the country divided - white gloves. Some girls believe these adorable accessories can complete a woman's fairytale affair, while others maintain they are much too over-the-top.

So, what's a woman who's about to become a Mrs to do? For starters, ladies should remember to stick to their own personality and style.

Girls yearning for a dramatic walk down the aisle may want to indulge in these stunning accessories. Also, women who are getting hitched during evening hours - when elegance is often preferred over simplicity - might want to consider channeling their inner Disney princess and giving them a go.

Of course, women planning a daytime event who still desire some spectacle might want to rock shorter gloves. The hand accessories will be the perfect, subtle pick-me-up for a whimsical wedding gown.

As with all details of a wedding, the smartest thing a girl can do is to plan ahead. Search high and low for gorgeous gloves and make your affair one to remember.

Fall into spring right now
22 September 2010

The days are getting shorter and the air is getting crisper. That can only mean one thing, ladies - fall is officially here.

Of course, the duds that are being shown off on the catwalks are always two steps ahead of the rest of the world. Luckily, StyleList.com recently reported on a number of spring runway looks that can be enjoyed right now.

"Sheer fabrics popped up here and there on the Spring 2010 runways, but it's been exposing itself all over the 2011 ones," the news source reports. Girls who are still searching for their homecoming dress may want to think about this fabric detail while shopping.

Also, there's a spring hue that will certainly be hot this October and November - nude. And, ladies who prefer stark colors - but are bored with black and white semi-formal dresses - may want to give this shade a shot.

"Neutrals continue to be a big trend but in addition to the previous seasons' nude and [caramel] shades, designers have been exploring a cooler side with grays," according to the news outlet.

Gossip Girl's upcoming season may feature more formal dresses
21 September 2010

Earlier this week, the CW's hit series Gossip Girl premiered, and gals around the country undoubtedly flocked to their sets. While some viewers may have been waiting to see what shenanigans the Upper East Siders had gotten themselves into, others tuned in for one reason - to see what Serena and Blair were wearing!

It's no secret that the program has become an on-air fashion guide for fledgling fashionistas around the country, and Gossip Girl stylist Eric Daman recently spoke to Glamour.com about what viewers can expect to see the leading ladies wearing.

"We have so many scenes where we need gowns," Daman told the news source. "I wanted it to be like higher high fashion...and just take it to the next level. I wanted the girls to look sparkly and amazing and just a little more over the top than usual - a fashion free for all! We treated the characters as who they were, but just taken up a notch."

Girls hoping to emulate the styles of their favorite Gossip Girl can search online for some truly glamorous formal dresses. Shopping for a gown early will ensure that the number arrives well before the date of the big event, leaving plenty of time for shoe shopping and accessorizing.

Eva Mendes wows in a dress fit for a bride
21 September 2010

While many brides-to-be search for a traditional white wedding dress for their big day, other women opt for gowns that are bright-colored, fashion-forward numbers. Some gals, however, desire the best of both worlds - a wedding dress that is classic but a bit unconventional. But finding such an ensemble may seem tricky.

Though she wasn't walking down the aisle, Eva Mendes recently worked the red carpet at the Moscow premiere of The Other Guys in a gorgeous gown that would look stunning on any bride. Like many traditional wedding dresses, the light-colored number boasted a floor-length skirt and a flowing train. Unlike classic bridal gowns, however, the dress featured a subtle floral print and a plunging neckline.

While the ethereal fabric would make any bride look like an angel as she floated down the aisle, guests would be sure to do a double take to get a closer look at the dress' print. Brides-to-be who are searching for a wedding dress that is both traditional and fashion-forward should start shopping early to ensure they have enough time to track down the perfect gown.

Seafoam green is a hit on spring 2011 runways
17 September 2010

While many women are excited about the new fall fashions that are flooding the streets, other ladies must plan ahead for events happening this spring, like weddings. And, according to the runways at New York Fashion Week, it looks like a color once considered a fashion faux-pas is being embraced by the top designers - seafoam green!

According to Elle, this soft, ethereal hue was spotted in various designer's collections, including Carolina Herrera, Gary Graham, Rag & Bone and Diane von Furstenberg, and its prevalence cemented the shade's resurgence come spring 2011.

This minty color is a great idea for winter and springtime bridesmaid dresses. It can pair wonderfully with the icy tones of winter, like whites and silvers, and it also mixes great with the brighter hues popular in the springtime, like buttery yellows and vibrant turquoises.

Women looking for bridesmaid dresses should start shopping for the gowns early, as many of the numbers are made in China and certain holidays in the country, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, can impact manufacturing and shipping times.

How to find the perfect blazer to throw over your formal dress
17 September 2010

While formal dresses are often the pinnacle of femininity, women often accessorize their demure gowns with masculine accents to create an interesting, complementary balance between girlish frills and tailored sophistication.

"The menswear trend gives an empowering edge to women," celebrity stylist Joey Tierney told StyleList.

While executing this trend can be difficult, it is not impossible. Women can throw blazers over a formal dress for a fashion-forward yet accessible look. However, selecting the appropriate fit may be key.

"Make sure that your jacket fits you well, otherwise it could create a boxy silhouette," Tierney told the news source. "You want to keep it sexy and make sure that the clothing you are wearing accentuates your body and doesn't hide it. Just because the trend is called menswear doesn't mean you have to dress like a man. It means you create a feminine classy look with well-tailored lines."

Jeannie Mai, host of How Do I Look? on The Style Network, agrees. "Fit is fashion. Even in a boyfriend blazer, shoulder seams should be aligned with your own and darting should fall along your bust line appropriately," she told the news provider.

Leather cocktail dresses were hot at the VMAs
14 September 2010

At last weekend's MTV Video Music Awards, today's hottest performers stepped out to celebrate the iconic network's biggest night. And while the musicians took center stage, some of Hollywood's most beautiful actresses showed up - and stole the spotlight on the red carpet!

Unlike other, more traditional awards shows, the VMAs allow starlets to channel their inner-rockstars and embrace the edge. Emma Stone and Rosario Dawson did just that using the same trick - they both wore gorgeous semi-formal dresses made from leather.

Stone, who rose to fame after appearing in 2007's Superbad, dazzled in a fitted black leather sheath, sparkling black pumps and a purple clutch. Dawson opted for a strapless indigo-hued number paired with teal high heels and red nails.

Both women looked phenomenal, as the leather gowns hugged their curves and showcased their fantastic physiques. Most importantly, however, the leading ladies maintained the perfect balance of edginess and glamor by complementing their semi-formal dresses with elegant jewelry. Stone wore modest hoops and a cocktail ring while Dawson rocked dangling diamond earrings and a matching bracelet.

Women who want to embrace the rockstar within should take a few pointers from Stone and Dawson - a leather dress is great as long as it's balanced with classic accessories.

Styling tips for fall fashions
15 September 2010

With autumn almost here, women are getting ready to dive head first into the finest of fall fashions. But ladies can do more than merely shake up their looks with new pieces of clothing - they can also try a few new styling tips to create some fresh fall ensembles.

Instead of covering your formal dress with a dainty shawl, pair the gown with an edgy leather jacket. "The surprising play of opposites makes for a cool combo," recommends InStyle.com.

However, the news source suggests that if you want to wear a traditional tailored coat over your formal dress, select a jacket that falls above the gown's hemline, not below it, to cheekily showoff a bit of the dress. But remember, if your skirt is peeking out from beneath your overcoat, make sure the two pieces complement one another and that the colors don't clash.

Finally, while too much coordination can leave you appearing too "dyed-to-match," you can keep your look cohesive by wearing a shade of lipstick that matches your formal dress. "Zero in on just your pout, and paint it a shade taken from your outfit," adds the website. "Best to stick with timeless reds or rich, deep tones - steer clear of bubble gum pinks and frosty hues, which could push the look into costume territory."

Consider color and fabric when selecting a modest-but-sexy formal dress
10 September 2010

When women want to look sexy in a formal dress, they often opt for body-hugging silhouettes that show lots of skin. However, a body-covering gown can be just as sultry as long as fabric type and color are taken into consideration.

At the Venice Film Festival's premiere of Reign of Assassins, Michelle Yeoh stunned onlookers in a formal dress that was sexy without being too revealing, due to the material and hue. The alluring, light emerald tone perfectly complemented the actress' golden skin and the ethereal fabric, which elegantly draped to the floor, subtly hugged her curves while flowing away from her body.

However, the gown did reveal a bit of skin - the one-shoulder number showed off Yeoh's collarbone and upper arms, and highlighted her glowing skin.

Women looking for a sexy formal dress that isn't too revealing should remember the importance of fabric and color selection - a gown doesn't have to have a hem up-to-there to be a sultry show-stopper!

However, those shopping online for a formal dress for an upcoming autumn event may want to place their order as early as possible. Since many gowns are made in China, various holidays, such as the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, can impact manufacturing and shipping times.

While many women are excitedly shopping for the hottest garments for fall, others are already looking ahead to spring, as New York Fashion Week kicks into gear and the world's top designers are showcasing their Spring 2011 collections.

For those who are planning their weddings, the timing couldn't be more perfect, as women often select their wedding's color scheme - including bridesmaids dresses and decorations - months in advance.

"The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones," Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said. "By cleverly combining complementary colors - those that are opposites on the color wheel - they have created a striking intensity in the palette."

According to the Pantone Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011, the season's top color is honeysuckle, a magenta-like shade. Other popular hues are lighter versions of jewel tones, like warm corals, vibrant blues and honeyed yellow.

Ladies shopping for bridesmaid dresses for their spring wedding may want to consider purchasing gowns in these hues - they are sure to be a fashion-forward hit!

Michelle Williams sparkles in a demure formal dress
09 September 2010

Much of young Hollywood is notorious for wearing formal dresses that show major skin, which may lead some gals to believe it's nearly impossible to look glamorous and sexy in a gown that's not too revealing.

However, at the Venice Film Festival premiere of her new film, Meek's Cutoff, Michelle Williams proved that formal dresses don't have to be cut-to-there to be show-stoppers.

The former Dawson's Creek star stepped onto the red carpet in a dazzling floor-length number that featured a sprinkling of beading, a darling bow by the collar and sleeves that stopped just above her elbow.

While Williams was nearly covered from head-to-toe, the formal dress was anything but matronly. Her gown was perfectly fitted, and subtly showcased the actress' gorgeous curves. The flowing cream fabric gave the dress an ethereal quality, and the intricate bead-work added to the youthful appearance.

Gals looking for a modest formal dress that is still age-appropriate may want to follow Williams' lead and opt for a number in a romantic hue that fits to a tee.

Victoria Beckham talks about being a fashion designer
9/8/2010

It seems that every celebrity, from Sarah Jessica Parker to Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, has started their own fashion line. Few A-listers, however, seem to garner the critical acclaim of Victoria Beckham, the Spice Girl-turned-designer, who was recently nominated by the British Fashion Council for designer brand of the year and praised by fashion icon Anna Wintour.

And while Beckham may work incredibly hard at her successful collections, telling The New York Times that she doesn't "do anything by halves," it seems that she asks herself one simple question when designing ensembles.

"I might get a piece of fabric and tie it around me, then ask an assistant to pin it for me," Posh Spice told the news source. "I'm not claiming to be a master draper. The bottom line is: Would I wear this?"

Ladies who are shopping for a formal dress online may want to take Beckham's advice to heart. Instead of wearing a trendy number because it's current and relevant, girls can select a gown that they love, and they will surely feel comfortable in it once it arrives.
