Great ways to wear sequins
29 October 2010
There are few adornments more festive than sequins. These shiny discs instantly add flash and sparkle to any ensemble, but women may be unsure of how to best wear the fantastic embellishment. However, there are a few different approaches women can take when they want to wear sequins.
"Who needs puny paillettes when you can go totally oversize? Major sequins make a major statement," Glamour.com reports. "And they're not just for the red carpet - we promise you'll cause quite a fuss if you show up to your next cocktail party wearing [a semi-formal dress with large sequins]."
Ladies looking for a more subtle way to rock the embellishments can throw on a sequined cardigan or scarf. It will add a bit of shine without appearing over-the-top.
Finally, gals can incorporate sequins into their ensemble with their accessories. Shoes and handbags covered in sparkling paillettes will add flash to your ensemble. However, remember not to pair the pieces with a sequined semi-formal dress. Too many embellishments may create a glittering, overwhelming mess!
Rachel Leigh Cook talks about the pressure to look thin in a semi-formal dress
30 October 2010
Rachel Leigh Cook may be best known for starring in the '90s flick She's All That, but the actress has been acting for years. Still, it looks like the pressure of looking like a stick-thin Hollywood starlet still affects her.
The beautiful brunette took the time to speak with the Huffington Post in order to remind women that what you see on the big screen isn't always what you get.
"Nothing that you see is real, even if you look at what looks like a candid photo of someone, anything can be done. It is false advertising and false advertising is a crime so why isn't this a crime? I'm just up in arms about it," she told the news outlet.
Women currently looking at formal dresses for prom and are hoping to slip into a smaller size may want to remember Cook's wise words. All girls should be happy with the skin they're in.
And, don't forget - those actresses on the silver screen may be carrying more weight than you think.
"People need to know that there are actual lenses that are put on cameras that make people stretched out," she told the news source.
Manolo Blahnik talks about shoes
30 October 2010
If there's one name that's synonymous with shoes, it's Manolo Blahnik. The footwear designer, who became a household name during Sex and the City's television reign, has left fashionistas around the world drooling.
Girls who are currently searching for the perfect pumps to pair with their next formal dress may want to read on. As it turns out, Blahnik spoke with the Boston Globe and explained what he believes makes a shoe super-sexy.
"First of all, you have to have a hint of flesh. You see hands all the time. You see faces all the time. But the toes, that's something you don't always see," he told the news outlet.
Of course, girls should remember that when it comes to daring footwear, sometimes less is more. A small glimpse of skin can sometimes go a heck of a long way.
"The most important thing is that you have to do it beautifully because if you show too much toe, it can be kind of vulgar. You have to do it not-so-obvious. You have to do it beautifully. That's the secret," he told the news outlet.
Pair a Navajo sweater over a semi-formal dress and look so-in-chic
30 October 2010
We've said it before and we'll say it again - sweater vests are incredible pieces to throw over a semi-formal dress. Heavier than a spring jacket but not quite a coat, this is the one type of outwear that is preferable during the fall.
Luckily, there's a new design that's making waves at the moment - Navajo and Nordic patterns. And, this sultry style has been garnering the attention of some fashion experts as well.
"These knit patterns evoke a feeling of getting cozy on the ski slopes or bundling up under a desert night sky," reports an analyst at TheFrisky.com.
Girls who are headed to a casual affair and want to spice up a plain semi-formal dress may want to think about showing one of these off. The look can turn a Little Black Dress into a memorable ensemble in two seconds flat.
Also, these pieces carry with them exotic images.
"These knits suggest the wearer has traveled to Iceland, Peru, Scotland, and the southwestern United States, so it's a trend we can appreciate while we navigate urban landscapes and cookie-cutter suburbia," according to an analyst at the news source.
Snooki knows how to wear a formal dress
30 October 2010
Nicole Polizzi, best known as "Snooki" from the Jersey Shore, may be pint-sized, but it looks as though the girl has sky-high fashion knowledge. In fact, a style expert from the Huffington Post believes that when it comes to stocking her wardrobe, the poofy-haired reality star is a whiz.
According to the news outlet, the first fashion point Snooki slam dunks is showing off shoes that elevate her frame and elongate her curvaceous figure.
"Her very high heels not only make her rear-end more attractive but add height to her four-foot-nine-inch frame," an expert from the news source advised.
The news outlet also points to other details of her clothes - animal prints, sparkly party dresses and sexy, high-cut boots. Tally all of those up and what you've got it one hot-looking babe.
"On an individual basis, her choices are always on trend and consistent with the advice we get from our gurus of appearance," reports an analyst from the news source.
A wedding dress with a simple bodice - avoid it if you can!
30 October 2010
Women who are about to enter marital bliss and aren't much of a flashy kind of girl may be looking at simple wedding dresses at the moment. However, ladies who prefer comfort over craziness may want to tread carefully.
As Glamour.com pointed out, choosing a wedding dress with a simple and plain bodice has its downside - when a bride is photographed from the waist-up at her affair, she might lose her bridal appearance.
"All that'll show is the top, and if it's too simple, you may look like you're wearing a basic tank or tube top in every shot," an analyst from the news source advised.
Girls who aren't into frilly and fancy designs may want to spruce up their look with some bold jewelry. Also, never underestimate the power of a headpiece.
"Looking special in wedding photos is important to every bride I've known, and trust this wedding gown consultant: You'll look almost like you do in everyday life if your gown's plain on top and there's no veil to speak of," the expert advised.
Frieda Pinto looks marvelous in a seafoam green dress
30 October 2010
Is Frieda Pinto trying to become the "it" girl of 2011? By the looks of her red carpet ensembles recently, we're inclined to believe she is!
Pinto, who recently dazzled in a striking Indian-inspired fuchsia formal dress at a premiere for her latest film, Miral, recently hit another one out of the ballpark. The star of Slumdog Millionaire strutted her stuff in a gorgeous seafoam green semi-formal dress that was elegant and flashy, all at once.
It looks like the fashion experts at New York Magazine were enamored with her ensemble as well.
"The sea-foam green color and fish-tail-style skirt is very 'Under the Sea, no?" a writer at the news source inquired. "And the sparkly top of the dress, which matches her shoes, even looks a bit like fish scales, in a glistening-in-the-ocean-depths kind of way."
Women who are preparing for prom may want to consider this color when scouring through formal dresses. While most young ladies will show up to the event in obvious colors, seafoam green says "look at me!"
Navy and brown dresses are beautiful
30 October 2010
While navy is a go-to color for many ladies, women are often hesitant about what other hue to pair it with. Pastels, such as pink and sky blue, are always great options.
However, Derek Lam, fashion designer and clothing whiz, has another notion - brown. While this pairing may seem somewhat somber, the clothing artiste insists it's simply lovely.
"I love navy blue and brown together. I think it's a very chic color combination," he told the news outlet. "It's one of those season-less colors and it works if you have some great navy blue pieces in your wardrobe, whether it's a sweater or a pair of pants or a great pea coat. It kind of works all year round."
Girls who are thinking about combining these colors in their next ensemble have endless options at their disposal. A beautiful navy dress can be worn with adorable kitten heels and paired with a brown clutch for some oomph.
Also, girls shouldn't shy away from brown jewelry. Wooden earrings and bracelets can turn a plain-Jane dress into an ethereal ensemble.
'70's-inspired semi-formal dresses are here to stay
30 October 2010
Considering fashion from the '50s and designs from the '60s have been slowly creeping into modern women's wardrobes, it should be no surprise that the '70s is following suit. The far-out decade, which revered for its influx of hippies and peace signs, provided some of the most memorable fashion in history.
According to Boston.com, the looks from this time period recently made waves on the catwalk .
"A new 1970s-style fashion muse, who means business during the day but can disco the night away, dominated the recent runway trends in the world's fashion capitals," the news source reports.
Girls hoping to embody this trend with their next formal dress have plenty of options. They can choose miniskirts with floral patterns and bold, bright colors.
It looks as though there are plenty of eye-catching designs to look forward to come spring.
"With the looser silhouettes, white and tropical-hue colors, and a relaxed vibe, designers were showing both an optimistic attitude and a willingness to invest in design instead of gimmicks," the news source reports.
Kristen Stewart talks about Bella's wedding dress
29 October 2010
While a plethora of wedding dresses have made headlines recently, from Crystal Bowersox's organic, beaded number to Katy Petty's Indian attire, there is one gown in particular that women across the country are buzzing about - Bella Swan's ensemble!
Breaking Dawn, the latest installment in the Twilight saga, is set to begin filming soon, and will feature Bella and Edward's much-anticipated nuptials.
While she has yet to try on the wedding dress, Kristen Stewart, who portrays Bella, shared some of her own insight about the fantasy wedding with InStyle magazine.
"Bella would definitely want something classic and simple in white or cream," she told the news source. Stewart also revealed that Twilight author Stephanie Meyer is completely in control of the gown's design.
However, we wonder if the dress' simplicity is meant to reflect Bella's underlying ambivalence toward the ceremony.
"She doesn't want to get married, but Edward has such different sensibilities and values, so she's going to give him everything [he wants]," Stewart told the publication. "...Usually it's the opposite, usually the girl wants it more. I think it's cute."
Designer Emilie Odeile adores comfy clothing
29 October 2010
Emilie Odeile may love fashion, but that doesn't mean the woman goes all out with her formal wear. In fact, the designer just spoke with Lucky Magazine and admitted she prefers to stick to comfier clothing.
"I never wear anything frilly, nothing flashy," she told the news outlet.
Girls who believe sporting a semi-formal dress means having to get all dolled up may want to listen to these words. Putting on a dress doesn't mean feeling irritated all night long.
Those who prefer to stick to casual clothing but still want to look stylish at their next school dance have plenty of options. Semi-formal dresses created from less constricting materials, such as cotton, can be easy to move around in.
Also, shoes don't need to be sky high. Ballet flats and kitten heels will look lovely with a toned-down semi-formal dress, and will also allow ladies to hit the dance floor without sore feet.
Take it from Odeile - one's wardrobe doesn't need to be fancy to be fashionable.
"My clothes need to be easy enough to tame me from my morning yoga glass to my workspace and into my boutique without missing a beat," she told the news outlet.
Wear a tweed blazer over a semi-formal dress for a unique fall look
29 October 2010
If there's any material that is perfect for autumnal weather, it's tweed. The cozy fabric always seems to elicit images of crisp fall leaves and beautiful foliage.
Luckily for women at the moment, this marvelous material is back in. Girls should feel free to sport tweed coats over their semi-formal dresses to look like the most stylish women on the block.
"Done in both slimmer versions and modern plaids, these jackets - with their part-equestrian, part menswear appearance - feel timelessly chic and perfect for fall," Lucky Magazine reports.
Women who adore this fabric may even want to look for semi-formal dresses made entirely from tweed material. Complement it with a beautiful pair of cozy tights, some adorable pumps and cute clutch handbag and you'll be good to go.
In fact, there's one celebrity who took advantage of this fabric recently - Nicole Kidman! The actress was just spotted in a gorgeous green tweed semi-formal dress and looked simply stunning.
The power of peep-toe shoes
28 October 2010
There's no doubt that shoes have a mysterious appeal for fashionistas. More often than not, the right footwear can make or break a look.
In fact, the Los Angeles Times recently spoke with a number style experts, all of whom agreed that what goes on our tootsies is just as important as our clothes.
"There seems to be a lot of circumstantial evidence that people think of feet as a smaller version of the body," Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, told the news outlet.
Girls currently searching for the picture-perfect semi-formal dress for their next big dance may want to keep this little tip in mind. Just because you've bought your gown doesn't mean you should forget about your footwear.
And, ladies may want to search especially for one certain style - peep toe booties.
"We're seeing a lot of winter boots with an open toe and towering high heels," Steele told the news outlet. "There is a definite combination of sex and status. These boots have a look of power."
The long skirt trend is reemerging
28 October 2010
Women often think that less is more when it comes to looking sexy. However, girls should know that you can look super-sensual without sporting an itty-bitty cocktail dress.
According to StyleList.com, long skirts are back in style, and the "schoolmarm look" can be shown off loud and proud.
"The long skirt trend is re-emerging because designers realized that not all women can or should dress like Beyoncé in micro-mini, shimmering tight dresses," George Kotsiopoulos, co-host of E!'s Fashion Police with Joan Rivers, told the news source.
While women currently searching for a super sizzling semi-formal dress may believe they need to sport a teeny-weeny number, girls should also remember that long dresses that fall to the floor can be just as attractive.
And, as seen with '50s-inspired ensembles that are making waves at the moment, retro-styles are hot-hot-hot.
"The natural cycle of fashion is to cycle back around the other direction. What we end up with is a more pure form of femininity," industry analyst Gregg Andrews told the news outlet.
Blend somber and feminine moods with a few key pieces
28 October 2010
Winter can be a drab time of year, which means our clothing will eventually mimic our moods. Of course, a girl can look somber while still seeming stylish.
According to Lucky Magazine, blending these two ideals together can be quite easy. Women just have to look around for semi-formal dresses that feature a few important details.
To begin, ladies should consider purchasing dresses in silver or gold fabrics. "Metallic gives girly ruffles a cooler edge," the news source reports.
Girls who are headed to an important school dance may want to search for pieces made from these materials. Also, dark, brown shoes should be paired with the ensemble.
"Chocolate feels softer than basic black," according to an expert at the news outlet.
As with all styles, girls looking to make an impression at the next affair they attend should remember to search early. The early bird catches the worm (or the most fabulous dress)!
The French tomboy look is so-so chic
28 October 2010
The French seem to work fashion so flawlessly - from beautiful berets to gorgeous mini semi-formal dresses, those ladies seem to be born with a sense of style.
Francophiles who are hoping to embody a bit of that je-ne-sais-quoi may want to consider sporting the latest fashion craze - the French Tomboy look. According to Lucky Magazine, this is a great way for girls to appear like a European while sticking to their American roots.
"The French Tomboy look mixes streetwise and androgynous pieces with a dose of Gallic flair," according to the news outlet.
Ladies who want to give this style a whirl should consider pairing key pieces over a muted semi-formal dress. For example, the news source advises that a leather belt is "a key accessory for masculine-feminine style," adding that "it wouldn't feel European if it didn't include a scarf."
Girls should also stick with muted accessories, such as a black watch or even a striking hat.
"A fedora is such a sharp way to finish off the look," according to the news outlet.
Ex-Bachelor contestants pick out wedding dresses together
27 October 2010
While shopping for your wedding dress is a special experience that you are sure to remember forever, it can also be extremely overwhelming, as making a decision about which gown to wear can seem quite daunting! However, two reality show brides-to-be are relying on one another as they hunt for their ideal wedding day ensembles.
DeAnna Pappas and Holly Durst of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are currently engaged to twin brothers, Stephen and Michael Stagliano. Interestingly, Michael competed on a season of The Bachelorette as well. Pappas and Durst became friends through the series' and brought Entertainment Tonight with them as they searched for wedding dresses.
"I've never tried on a wedding dress in my entire life so I can't wait to just put the first one on... I'm hoping that it's the whole beginner's luck [thing] and the first one I put on, I fall in love with," Durst told the news source.
It seemed that Pappas, however, had more foresight as to what she would be wearing on her walk down the aisle.
"I'm going mermaid," DeAnna tells ET of her bridal style, while Holly says, "I'm going more of like a Cinderella dress, ball gown, [style]."
How to successfully avoid matching bridesmaid dresses
27 October 2010
Traditionally, brides pick out one gown for their bridesmaids, and the ladies walk down the aisle wearing the same number. However, gals preparing to exchange vows shouldn't feel forced to put their best friends in matching bridesmaid dresses, especially with the wealth of options available today.
While every bridesmaid doesn't have to be outfitted in the same gown, women planning a wedding should remember that the bridal party must remain cohesive.
"If every girl wears a different dress (one in green satin, one in blue chiffon, another in black taffeta) then it just looks like a big ol' mess, in my opinion," writes an analyst on Glamour.com "The solution? Pick at least one element you want your bridesmaids dresses to have in common, then mix things up."
According to the news source, there are several ways brides can avoid matching bridesmaid dresses without creating a bridal party full of contrast and confliction.
Women can select gowns of the same color that boast different silhouettes, or conversely, pick bridesmaid dresses in different hues that have the same cut.
Additionally, bridesmaids can also wear gowns that feature similar accents, such as sashes or floral prints in different colors.
London fashion shows feature models with disabilities
27 October 2010
While certain shows at Fashion Week garnered attention earlier this month by featuring plus-size models, two fashion shows in London are now making headlines as the runways will be filled with models with disabilities.
StyleList.com reports that Fashion With Passion boasted a mix of women with and without disabilities, and featured collections of semi-formal dresses along with mobility aids.
Disabled & Sexy will also include disabled models as well, in order to bring awareness to spinal muscular atrophy.
"We want to show that people with even the most severe of disabilities can follow fashion, display individuality, and have sex appeal just as much as anybody else," according to the event's press release.
While it's yet to be seen whether these shows will have a larger effect on the design of formal dresses or the dynamic of the fashion industry, it's exciting to see women of all abilities being represented on the runway.
Ladies looking for formal dresses should remember to shop early to ensure that they find the perfect number well before the event arrives.
Diane Kruger accents semi-formal dress with neutral and complementary colors
27 October 2010
When accessorizing a semi-formal dress, women usually have one of three choices - they can wear accent colors that match their ensemble, sport items that complement their outfit or rock neutral-hued pieces. However, according to Diane Kruger's getup at Elle's 17th Annual Women in Hollywood tribute, ladies many not have to choose just one.
The Inglourious Basterds starlet stepped out in a crimson-colored number that boasted a simple silhouette, allowing the color to take center stage. While she wore nude sandals and carried a golden clutch, the star opted for makeup that contrasted with the dress - teal eyeshadow!
The cosmetics complemented Kruger's sparkling baby blues but also provided an unexpected burst of color that really made the dress' hue pop.
One may expect that a plethora of accent colors can create an overly busy ensemble, but a variety of tones can add interesting dimension to an outfit, and keep it from looking too conventional. Whether you opt to integrate color through shoes, jewels or makeup, blending colors can create a dynamic look.
Kate Hudson's black formal dress features unexpected accent
27 October 2010
Celebrities often take fashion risks. While some cross over into the extreme - think Bjork's infamous swan dress - others involve nothing more than wearing a formal dress that boasts a daring silhouette or an innovative material.
At the Elle Women in Hollywood gala, Kate Hudson stepped out in a gown that was definitely out of the ordinary. The black formal dress wrapped around the star in a classic manner, but featured an unexpected accent - a shoulder covered in white iridescent paillettes.
And while some women always rely on the help of designers and stylists to choose an item for a fancy occasion, it seems that Hudson depends on a different person's opinion - her 6-year-old son, Ryder.
"Oh my gosh, yeah. He's my biggest critic," Hudson told People magazine. "I always know when he likes it when he sees me and he doesn't say anything and he gets kind of flushed. I go, 'Oh-ho. That means you like it!'"
While we don't know whether Ryder helped Hudson pick out this black and white formal dress, we think that Hudson hit it out of the park - the gown featured the perfect blend of classic elegance and fresh modernity.
Lauren Conrad shares some thoughts about fall fashion
27 October 2010
Lauren Conrad has been an extremely busy girl lately. Conrad has designed a collection for Kohls and has published two novels, and now the former Hills star is returning to television in a reality series that will chronicle the launch of her new clothing line.
Given her nearly flawless track record of consistently dressing to the nines, it's no surprise that millions of young women around the world consider Conrad a style icon. Ladies who look to Lauren for inspiration may want to listen up, as the blonde beauty recently served as a guest editor for fashion website WhoWhatWear.com, and revealed a bit of insight into her fall style.
"I love the minimalist look. Wearing the same shade head-to-toe feels so chic to me," Conrad told the news source.
When picking out a formal dress, however, it seems that Conrad opts for an ensemble with a bit more embellishment.
"I really love any feminine detailing on a dress," Conrad added, referencing a cream wool one-shouldered number. "The bow on this one makes it sweet, but still chic."
New survey reveals most women prefer nude-colored undergarments
27 October 2010
While women often spend a great deal of time deciding what color formal dress to wear to an upcoming event, it seems that some ladies put just as much thought into the hue of their undergarments.
According to StyleList.com, a new survey by laundry experts Dr. Beckmann found that 72 percent of women prefer nude or flesh-toned underwear.
"A nude or flesh-colored bra denotes a personality that is natural, easy-going, down-to-earth and transparent," psychologist Donna Dawson said in a statement. "This woman is relaxed, with nothing to hide."
However, nude underwear also boasts practical benefits. While some women may think that white lingerie is the best choice to don under a white-colored formal dress, ladies should actually opt for nude pieces - flesh-toned undergarments blend with skin color, making the lingerie almost impossible to detect beneath the gown.
When shopping for a fancy ensemble, women may want to shop for new lingerie to wear underneath the new dress - a complicated silhouette or clingy fabric may make specialized undergarments a necessity!
Disposable footwear all the rage in Germany
27 October 2010
It's a common sight to see - gals leaving a party on a Saturday night wearing formal dresses, holding their purses in one hand and their shoes in the other. Unfortunately, this typically leaves most females flagging down cabs in bare feet, or dirtying the soles of their stockings.
While women in the United States may have to wait for a solution to this high-heeled hindrance, it seems that Europe has already solved the problem. According to Time magazine, multiple nightclubs in Germany are equipped with vending machines that dispense disposable ballet flats, for a mere $10 a pair.
And before you think that these shoes are the equivalent to the foam thong sandals distributed after you get your pedicures, this again. These slippers are available in black, gold, silver and purple and you can coordinate the comfortable footwear with your formal dress, enabling you to remain looking great as you exit the event.
If you're worried about your feet's well-being when preparing for a big night out - and disposable shoes will not be at your convenience - pair your gown with comfortable kitten heels or metallic flats, and get ready to dance the night away!
Maggie Q looks stunning in a multi-dimensional semi-formal dress
27 October 2010
It can be tricky to find a semi-formal dress that is equal parts sexy, fancy and fashion-forward - typically one quality tips the scales and the dress ends up being too revealing, too buttoned-up or too daring. However, one starlet recently wore an ensemble that embraces all three elements perfectly.
Maggie Q, star of The CW's new series Nikita, stepped out at an event in New York wearing a simply stunning outfit. The actress rocked a short, knit dress that featured a lace-inspired pattern and balanced the racy number with a tailored blazer.
And, it seems we aren't the only ones who flipped for Maggie's NYC look.
"Maggie Q generated some serious heat in a sexy illusion lace design," analysts at InStyle.com wrote. "She topped the leg-baring mini with a masculine-inspired overcoat - even the hottest beauties get cold!"
A fitted jacket can add dimension to your ensemble, and it can also chicly tone down a too-sexy getup. And picking a semi-formal dress that boasts a quirky pattern is a great way from keeping a short piece from looking too plain.
Expert advice for buying plus-size wedding dresses
27 October 2010
Finding the perfect wedding dress can be tricky for any bride, but plus-size women may have a more difficult time locating their dream gown, as many "sample gowns" in stores are limited to smaller sizes.
However, tracking down a fabulous wedding dress doesn't have to be too much of a headache, especially with some expert advice from Randy Fenoli, star of TLC's new series Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss.
Ladies with a fuller figure may want to pay attention to silhouette and fabric when selecting their gown.
"When done in the right fabric, diagonal ruching is a great way to forgive a little tummy... I'm also loving corsets. They mold your body and can give you a great shape and be very pretty in back," Fenoli told StyleList.com. "Go with lighter fabrics: silk, silk organza, tulles. Heavier fabrics can be less forgiving."
Curvaceous brides should also remember that a veil can be a girl's best friend.
"A really pretty veil can make the arms almost disappear if it drapes nicely around the shoulder," he added.
Hottest trends in formal dresses from Paris Fashion Week
27 October 2010
Paris Fashion Week has come to a close, and while it is often hard to pick out some of the hottest fads from the seemingly endless parade of formal dresses, StyleList.com recently compiled a list of the biggest trends that appeared on the catwalks in the City of Lights.
"A handful of designers looked East for inspiration this season," the news source reports. A number of gowns featured flowing, belted kimono-like silhouettes and Asian-inspired floral prints.
Designers also seemed to be mad about buff hues. "This unstoppable trend, which has been around for a few seasons now, popped up again on several runways...manifesting itself in the form of pantsuits, trousers, fluid asymmetrical frocks and floor-sweeping gowns in both sheer and opaque fabrics."
However, those who prefer more colorful ensembles are in luck. The news outlet reports that black and white ensembles and dresses in bold hues like electric blues, oranges and purples are sure to be big in spring 2011.
Ladies looking for a gorgeous formal dress for a springtime affair should start shopping online now - processing and shipping times can vary, and ordering ahead of schedule will ensure that the gown is delivered in time for the big event!
How to transition a fall wardrobe into a winter one
26 October 2010
If there's one myth when it comes to looking stylish, it's this - winter weather means forgoing fashionable clothing. Believe it or not, girls can look just as trendy when the snow is falling as when it's 100 degrees outside.
In fact, Refnery29.com gave some advice on how to look like a million bucks while keeping nice and warm.
"Whether it's replacing a shrunken cardigan with a heavy cape, or swapping out those little socks for a pair of heavy tights, winter-izing your wardrobe shouldn't mean you have to wear your parka and boots until April," the news source reports.
Girls who have a few staple semi-formal dresses that they adore may also want to consider pairing them with an adorable and warm winter coat. Pieces that feature fur around the hood and sleeves are also in-trend at the moment.
Additionally, women should remember to do their best to work in fall pieces.
"Don't give up your leather jackets come winter. It's all about smart layering - a turtleneck, a sleeved dress, and a roomy leather jacket is a cool-weather version of the standard Model-Off-Duty look," the news outlet reports.
Katy Perry did not wear a latex wedding dress
26 October 2010
While the rumor mill was recently reporting that Katy Perry was planning on wearing a latex wedding dress at her marital affair, it looks like those reports were wrong. In fact, the California Gurls songstress, who just wed her honey of one year, Russell Brand, in a lavish Indian ceremony, was supposedly showing off quite the elegant creation.
"Reports suggest Perry planned to don a gown that mixed traditional Indian and American elements...and that she'd be wearing additional looks... during other parts of the six-day celebration," the news outlet reports," according to StyleList.com.
While latex wedding dresses may be best for brides about to get hitched in Las Vegas, girls hoping to spruce up their formal wear on their big day have plenty of options. In fact, one of the hottest trends of the moment is for ladies to don a white or cream creation that features a long, gorgeous black sash.
Whatever a bride decides, women should make sure to search early for their wedding day wear. You never know what styles or fabric will suddenly suit your fancy!
What men think of super-expensive shoes
26 October 2010
Almost every woman has a bit of a shoe fetish, and it's safe to say designer footwear can leave a girl drooling. Still, are creations that cost thousands of dollars really worth it?
The Frisky.com recently showed a bunch of men a pair of uber-expensive shoes ($6,000 to be exact!) and got their opinion on the matter. The elaborate pieces were yellow, bold and beautiful.
"I'm all for high heels but really?....If my wife bought these, I would have a hard time not laughing," Brian, 33, told the news source.
While women shouldn't base their fashion choices on men's opinions, these guys have a point. Girls looking for fancy footwear to pair with their formal dresses can easily do so without breaking the bank.
Also, another guy surveyed had an interesting point.
"You could either buy these shoes, or you could move to London for three months, travel to Belgium, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France and the Netherlands, and still be able to afford backstage passes to 30 Seconds to Mars. But do what you want," Kyle, 22, told the news outlet.
How to pick a hot semi-formal dress for Halloween
26 October 2010
Halloween is right around the corner, but for women who want to look fashionable instead of frightening, putting together an ensemble for the occasion may seem difficult.
Luckily, StyleList.com has some pointers on how to look stylish on the spookiest evening of the year. Their first recommendation? Stick with the holiday's signature hue.
"Orange may be the color of Halloween, but it's also set to be the color of spring 2011," the news source reports, adding that "it's also important safety-wise to wear an eye-catching color when you're escorting the kids around for trick-or-treating."
Girls who are taking their younger brothers, sisters or cousins around the neighborhood may want to think about showing off a sexy orange semi-formal dress. Pair it with a sultry pair of black tights and fit in with the festively dressed crowd.
Also, women might want to think about rocking one of the daring patterns of the season, including skull print.
"The subtlety of the print on this scarf make it wearable year-round. And the light orange color creates a nice tonal complement to [other garments]," the news source reports.
Frieda Pinto gets back to her roots with a gorgeous formal dress
26 October 2010
It's safe to say Frieda Pinto, undeniable beauty and star of Slumdog Millionaire, looks like a billion dollars every time she steps out on the red carpet. This couldn't have been more apparent than when the gorgeous India-native made an appearance at a premiere of her latest film, Miral, at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Film Festival in an unforgettable formal dress.
Pinto was snapped by shutterbugs in a creation that embodied both American and Indian ideals. The doe-eyed darling was sporting a strapless formal dress that featured a complex beaded bodice and a soft, flowy skirt. Her piece also featured oodles of rich, vibrant colors, calling attention to the bright hues often found in her home country.
In addition, Frieda was carrying a beautiful light pink sparkly clutch purse and was rocking a lovely pair of shimmery chandelier earrings. Her look was both traditional and modern, all at once.
Women looking through formal dresses at the moment may want to let themselves feel inspired by Frieda's choices and go for an exotic-looking dress. Complement it with a pair of modern shoes and fetching jewelry and you're bound to look like a superstar.
Throw a glittery top over a black formal dress to spruce up a winter look
25 October 2010
The winter can bring dreary weather, but that doesn't mean a girl's wardrobe has to suffer. In fact, it's possible to perk up an outfit or a semi-formal dress with a few key pieces.
According to Lucky Magazine, even the dullest ensembles can be spruced up with a smidgen of glitter. As with anything, the key is to get creative with your fashion.
"Layer any super-sparkly top over a plain black turtleneck. On a rotten day, it makes you smile, but you're still warm," wrote Jean Godfrey-June, beauty director for the news outlet.
And, you don't need a frilly top to look titillating. Girls may also want to search for vests, jackets or scarves created from metallic fabric. Also, a pair of pretty sparkly pumps will look lovely with an all-black cocktail dress.
"The glittery top thumbs its nose at the weather, and the rest of your outfit secretly blends into it," Godfrey-June wrote in the news outlet.
Wear your minidresses all year long
25 October 2010
Women who are pining for their favorite summer dress at the moment may want to cheer up. According to Lucky Magazine, sporting a lightweight ensemble during the chillier months is possible.
Lynette Pone McIntyre, senior marketing editor for the news outlet, explained that these pieces can be paired with a few key accessories in order to keep a fashionista nice and warm.
"I love lightweight minidresses all year round, and I make them work in the winter by combining them with wooly tights, my go-to rubber-soled Kenneth Cole boots, and a trench the same length as the dress - short enough to avoid getting splashed," she wrote in the news outlet.
Women don't need to have an ultra-big budget in order to make this look work for them. In fact, thick, toasty tights are easy to find and usually won't break the bank.
Also, girls may want to consider investing in a pair of rubber-soled boots this season. The fancy footwear may be fantastic for the April showers that spring brings.
How to look fabulous in leather boots
25 October 2010
Fall fashion gives women the chance to sport some of the best looks of the year. Still, there's one type of footwear which is synonymous with the season - boots.
Women may be wondering which styles look best with certain formal dresses, and thankfully Lucky Magazine, the bible for trendy women, has many of the answers. Jen Ford, the fashion director for the news provider, gave her two-cents on what's hot.
"With a flat knee-high leather boot, I love something flouncy, like a bell-shaped skirt," she wrote in the news outlet. "You have a bit of leeway with the length - anywhere from a few inches above the knee to below the knee can look great."
Women may want to think about this when choosing semi-formal dresses to wear for a night on the town or at a low-key affair. A semi-formal dress paired with this unforgettable type of footwear will turn heads all evening long.
Of course, girls who choose a boot with high heels may want to think about sporting a semi-formal dress that features a different cut.
"For a heeled knee-high boot, look for one that's slim through the shaft and pair it with a pencil skirt that hits below the knee so it covers the top few inches of the boot," according to Ford.
Michelle Williams wows crowds with an unforgettable semi-formal dress
21 October 2010
There's no doubt that Michelle Williams is talented - aside from earning endless accolades for her cinematic performances, the girl has the ability to grab hold of a moviegoer's attention from the moment she pops up on screen.
It looks as though the talented 30-year-old actress is a whiz when it comes to fashion as well. The blonde beauty, who is set to play Marilyn Monroe in an upcoming biopic, stepped out at the premiere of her new film, Blue Valentine, in a stunning scarlet dress.
The creation, which was stitched together from radiant red lace, allowed Williams to look sizzling while still seeming demure.
Michelle also took a chance and chose to rock a pair of gorgeous leopard-print ballet flats. Her choices reminded women that animal patterns can make any outfit pop.
Williams certainly has a long career ahead of her, so we can't wait to see what she sports at all her future events. In the end, Michelle always manages to look marvelous.
Wear a push-up bra for more of a voluptuous look
19 October 2010
Many women look for sexy cocktail dresses that showcase a particular feature - her bosom. Still, not every girl out there is blessed with curvy assets.
Before you break out the arm exercises while chanting 'I must, I must, I must increase my bust!' try to remember that there's a wonderful creation out there for smaller-chested women - push-up bras. According to TheFrisky.com, these undergarments are perfect for women looking to attain more cleavage.
"Today's push-up and padded bras are pretty, comfortable, and undetectable under clothes. Some will even increase your breast size by two cup sizes!" according to the news outlet.
Girls aspiring to appear more voluptuous in their next formal dress may want to look at the scores of padded bras online. During the process, women should always remember to keep their chin up.
"While there are some women who embrace their small busts, others prefer to have a little more up top. You don't need to go the surgical route for a fuller bosom," the news source reports.
A toast to Natalie Portman's formal dress
19 October 2010
It seems as though Natalie Portman has grown up in front of the public eye. The beautiful starlet, who currently stars as a graceful ballerina in the Darren Aronofsky drama Black Swan, has morphed from a bright-eyed pre-teen into a beautiful woman with a closet full of fantastic formal dresses.
Portman recently stepped out at the New York City Ballet Gala in a creation that reminded the world why she's an A-lister. The gorgeous brunette wore an off-the-shoulder, lightweight turquoise semi-formal dress that highlighted her wonderful body and god-given beauty.
Natalie complemented her ensemble just right with a pair of pretty peep-toe pumps and a crimson-colored clutch. And, while we can't help but gush about her choices, it seems we're not alone.
"The actress' trademark combination of high-fashion dresses, low heels, and minimal jewelry has been an algorithm for red carpet success, but it's really her confidence that makes it work - witness the fact that in jeans and a t-shirt, she looks just as fabulous," the Huffington Post reports.
Paula Zahn embodies "messy sexy" with a ruched semi-formal dress
21 October 2010
From bed head hairdos to wrinkled semi-formal dresses, it's safe to say the "messy sexy" look is in. Still, many women may be wondering how to work this style with their next semi-formal dress. Never fear - details of stars' outfits are here!
Paula Zahn, CNN reporter and esteemed journalist, recently embodied this idea with her red carpet look. The beautiful blonde stepped out at the 2010 National Designer Awards Gala in NYC in a gorgeous pink semi-formal dress that was both ruched and wrinkled. The piece allowed her to seem like she chose her outfit in an instant, though she probably fussed over her appearance all day long!
Zahn chose to complement her getup with a gorgeous pink bracelet and a pair of black ballet flats. Her extra accessories reminded the world that she was going for a luxurious (not lazy) ensemble.
Women who want to seem both messy and sexy at the same time may want to take a cue from Paula and go for creations that are ruched and wrinkled. Pop on a few elegant accessories and you'll be good to go!
Wear a casual dress while going antiquing
21 October 2010
If there's one great activity to partake in during the autumn, it's antiquing. The pastime allows people to head out in the crisp, jacket-worthy weather while enjoying the company of their very best friends.
As luck would have it, StyleList.com suggested some picture-perfect dresses for fashionistas to sport while they're window shopping around town.
"Hemlines always seem to rest in extremes - one day it's mini, the next it's maxi. This fall, we're excited to find the middle ground with body-con dresses," the news source reports.
Experts at the news provider also recommend that women stick to floral prints. Semi-formal dresses with patterns of beautiful blossoms can help take a winter outfit from drab to fab.
No matter what, analysts made sure to highlight the importance of picking out a creation that's neither long nor short in order to stay stylish and trendy.
"The mid-calf length allows you to spotlight cute boot-sock combos (a big trend for fall) and the side-ruching emphasizes the waistline," according to the news outlet.
Roxane Mesquida chats about formal dresses that give her a lift
21 October 2010
Roxane Mesquida, an up-and-coming French actress, may have sky-high aspirations, but the girl is super-petite. Still, the beautiful performer has a way of making herself look more statuesque in formal wear.
In fact, the lovely lady recently spoke with Lucky Magazine and admitted that she relies on shorter cocktail dresses in order to give her look a lift.
"I'm not very tall, so when I wear short things I look taller," she told the news outlet. "Like minidresses - your legs seem very long, so people assume you're tall."
Women who are also short in stature may want to take a cue from Mesquida and search for semi-formal dresses that come to their mid-thigh. Girls who don't want to show off too much skin can look for pieces that feature long, elegant sleeves.
And, ladies should never forget the power of high-heeled shoes. Throw on a pair of super tall pumps and watch as women wonder how you attained such height and men marvel at your beauty.
Best footwear to wear with your wedding dress
19 October 2010
Women about to get hitched often spend the months leading up to the event obsessing over their wedding dress. A bride's gown is often thought of as the most important facet of the affair.
Still, girls should never forget about one important detail of their ensemble - their shoes! While your footwear won't be as noticeable as your wedding gown, finding a comfortable-yet-trendy pair is extremely important.
Luckily, Glamour.com recently gave women headed to the altar some pointers on the best footwear out there. Their first suggestion? Ankle-strap sandals.
"The strap will keep your foot firmly in the heel, ensuring that your shoe won't fling across the dance floor as you bust a move," the news source reports.
Also, women about to become a Mrs may want to take a chance on a new trend - kitten heels. These beautiful babies give girls just the right amount of height without causing them to slip and fall.
"The shorter heel on these shoes is less painful than stilettos, and you are less likely to worry about twisting your ankle if you're not a total walk-in-high-heels-without-tripping pro," according to the news outlet.
Complementing neutral semi-formal dresses with bold, warm hues
19 October 2010
Fall has brought a change in colors in the fashion world, emphasizing neutral tones, such as beige and charcoal. The trend is already being embraced by celebrities, E! Online reports, but not all ensembles have to come off as bland and boring.
Reality star Kim Kardashian added flair to a beige outfit last week, for instance, with a bright orange tote in London. The reality star reminded women around the world that bold, spring-inspired accessories can instantly turn an autumnal formal dress into an eye-catching look.
Girls yearning to sport a short dress in a neutral hue can also grab attention with a bangle bracelet or a chunky scarf in a warm color, such as red, yellow or orange. For the gal who prefers to accent an outfit with a shawl or light cardigan, pastel tones can add flavor to a dress in a neutral shade as well.
Girls should remember, however, that accessories can only top off a properly sized dress. To create a cohesive look, women are reminded to have their dress measured accurately for the perfect fit. Ordering a gown early can also give ladies more time to shop for accessories in tones that will best complement the hues of their ensemble.
New survey reveals that women own items of clothing in a variety of sizes
15 October 2010
While experts often preach about the importance of perfectly fitting clothes, the Daily Mail reports that a new study reveals that the average UK woman owns 12 pieces of clothing that are either too big or too small.
But some of these ill-fitting items can be attributed to yo-yo dieting, as researchers found that gals often keep three sizes of clothing in their closets to accommodate their fluctuating weights.
"At first glance it might seem like you only have a few items of clothes that don't fit, but when you start to think about the amount of clothes we have hung up in our wardrobes...it's a massive amount," Therese Coleman, consultant nutritionist for Wholegrain Goodness, told the news source. "It's a nice idea having a favorite pair of jeans or tops available for when you're that size again, but in reality these women are frittering away [a lot of money]."
Whether you're rocking a floor-length formal dress or a short number for homecoming, finding a dress that fits correctly is paramount. To ensure that your gown is a perfect match, shop online, where you can easily browse a multitude of dresses until you find the item that will fit you best.
Survey reveals more than half of consumers plan to spend Black Friday online
15 October 2010
Shopping season is about to kick into high gear as Black Friday, the notoriously busy day in the retail world that follows Thanksgiving, is quickly approaching. Traditionally, this is a time when consumers throw caution to the wind and seek out seasonal sales to score great deals on the hottest holiday gifts.
And while many individuals plan to brave the hustle and bustle of yuletide shopping, StyleList.com reports that a survey conducted by Accenture reveals that 53 percent of those polled plan to look online for Black Friday bargains.
Shoppers who are searching for fantastic deals on holiday purchases but don't have the time to head out to malls can log onto their computer and peruse online sales.
Gals who must track down some gorgeous formal dresses for various holiday parties should consider shopping online, as internet-based stores have no lines and will allow them to look at a variety of items with the click of a button.
Ladies looking for an end-of-the-year party dress may want to start shopping before Black Friday, as processing and shipping times can vary, and ordering early can help ensure the piece will arrive before the big event.
Gain inspiration from a few hot formal dresses at Paris Fashion Week
15 October 2010
While Paris Fashion Week has come to a close, fashionistas everywhere are still buzzing about the hottest looks that marched down the various runways, and some of these ensembles can provide great inspiration for ladies looking for formal dresses for upcoming events.
Bold colors were a staple of many collections, and Glamour.com reports that two gowns in particular - an ethereal crimson gown and a short lemon-hued number - stole the spotlight.
In addition to the bright palette, these formal dresses also showed a bit of skin in unexpected ways - one featured a high-neck but a daring cutout that exposed the model's décolletage and the other boasted an uneven hemline that was extremely short in the front yet draped dramatically in the back.
When wearing a gown in a bright hue that features a bold silhouette, remember to keep accessories simple. Wear nude heels and simple (if any) jewelry to complement the ornate formal dress - complicated accents could end up detracting from the gown, creating a busy mess.
Clinton Kelly from What Not To Wear talks fashion
14 October 2010
Ladies - if you're going to listen to someone for fashion advice, please let it be Clinton Kelly. The wonderful co-host of TLC's hit program What Not To Wear knows a good formal dress when he sees it.
Clinton took the time out to chat with TheFrisky.com and gave the very best style pointer we've heard in a long while - never stop trying to look fabulous.
"I think the worst thing a woman can do, in general…is to opt-out of fashion altogether because she feels fashion isn't meant for her. She's too old for it or she doesn't have the right body for it," he told the news outlet.
Ladies currently searching through formal dresses for homecoming or other school events may want to remember these wise words of wisdom while shopping. No matter what shape or size a girl may be, there is the perfect creation out there for her.
Kelly also explains that gals who choose to look frumpy or out-of-date may appear as though they have low self-esteem.
"When you say, 'I'm not worth dressing nice,' people pick up on that," he told the news outlet.
Big and bold items are hot for the fall
14 October 2010
Whether you love her or hate her, one thing is for certain - Rachel Zoe knows fashion. The pin-thin celebrity stylist, who currently stars on her own reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project, has dressed scores of Hollywood starlets, ranging from Cameron Diaz to Nicole Richie.
Luckily for budding fashionistas of the world, Zoe spoke with FabSugar.com and gave them some pointers on the hottest looks of the season. Surprisingly, her mantra for autumn seems to be the following - the bigger, the better.
"Pant legs are wider, sweaters are oversized, and heels are chunkier than ever," she told the news outlet.
Ladies who are currently sifting through formal dresses for homecoming or another school event shouldn't fret - this doesn't mean you need to buy a creation that's two sizes too big! Still, Zoe suggests that gals begin to embark on this trend with big and bold shoes.
"This is larger-than-life phenomenon can be embraced throughout your entire wardrobe, but since footwear plays such a key role in one's day-to-day look, I suggest starting there," she told the news outlet.
Finding semi-formal dresses to showcase a newly slim figure
13 October 2010
Whether they've dropped five pounds or 50, it's not surprising that many women want to flaunt their new figure after losing weight, but some gals may not know what to look for when selecting a semi-formal dress to showcase their newly sleek physique.
According to the girls at Glamour.com, there are several components to finding a number that complements a svelter silhouette.
"The best way to show off your trimmed-down frame? Cinch it at the narrowest part - your waist!" writes an analyst on the website. "A form-fitting dress... is the perfect way to show your shape without showing skin."
Toned women may also want to embrace black and sheer materials. The news source reports that while black is naturally slimming, sheer fabrics allow women to get used to showing off their new bod without going over-the-top.
Finally, a few smartly placed cutouts can draw attention to the parts of their body of which women are proudest. A small opening that shows a sliver of skin at the waist, back or shoulder can be an alluring accent that is perfect for women ready to flaunt their figure.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Candace Bushnell both work stunning formal dresses
13 October 2010
It's safe to say that Sarah Jessica Parker is known as a fashion icon - the beautiful woman played the style-obsessed writer, Carrie Bradshaw, on HBO's hit show Sexy & the City for six seasons.
Still, many forget that Parker's character was based on a real living woman - Candace Bushnell. Luckily for clothing hounds, both the stunning starlet and the celebrated author stepped out on the red carpet this week in two fantastic but very different creations.
Let's start with Parker's getup, shall we? Mrs Matthew Broderick sported a gorgeous gold formal dress that featured soft, glittery material. The piece allowed the woman to show off her super-toned bod.
Bushnell, however, went with a flirty and feminine number. The beloved writer was spotted in a strapless violet formal gown that featured a sweetheart neckline and oodles of pretty pastel flowers.
It's safe to say these two special ladies know how to pick out fantastic ensembles for their nights out on the town. Take a cue from either one and begin your homecoming shopping now.
Christina Hendricks talks about her infamous Golden Globe formal dress
13 October 2010
Who could ever forget Christina Hendricks' fabulous formal gown that she wore to the Golden Globes this year? The piece, which was a peach strapless creation that featured unforgettable ruffled detail, allowed the woman to showcase her bodacious, beautiful bod.
The voluptuous Mad Men actress recently spoke with The Huffington Post about how much she adored her red carpet ensemble.
"I thought that dress was stunning. I stand by that dress to this day. I had just gotten back from my honeymoon, and I felt beautiful in those pictures. I was smiling and beaming, and I felt like a goddess," she told the news outlet.
However, it seems as though Hendricks left one person less-than-thrilled. As it turns out, New York Times' Cathy Horyn complained that her piece wasn't appropriate for her full figure.
Still, it's nice to see that Christina is remaining positive in the face of such criticism.
"Let me go to a party and wear my pretty dress!" she told the news outlet.
Bring the faux-fur look to your wedding dress (really!)
13 October 2010
If you're getting hitched in the fall and you don't have your wedding dress just yet, chances are that you're going crazy at the moment. Never fear - your indecision may have worked out for your benefit.
In fact, ABC News took a moment to report on some of the hottest wedding dress trends, and one of them is a doozy - faux fur.
Yes, you heard that right! In fact, it seems as though pieces made from luscious white feathers and soft, alabaster fabric are the go-trend of the moment. The news source reports that these embellishments "could make a great shrug to keep the bride warm for an outdoor ceremony so she doesn't have to cover her dress with a coat."
Women who have yet to say yes to a dress may want to think about incorporating this trend into their wedding day look. Girls could also keep a white, faux-fur purse by their side at the reception. And, as it turns out, these pieces may also be a wise investment.
"Fashion-forward brides can wear the shrug after the wedding," the news source reports, advising girls to "pair it with jeans or boots."
Capes may be the perfect winter cover-up for short dresses
12 October 2010
Shawls and cardigans are ideal accent pieces for winter ensembles, but this season, capes are becoming a growing trend. Similar to shawls, capes can add an elegant touch to a formal dress, The Guardian reports. Thick material, such as cashmere, can also help a girl sporting a sexy semi-formal dress stay warm in cooler weather.
"It's about protection," fashion designer Stefano Pilati told the news source. "There is something very shield-like about the cape. Guard yourself against the onset of autumn nights and add one to your wardrobe."
Girls should look for a cape that best suits their style of dress. Those sporting a strapless formal gown may want a heavier, longer cover-up to keep them warm. Women who opt to wear a short dress for a casual outing can go with a short cape made out of a heavy material, such as wool, to accent the ensemble.
Women are advised to order their dress early to mix and match capes before narrowing it down to one. Adding a few accessories to an outfit can create the perfect ensemble, but having the extra time to decide on the right cape may help prevent a fashion disaster.
Complementing neutral semi-formal dresses with bold, warm hues
12 October 2010
Fall has brought colorful changes in the fashion world, emphasizing neutral tones, such as beige and charcoal. The trend is already being carried out by celebrities, People magazine reports, but not all ensembles have to come off as bland and boring.
Reality star Kim Kardashian recently added flair to a beige outfit with a bright orange tote in London. Bold, spring-inspired accessories can instantly turn an autumnal semi-formal dress into an eye-catching look.
Girls looking to sport a short dress in a neutral hue can grab attention with a bangle bracelet or a chunky scarf in a warm color, such as red, yellow or orange. For the gal who prefers to accent an outfit with a shawl or light cardigan, pastel tones can add flavor to a neutral-colored number as well.
Girls should remember, however, that accessories can only top off a properly sized dress. Ordering a dress early can also give girls more time to shop for accessories in tones that will best complement the hues of their ensemble.
Heidi Klum kills it in an unforgettable semi-formal dress
11 October 2010
Is Heidi Klum trying to solidify her status as a fashion icon in Hollywood? Considering the flawless getup she was showing off last week, all signs point to yes.
The main squeeze of Seal was spotted in a black and white cocktail dress that encompassed a number of fashion ideals with very little fabric. To start, Klum was rocking in a mini creation that showed off her long, luscious legs while keeping most of her upper body covered.
However, it's safe to say that when Heidi turned around, the world let out a collective sigh. Klum's dress featured an incredibly sexy open back, reminding the everyone that yes, she is a supermodel, and her title is deserved.
Finally, Heidi was spotted in an especially daring pair of deep blue pumps. While her footwear didn't match her outfit, they made her getup pop.
The question remains - how does the busy working mom of four do it? Congrats to Klum for pulling off her sexy style so well.
Eva Mendes shows off a gorgeous pink and gold formal dress
11 October 2010
There's no denying Eva Mendes is as striking as she is talented - the lovely Latina has a gorgeous body, beautiful hair and a flawless complexion. Still, it's her fashion choices that, in our opinion, solidify her place in the Starlet Hall of Fame.
Mendes recently gave the world another peek at her positively radiant wardrobe when she stepped out at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Opening Night Gala. The Ghost Rider actress was showing off some skin in a pretty pink formal dress that featured a plunging neckline and was made from a soft, gorgeous material.
And while pastels seeming to be running the gamut at the moment, Eva's dress featured something unique and eye-catching - a smidgen of gold! The A-lister was also sporting a beautiful gold bracelet and toting around a gorgeous gold clutch, proving to the world that her style sense is right-on.
Women looking through formal dresses for homecoming may want to let Mendes inspire their choices and go for pink and gold creations. When it comes down to it, Eva's dress will be etched in our minds forever.
Women should pair pearls with their wedding dress
11 October 2010
You don't need to watch an episode of Mad Men to get the '50s fever. From large, hoop skirts to mod-inspired formal dresses, the looks from the decade are hot-hot-hot.
Now, it appears as though brides can wear retro pieces on their wedding day as well. According to the Belleville News-Democrat, pearls are the latest accessory trend for brides. The news source spoke with Janice Krneta, a longtime wedding consultant, to get her two-cents on the matter.
"There are some that are white, but I also saw hot pink pearls. They almost look like they're the size of golf balls," she told the news source. Krneta also added that these beautiful baubles are being implemented into bridal hair accessories, such as an elegant clip or comb.
Also, the vintage look can extend to a women's wedding dress cut and style, as Krneta points out that tea-length dresses and cap sleeves are making a huge comeback. Of course, whatever a bride decides, the key to looking fabulous is to begin a search early.
Enhancing simple semi-formal dresses with jewelry
12 October 2010
Even the most bland dress can be turned into a stunning ensemble with a few flashy gems. As luck would have it, bold jewelry is making a comeback, according to Elle magazine, and girls are transforming everything from a simple cocktail dress to a bland formal dress into eye-catching outfits.
The Daily News Journal says that women shouldn't be afraid to add a little bling to complete an ensemble. While authentic stud earrings can add the perfect finishing touch to a semi-formal dress, fun bangle bracelets and colorful rings are appropriate for any casual occasion.
Long, dangling necklaces can also complement a dress with a plunging neck line. Necklaces with gem pendants can not only grab attention, but add flair to simple ensembles, such as a little black dress. A long string of pearls can easily pull an outfit together as well and add a fancy touch.
Of course, having a dress fitted properly before seeking out accessories is the key to creating a cohesive look. Women putting together an outfit for an event at a later date are encouraged to order their dresses early. This can give gals more time to seek out the perfect shoes, handbags and jewelry to top off the dress.
Shopping for a new, trendy winter coat
12 October 2010
An eye-popping dress may make a statement once a girl arrives to a party, but a coat can leave a lasting first impression. Bloomingdale's stylist Ellen Moffett tells App.com that women should think twice this winter before choosing to reuse a jacket from last season.
"Your coat makes a statement about you," Moffett told the news website. "It's the first thing people see when you arrive and the last thing they see when you leave."
Colorful pea coats are in style this winter, most popularly seen in shades of olive, plum and teal. Though bulky, these wool coats are perfect for girls who want to sport a short dress and stay warm.
Trench coats are not as thick, but make up for warmth in length. Most coats this season reach knee level, giving gals enough coverage in semi-formal dresses during the winter months as well. Popular colors this season range from neutral tones, such as beige, to navy and red.
When shopping for a coat to top off a new dress, women should measure accordingly. A properly fitting dress can give the girl an idea regarding the type of coat to best complement her ensemble.
Top trends in denim
11 October 2010
Love it or hate it, denim is officially a fashion "do" at the moment. Women everywhere are sporting jean jackets with their semi-formal dresses and turning heads all evening long.
For those who are wondering which denim to indulge in, Refinery29.com has some pretty handy pointers on the hottest styles of the season.
For starters, paneled denim is pretty stylish at the moment. "Evolving from last season's slashes and cut-outs, this fall's paneling styles are giving off a sort of western-meets-modernist vibe," the news source reports.
Also, one strange fad is currently moving up the fashion ladder at the moment - graffiti print denim. While this sounds too over-the-top, experts insist it's all over the place.
"The '80s acid wash trend grew up and subsequently got super hot with artful graphic patterns we seriously cannot get enough of," the news source reports.
Women who are hoping to stay on top of the latest trends may want to invest in a denim jacket to pair with their semi-formal dress right now! Before you know it, the temperature will be dropping and heavier jackets will be vital.

Deep V-neck, floral pattern dresses make a splash on the Paris runway
08 October 2010
Recently, a number of designers debuted their 2011 spring-summer lines in Paris. Among the outfits modeled were plenty of bright-hued, floral semi-formal dresses, according to Broadway World. Fashionistas looking to get a head start and update their wardrobes can take a few tips from catwalk.
Short dresses were outnumbered by more long, formal dresses with splashes of bright colors and flower patterns. Open-back dresses appear to be making a comeback, which can make a statement when worn and sized properly. Ambitious girls looking to try out this type of ensemble are encouraged to take their measurements. A loose open-back dress can create an unwanted saggy and sloppy look.
Deep V-neck gowns are also back in style. A number of the spring-inspired dresses displayed on the catwalk were not only open-back, but revealing in the front as well. To get the perfect fit around the bustline, women are advised to choose their size carefully and correctly. These dresses can be worn in colder weather as well when accented with a fall or winter piece, such as a scarf.
Girls don't have to spend a fortune on designer names to get the hottest looks in the coming months. Shopping early and comparing prices ahead of time can help gals get the most bang for their buck.

Weddings are a time to get all dolled up, put on your best makeup and sport an unbelievable dress - even if you're not the bride!
Still, there has been some debate as to whether or not women can wear a black semi-formal dress to a marital affair. Luckily, Glamour.com did some research on the matter and got the inside scoop from experts around the country.
"In the past, wearing black was associated with mourning, therefore it was considered inappropriate to wear on the happiest day of someone else's life. But that school of thought is outdated," Jaclyn Fisher, a wedding consultant, told the news outlet.
This is fantastic news for women who keep this must-have piece in their wardrobe. Whether you usually wear dark colors or instead feel more comfortable in rich, vibrant hues, an LBD will hardly ever fail a woman.
It seems as though most of the garment gurus around the world agree.
"An LBD is versatile and figure-flattering. Plus, it can easily be dressed up or down depending on how formal the affair is," Jeannie Mai, celebrity stylist and makeup artist, told the news outlet.
Sporting warm colors in cooler months
11 October 2010
Just because the leaves are changing colors doesn't mean girls have to leave bold, tones behind. Autumn is the perfect time to wear a bright, eye-popping short dress before the winter begins, E! Online reports.
Warm colors were in abundance at the season two premiere of Glee, as a number of cast members arrived in richly colored semi-formal dresses. Actress Dianna Agron sported a soft yellow ensemble with black embroidery, showing that spring colors can be worn in any weather. Starlet Lea Michele showed up to the premiere in a turquoise floral-patterned dress, which added a touch of summer to her look as well.
Girls who favor cool shades over warm ones, such as blues and greens, can still rock them in the winter months. Look for brighter shades of cool colors, such as lavender as opposed to indigo, to create a chic look.
Women who are looking to put together the perfect outfit for a formal occasion should take measurements and order their dresses early. Planning ahead can give gals more time to put together a cohesive ensemble for the big event.
Pairing accessories with neutral semi-formal dresses
08 October 2010
Neutral colors appear to be a hot trend on Paris runways this fall. Semi-formal dresses in hues ranging from honey to beige can complement all skin tones and create a bold, autumnal look. Girls can still wear short dresses in colder weather when paired with the appropriate winter accessories, E online reports.
Actress Keira Knightley was seen at a Paris fashion show this week in a short beige dress, paired with a casual charcoal blazer. Neutral-toned dresses give girls the opportunity to top off their ensembleswith a cold weather accessory in a darker shade. Scarves, shawls and cardigans in bold, dark colors can balance out the bright, eye-popping hues of a dress.
To pull the ensemble together, women should look for a a chic pair of heels and a tote in colors close to the winter accessories they're wearing. Knightley topped off her charcoal blazer with a black heels and a matching handbag. Gals can use the starlet's outfit as inspiration when they're aiming to put together a cohesive chilly weather outfit of their own.
Accessorizing can make or break an ensemble. For this reason, girls are encouraged to shop early for their semi-formal dress of choice. This allows more time to mix and match shoes, scarves and other additional pieces of clothing prior to a planned event.
Accenting a dress with winter boots
08 October 2010
While chic boots are a winter necessity for any fashion-forward girl, there are a few trends that will complement the short dresses and skirts that carry over from summer. Knee-high, thigh-high and fur boots are making a comeback this season, according to The National Ledger.
Fashion expert Veronica Valter from MillionLooks.com says that you don't need the real deal to sport a trendy pair of fur boots.
"I do believe that both natural and artificial fur looks chic and beautiful," Valter told the Ledger. "And there is no chance I would deny the fact it's very warm that means it's perfect for winter."
Neutral-toned boots can balance out the bright hues of a dress carried over from the spring season. Boots that rise to the knee or higher are eye-catching, but also help keep a girl's legs warm while she's on the go in cold weather.
Women who prefer shorter ankle boots can still wear them with short dresses - just make sure to sport a pair of tights or leg warmers as well.
Before shopping for the perfect boots to top off an ensemble, women are encouraged to take measurements and order their dress early. Purchasing a dress in advance can give girls more time to mix and match boots to create the ideal outfit.
Kim and Khloe Kardashian step out in similar animal-print dresses
08 October 2010
Do we detect a smidgen of sibling rivalry over here? Just a week after Kim and Khloe Kardashian were spotted in the same semi-formal dress, the lovely ladies stepped out in Los Angeles in two very strikingly similar creations.
Kim, perhaps the most famous of the reality TV family, looked especially cheerful in a cheetah print cocktail dress. The piece, which fell to her upper thigh, was paired with a waist-cinching belt and beautiful black pumps.
And while the tallest Kardashian sister, Khloe, rocked a different pattern, we couldn't help but notice its likeness to her sibling's formal wear. Mrs Lamar Odom showed off a zebra-print cocktail dress that perfectly complemented her tall, mid-thigh boots.
Believe it or not, these two small-screen personalities were even wearing the same nail color! Both of the bosom buddies were sporting freshly painted black nails that even further made their animal prints pop. Meow!
Women who want to step out with their sisters in similar creations may want to take a cue from the Kardashian girls. Go wild with two different animal prints and watch gentlemen turn into beasts.
Things to keep in mind while shopping for bridesmaid dresses
08 October 2010
Let's face it - shopping for bridesmaid dresses can be a pain. But while many women headed to the altar want to concentrate on their own wedding gown, uncovering the picture-perfect ensemble for your best friends is often just as important.
Glamour.com recently gave some pointers on how to make the process go a little easier. Their first suggestion? Know what you want beforehand.
"If you make your friends try on every short dress, every long dress, and every length in between, well ... let's just say they might not be your friends after a few hours," the news source reports.
One way to tackle this problem is to search for options online. This way, women can pore over scores of bridesmaid dresses from the comfort of their very own home.
Also, ladies should remember that at the end of the day, they won't be able to please everyone. Still, brides should try to put their bridesmaids' well-being over style.
"You won't be able to cater to all your friends' whims, but do your best to ensure they'll be comfortable at your wedding," the news source advised.
Sprucing up old dresses with belts, boots for fall
07 October 2010
Fall weather shouldn't deter girls from wearing their favorite short semi-formal dress. With a pair of leggings or high boots, women can still keep warm and flaunt an older piece from their wardrobe.
Even loose, airy dresses can be turned into an outfit for the fall. A decorative belt can pull a casual dress together and create a more formal look. Gals can also accent a spring dress with a few chilly weather accessories, such as a scarf or chunky knit top, to put together a new autumn look.
One starlet who recently embraced these style tips was none other than Salma Hayek. The brunette bombshell stepped out at Paris Fashion Week wearing a belted skirt suit, complemented by thigh-high boots and a stunning knit hat.
Women can take a hint from Hayek and spruce up their outfit in a manner of minutes by wearing adding a decorative belt to their ensemble.
When creating the perfect fall outfit, gals should remember that fit is of the utmost importance. Taking measurements and ordering new dresses early can save a fashion disaster.
Jenna Dewan's laid-back approach to trendy fashion
07 October 2010
Many celebrities are on the forefront of fashion, quick to embrace the hottest trends and newest looks. And while these glamor gals often spend their time at fashion shows, it seems one starlet has a more laid-back approach to style, yet still manages to look great.
"I do follow [trends] but I'm lazy about it. I'm not the first one there buying," actress Jenna Dewan told People Magazine. "Most of the time, honestly it's like, 'oh I like that' and maybe I'll go and buy one, but I'm not like, 'oh this is the thing, I have to have this.'"
However, that doesn't mean that the brunette beauty isn't up-to-date on the hottest fall fashions.
"I'm obsessed with leopard and that's really in. I'm trying to find leopard shoes that are not leather. I'm searching for the right brand because I'm an animal activist," Dewan added. "I'm also really into military trends. I just got a really cute military jacket and military cargo skinny pants."
If you want to stay up-to-date on the latest trends but don't feel like spending hours searching in stores, shop online for animal-print semi-formal dresses and military-inspired numbers. You'll be able to quickly and easily acquire some fresh duds without having to leave your living room!
What a difference a hemline can make
07 October 2010
When selecting a semi-formal dress, women often pay attention to a plethora of components, including fit, color and fabric. And while ladies also take silhouette into account when making a decision about an ensemble, there may be one key attribute that can dramatically alter a look - hem length.
It seems that skirts are often funneled into two categories - short and long. However, there are a range of lengths that can determine the look of an ensemble.
Jennifer Lopez and Hilary Duff recently stepped out on the town in the same semi-formal dress, and while this is usually a fashion flub, the gaffe wasn't too noticeable, as the starlets each showcased a different hem length.
While Duff opted for a more formal look, sporting a hem that fell below her knee, Lopez added a healthy amount of sex-appeal to her look by rocking one that grazed her thigh. Both ladies looked equally as lovely, but the skirt's length definitely played a major role in creating the ensemble's vibe.
Women should consider the occasion they are attending when shopping for a dress and select a hem that is appropriate for the event - a night on the town could warrant a mini-dress, while a long, formal dress may be better suited for a black-tie affair.
Dame Helen Mirren's formal dress inspires mothers-of-the-brides everywhere
07 October 2010
Helen Mirren may be close to royalty in the United Kingdom - the famous Brit was knighted a British Dame in 2003. While this custom may seem strange to gals living stateside, we can't help but bow down to the actress for her stunning fashion choices.
And, it looks as though women who are searching for the perfect mother-of-the-bride dress can use Mirren's clothing for inspiration. Helen recently stepped out in a ruby red semi-formal dress that was both refined and perfectly sexy for a bride's beaming mom.
And, it looks as though the fashion experts at Glamour.com agree.
"I'm loving the deep red color, the glitzy but toned-down accessories (especially the brooch or pin fastened at the belt of her dress) and I must say, this fits her to a tee," gushed an analyst at the news source.
While mothers of the bride have many dress options, it's often difficult for them to exude both their saucy and serious sides. Not so surprisingly, Helen's dress embodied both of these ideals.
"There's no chest exposure, the hemline is practically the dictionary definition of knee-length and it's fitted and flattering without looking inappropriately clingy," according to the news outlet.
Accessorizing to create a new autumn look
07 October 2010
In between expenses, such as tuition and textbooks, the average college student has little left over to spend on a new seasonal wardrobe. Young fashionistas can easily work with what they already have, however, to create an updated fall look, according to the Pioneer Times. With a little creativity, a short semi-formal dress or lace shirt can be pieced together into the perfect autumn outfit.
Fitted shirt dresses, which were originally a hit in the spring, can still be turned into a fall ensemble for casual outings. When paired with a light jacket or cardigan in a neutral tone, these short dresses can be worn anywhere from class to a night out on the town.
Girls looking to create a fall look for a special event can do so by purchasing a few autumn accessories to complement a summer dress. Items such as a decorative belt or scarf, can give an old outfit a new, revitalized look.
Recycling outfits can save money in the long run, but resizing is recommended, especially when planning to reuse a formal dress. Alterations should be made ahead of time to give girls the time to shop for the accent pieces they need to revolutionize an old ensemble.
Study finds men are more attracted to arms
01 October 2010
When looking for a sexy semi-formal dress, women may often look for a number that boasts a high hemline or a low-cut neck. However, according to new research published in the Journal of Evolutionary biology, women may want to rock a different silhouette - strapless.
The Daily Mail reports that the study, which was conducted by experts at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, found that long, shapely arms are considered more attractive than endless legs.
"Attractive bodies have a suite of traits in the right combination," said professor Robert Brooks, who led the study. "The dimensions can tell observers if that person is suitable as a potential mate, a long term partner or perhaps the threat they pose as a sexual competitor."
Ladies looking for a semi-formal dress that will be especially alluring to the opposite sex may want to consider rocking a strapless piece, which can beautifully showcase a woman's arms and shoulders.
However, strapless numbers can be tricky to wear, especially for bustier gals. Before stepping out in the dress, invest in perfectly fitting shapewear that will help keep you comfortable throughout the day - and night!
Choosing a wedding dress and cake style for the big day
06 October 2010
Selecting the perfect wedding cake can be tricky, but brides who have already found their dream wedding dress may have an advantage, as they can use their gowns as inspiration for their celebration's central confection.
Ladies who opt for more traditional, elegant wedding dresses can keep their cakes simple to complement their ensembles. Sticking with one neutral color for the cake and embellishing tiers with piped icing can bring out the details in the bride's dress and set the tone of the wedding.
Additionally, gals who want a more colorful confection can gain inspiration from the bridesmaid dresses as well. If the bridal party will be walking down the aisle in lilac-colored gowns, select a cake that is adorned with light purple flowers to create a harmonious decor.
Measuring properly and ordering a dress early can give brides more time to plan the rest of their wedding. As soon as the gown arrives, gals will be ready to take on the next wedding-related task!
Men enjoy the little black dress
06 October 2010
While many ladies may think that men pay no attention to their new dress or pair of stilettos, it seems that a surprisingly large number of guys have preferences as to what they like to see girls wear.
According to Glamour.com, the little black dress, a staple of most women's wardrobes, is favored by men - as long as it has a few alluring attributes.
"There's nothing sexier than a woman in a long black dress with a low-cut back and a slit from high up all the way down the leg," Ben, 32, told the news source. "Heels of course."
However, these numbers don't have to be limited to fancy occasions. Dark-hued semi-formal dresses can be worn by younger women to events, such as Homecoming, and more mature women can pair the piece with flats for a more casual look.
Gals of all ages should keep in mind that the most important part of choosing a little black dress may be finding the perfect fit. Low-cut backs and high slits may be appealing, but they are only eye-catching when worn properly. Wearing an item that is too large or small can be uncomfortable and distracting from the overall look.
Girls looking to buy a black formal dress for a special occasion are encouraged to start shopping early to allow ample time for decision-making and sizing.
Old hairstyles with modern twists becoming popular with brides
06 October 2010
New twists on old hairstyles are popular this season, and many of them can be used to accent the perfect wedding dress.
Brides-to-be who plan on wearing a dress with narrow straps can opt for loose buns to keep their hair in place, according to The Knot. Asking the hair stylist to roll more than one section into a bun will create an intricate and elegant look. By pulling their hair back, brides can draw attention to their wedding dresses.
Brides who don't have a strapless dress can sport flowing locks, the website notes. Adding accessories, such as clips or flowers, can also enhance a simple hairstyle.
However, including too many accessories can distract from a bride's overall look. To avoid taking attention away from the dress, brides can incorporate accessories in neutral tones.
It's important to book appointments with hair stylists well ahead of time and keep in mind that it may take hours at the salon to achieve the ideal look. Measuring accurately and ordering a wedding dress early may make coordinating your wedding-day look less stressful.
Top wedding dress trends of the decade
05 October 2010
It goes without saying that brides-to-be spend much of their days sifting through the hottest wedding dress trends. Still, many of the sexiest styles have their roots in earlier parts of the decade.
In fact, Brides.com recently pointed out some of the most in-vogue wedding dress fads of the past ten years. First up? Colored sashes, a trend that began in 2002 with a gown that featured a long and luxurious baby blue belt.
"The popularity of this look inspired brides to incorporate a bit of color into their gowns, and they embraced the endless possibilities of doing so - requests for blue (or pink or green) sashes came in from all directions" according to the news outlet.
Also, women can pinpoint the lace revival to eight years ago, when an haute couture designer reintroduced it to his collection.
"This dress helped brides realize that lace wasn't only for your grandmother's wedding dress," the news source reports.
Other trends mentioned were ruffles, pick-up skirts and the fit-and-flare look.
The return of pairing the kitten heel with a semi-formal dress
05 October 2010
There's no denying it - if there's one thing a girl adores, it's her super high-inch heels. This fancy footwear can help a woman go from small to statuesque in an instant.
Still, strutting around in these pieces often requires giving up one important thing - comfort. Luckily, the experts at BettyConfidential.com have offered women around the world another stylish and enticing way to look fabulous.
"Kitten heels are a great (pain-free) option. They're adorable. They're sexy. They can be worn with anything! We won't cry after wearing them for over eight hours," according to the news outlet.
Steeper than a ballet flat but not quite a stiletto, these shoes have the ability to make a woman feel sultry while gallivanting around town. The footwear can be paired with an elegant semi-formal dress for a casual evening out, or even matched with business-casual attire and shown off at work.
Of course, coming home without tears in one's eyes is always a bonus.
"We love being four to five inches taller in a stiletto. But at the end of the day, we sometimes cry from the pain," the news source reports.
Emma Watson named best-dressed female celebrity
01 October 2010
The Harry Potter kids are all grown up! Although we first met the talented bunch when they were children, it seems as though each of the stars is leading a fulfilling, successful life.
In fact, Emma Watson, the 20-year-old beauty who is perhaps best known as Hermione Granger, just garnered a very prestigious accolade - Best Dressed Brit. Bestowed the award by Glamour UK, the young actress has obviously made quite the impression on the public.

And in May, Watson showed up to the Costume Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York in a striking white creation. Her one-shoulder formal dress also featured a sweetheart neckline and a super-sexy slit.
Watson is so young and already so skilled at choosing striking formal dresses. We can't wait to take note of her public appearances for years to come.
Dancing with the Stars costume designer chats about the show's formal dresses
01 October 2010
If you're a fan of Dancing with the Stars, then you're aware that there's a certain facet to the show that takes people's breath away - the costumes! From scores of sequins to endlessly frilly fabric, the looks on a single episode can inspire a girl's formal dress decisions for years.
Luckily, StyleList.com spoke with the reality competition's main costume designer, Randall Christensen, for some inside scoop. As it turns out, his favorite creation was worn by The Brady Bunch alumni and 76-year-old vixen, Florence Henderson.
"What a sophisticated, glamorous - and yet sexy - look for our Queen Mom," Christensen told the news source. "Our inspiration came from various silhouettes of some of Hollywood's most famous and glamorous stars - Cyd Charisse and Audrey Hepburn."
Florence's piece was a beautiful black ball gown that featured a pair of gorgeous sheer sleeves. The piece also featured a surprisingly sexy feature - a slit!
"And when Florence struck that opening pose, slit skirt peeled open... Need I say more?" Christensen gushed to the news source.
Ask friends to help you pick a formal dress
01 October 2010
A lot can go into preparing for a formal event. From finding the perfect gown to tracking down ideal accessories to picking out the appropriate makeup, putting together an ensemble can be overwhelming.
But instead of trying to do everything by yourself, ask some friends to help you out. A bit of support may alleviate stress and help you to enjoy the process of getting ready for a big night out!
Even celebrities require assistance when preparing for a fancy event. When asked about her best trick for getting ready for the red carpet, actress Jordana Brewster celebrated the importance of teamwork.
"If it's an important event, a stylist takes the pressure out of finding the right dress and accessories," Brewster told InStyle magazine. "And professional hair and makeup artists have so many tricks for making you look good."
And while we may not all be lucky enough to afford professionals, a good group of girlfriends can do the trick.
When looking for your formal dress, shopping online will make getting second (and third, and fourth!) opinions easy as pie. Simply compile a list of links for gowns that you have your eye on and email the document to your gal pals.

Fashion blogger chats about shoe obsession
01 October 2010
Most women adore shoes, but how far would a girl go to get her daily fix? Believe it or not, some ladies are so smitten by style trends that they are willing to put it all on the line.
One woman who was so consumed with footwear and stunning formal dresses from early childhood is fashion blogger Jane Aldridge. The 18-year-old shoe junkie recently spoke with StyleLikeU.com and gave some scoop about her upbringing.
"I felt so repressed by public school, how, like, they tried to make every kid the same and if you didn't wear the same thing as everyone else then you had to go to a special class," she told the news outlet.
While ladies can certainly identify with Jane, girls should remember that homecoming and school dances really give people a chance to shine. Often, these are the ideal moments to sport an unforgettable formal dresses and shoes.
Still, Aldridge admits she may have taken her fancy footwear to another level when she was a student.
"I was sent to the office everyday for the shoes I wore," she told the news outlet.
From burnt to bright orange - bridesmaid dresses for spring 2011
01 October 2010
Is there any wonder why burnt orange is so majestically wonderful for the autumn? The hue is seen everywhere during the fall season, from the pumpkins that line people's windows to the crisp leaves that adorn the city streets.
Girls who adore this shade and are dreading saying goodbye to it should keep their chin up. As it turns out, one of the tone's close cousins is a pertinent color for the spring.
According to Refinery29.com, a louder, more vibrant version of the striking color may be the go-to shade when the flowers begin to bloom.
"Rich mango, persimmon, ripe pumpkin - however you slice it, bold orange was one of spring's sweetest color trends," the news source reports.
And, as it turns out, the hue may also become a bride's best friend. While bold orange may look a bit peculiar on one about to enter marital bliss, it might be simply gorgeous on a group of bridesmaids. Women who are about to get hitched may want to keep this organic color in mind while wedding planning.
Faux-fur embellishments are hot for the winter
01 October 2010
Whether you praise or pooh-pooh animal rights activists, one thing is for certain - faux-fur embellishments are always in-trend.
Luckily, women who are looking for a pick-me-up for a formal dress have many different options available to them. According to InStyle.com. Rocking faux fur additions - such as jackets, vests or even booties - can make all the difference.
Still, the news source recommends that women keep in mind that these creations are entirely man-made.
"Whether you dress your fuzzy new friends up or down, don't spoil your fun by pretending that they're real. These impostors are too sporty to be taken seriously," according to the news outlet.
Women who will be attending a homecoming dance and want to make a statement might want to consider sporting a foxy semi-formal dress that features just a small amount of fur. The look will scream Beverly Hills-chic while still being super-cool for school.
No matter what, ladies should remember to have fun.
"Consider it glamour with a wink," the news source added.
Wear a chunky knitted sweater over a semi-formal dress and be warm and toasty
01 October 2010
Can you feel the cold, crisp air out there? Autumn is here, and fashionable ladies are looking nothing short of fabulous. These few months provide women with the opportunity to sport loads of layers without covering up their adorable semi-formal dresses with a heavy jacket.
For girls that want to keep from losing feeling in their legs while heading out on the town, InStyle.com has some pretty nifty advice. The fashion mag recommends that women sport chunky, knitted sweaters over their skimpy formal dresses in order to stay snug as a bug.
"How can you not get all googly over sweaters that feel like a hug or, even better, instigate one. These made-to-look-handknitted styles have varied shapes and necklines, offering warmth insurance or snuggly sensuality," according to the news provider.
Women have lots of options when attempting to rock this trend. Girls can opt to wear a thick, knitted shawl over a strapless dress or even sport a button-down sweater that features a waist-hugging belt.
While the accessory should reflect each girl's own individual style, the news source points to one benefit of knitted overlays.
"Either way, you won't need a coat," they added.
How to find the perfect mother-of-the-bride dress
01 October 2010
Mothers have a lot on their plate when their children are in the midst of wedding planning, and one cause of stress is often tracking down the perfect mother-of-the-bride dress. But with a few tips, finding an appropriate wedding gown doesn't have to be too difficult.
"The most important rule of thumb for mothers is to follow the couple's cues about the style and tone of their nuptials," Tulsa World reported. "Before purchasing an ensemble for the big day, talk with the bride and groom about their vision for the wedding."
While white gowns are obviously off-limits, any other color is acceptable. However, moms may also want to wait until their daughter has selected her gown and the bridesmaid dresses, as the news source suggests that it can be useful to know what cuts and colors others will be wearing on the big day.
Additionally, the mother-of-the-bride dress shouldn't match the other dresses, but complement them. Women should select a color that flatters their skin tone but isn't too distracting.
"Your attire should never compete with or draw attention away from the person with the starring role in the production - the bride," the new provider added.
Nicole Richie stuns in an elaborate formal dress
01 October 2010
While some occasions call for a simple silhouette that possesses subtle elegance, other events may require a formal dress that is anything but uncomplicated. And it looks like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's latest gala was one of those nights.
Though she is often known for her laid-back, hippie-chick ensembles, Nicole Richie stepped out at the LACMA's opening of the The Unmasking exhibition rocking an avant-garde gown that truly made a statement.
The elaborate formal dress boasted a white and black lace bodice and a skirt made from layers of shimmering white and gray tulle. Most notable, however, were the sweeping black bows that draped across the former reality star's shoulder and collected at her hip.
Not surprisingly, the gown required no additional accessories, and Richie seemed to agree, wearing nothing more than a diamond cuff bracelet and black peep-toe pumps.
While an elaborate formal dress may not be appropriate for every nighttime affair, ladies shouldn't be afraid to rock a complicated ensemble every now and again. After all, wearing a number that is a piece of art can be fun!
What to wear to a black-tie wedding
01 October 2010
While many women may be used to dressing for friends' weddings, ladies may be less familiar with picking out formal dresses for black-tie events. But with a little bit of guidance, it doesn't have to difficult to find an ensemble.
"This is the occasion to wear a longer dress," TODAY style editor Bobbie Thomas writes on TODAYShow.com. But women should remember to avoid gowns that are too sheer or show too much skin, as the wedding is likely to include children and older relatives.
While most formal dresses boast floor-length hemlines, ladies who want to wear a shorter number should pay close attention to the gown's fabric.
"Heavier, more-structured materials look most polished," Thomas suggests. "Opt for luxe fabrics to add a formal touch...velvet, satin, brocade, embroidery, embellishments, overlays and intricate details...these rich textiles can elevate your look."
And while the invitation may read black-tie, Thomas reminds women that that doesn't mean that black is the only option.
"Navy, emerald green, ruby red, plums and purples look particularly regal," the style expert adds.
Helen Mirren offers up a few style secrets
01 October 2010
Is there any woman more elegant than Helen Mirren? The beautiful 65-year-old actress seems to always look flawless, whether she's accepting an Oscar for Best Actress or she's simply enjoying a holiday on the beach.
While we might not all be blessed with her genes, we may be able to steal a few of her secrets, as the British beauty recently shared some of her style tips with UK's Woman & Home magazine.
"Four-inch platforms give you great height and make your legs look unbelievably long," Mirren told the news source. "I used to only be able to get them in stripper shops, but now you can buy them everywhere - although, unfortunately, that means everyone else has discovered the trick too!"
However, it seems that even women who aren't wearing a formal dress and super-high heels can still emulate Mirren's effortlessly gorgeous appearance.
"Holding your tummy in is another trick for making you look and feel good," the Academy Award-winning actress added. "Being able to smile is a great short cut to confidence. It helps you have a good time."
Blue dresses are a great option for brides and bridesmaids alike
01 October 2010
While many women look to the Fashion Week runways to draw inspiration for their spring wardrobe, those getting ready to walk down the aisle can also steal a few stylish tips from the catwalks to create truly breathtaking bridal ensembles.
According to Glamour.com, New York Fashion Week featured a plethora of blue gowns, many of which would make excellent bridesmaid dresses. Not only will your bridal party look fantastic, but you won't have to worry about finding your "something blue" on your wedding day!
Cobalt bridesmaids dresses are elegant and glamorous, but the news source suggests using carefully selected accessories to keep the ensembles from looking too harsh. A gold-colored sash or heels can brighten up the intensity of a dark gown.
Brides can opt to wear blue ensembles as well, as ladies who are about to say "I do" can slip into a beautiful semi-formal dress after the ceremony. This is an especially great idea for those who are worried about ruining their white wedding dress while eating and dancing at the reception.
How to liven up an all-black ensemble
01 October 2010
It's no secret that women love the little black dress, and with fall underway, ladies everywhere are likely to start wearing the dark hue more often. However, too much black can appear severe and cold.
"I think a flat, black outfit not only does nothing to break up your style, but it also gives a little bit of a sad, boring quality to your look," My Body My Style host Sam Saboura told StyleList.com.
To keep from looking like a member of the Addams family, add a bit of color to your ensemble. But instead of embracing neon brights, industry experts suggest pairing a black semi-formal dress with richer shades.
"[Oxblood red, charcoal gray and hunter green] are the three colors you can incorporate into accessories, into knits, into your handbag, to soften the all-black look a little bit," Sam Saboura told the news source.
Those who want to keep their outfit monochromatic can break up the monotony by playing with texture.
"[Different textures] add lots of levels and dimension to an outfit," Saboura added. "You can bring in a lot of texture to an all-black outfit with a great pair of lace tights or textured tights in black."
Addressing concerns about strapless wedding dresses
01 October 2010
Wedding dresses are made in any silhouette imaginable, which can make the process of narrowing down the perfect cut more than a bit overwhelming. However, there is one style of gown that may be more difficult to pull off than others - a strapless silhouette.
According to UK's The Guardian, strapless wedding dresses can cause problems for almost all women - ladies who are flat-chested will spend the entirety of their night pulling at the gown, while gals with a larger chest can end up showing a bit too much skin.
However, the issues caused by a strapless number may not lie within the dress itself. "This is the real problem with the strapless dress - the bra factor," the news source reports. "In short, you cannot wear one - [they rarely] ever stay up."
If you are set on wearing a wedding dress with no straps, spend time shopping for the perfect shapewear, as a good bra may help boost your confidence on the big day.

Lea Michele wows in a simple dress perfect for one's wedding day
01 October 2010
Some wedding dresses can be overly complicated numbers - after all, they can feature almost every accent imaginable, from elaborate trains to intricate embellishments. And while many brides may think it is these extra adornments that make a gown special, a simple wedding dress may be the most striking choice possible.
At PETA's 30th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles, California, Lea Michele rocked a simple ivory gown that proved that less can be more. The floor-length number featured no embellishments or accents, except for two subtle seams that helped emphasize the dress' slight mermaid-style silhouette.
The sleek fabric seemed to glow, complementing Michele's gorgeous bronzed skin. Trust us, if we had a complexion like that, we wouldn't need additional accessories either!
Though the Glee starlet wasn't walking down the aisle, the number she wore would certainly suit any bride. Instead of selecting an elaborate gown that can be overwhelming, wear a simple wedding dress that will allow you - not your clothes - to be the star of the show.
Consider cut and color when selecting a sexy semi-formal dress
01 October 2010
Now that summer has ended, cooler temperatures may prevent women who usually show a bit of skin from rocking sultry semi-formal dresses. However, just because it may no longer be appropriate to wear an up-to-there hemline, it doesn't mean that it's impossible to look sexy.
Brunette beauty Eva Mendes turned up the heat at the Toronto launch of her Vida bedding collection, but the alluring actress did so without revealing much skin. Mendes wore a sleeveless geranium pink number that fell just below her knee and was cinched at the waist.
And it seems that it was this shrewd combination that led to this understatedly sexy look. "Bold color + feminine silhouette = instant bombshell," writes InStyle.com of Mendes' look.
Women who want to wow at their next event but don't want to expose too much skin should remember that a sexy ensemble is easy to put together - just select a semi-formal dress in a figure-flattering cut and an attention-grabbing color.
However, ladies looking for an outfit for an upcoming affair should start shopping early to ensure that the dress arrives well before the scheduled gathering. Thursday, April 14, 2011
