How to give your little black dress a pick-me-up
31 December 2010

When it comes to picking out something to wear for an important shindig, there's nothing more reliable than a little black dress. Still, how does a girl continually show off such a go-to item and still feel like she's making a statement?

StyleList.com had some tips on how to spruce up a standard semi-formal dress. First, the expert at the news outlet advises to wear a belt.

"Grosgrain ribbon is my favorite, as it adds so much to the dress and is also inexpensive to make. Go for colors like shocking pink and silver metallic, which will make your dress look different every time," she writes.

Of course, ladies who want to look fabulous still have have plenty of other options. The news source recommends making use of trendy gloves, a slip,rc or even an unforgettable hat.

In the end, the key is to make sure you're comfortable in what you choose to show off as you're saying goodbye to 2010. Start the New Year with a smile!

Say yes to a polka-dotted wedding dress
31 December 2010

Wedding dresses come in all sorts of cuts and styles, but brides who want to make a statement often turn to unique and unforgettable gowns for their super-special day. If you're one of these daring ladies, why not choose a polka-dotted wedding dress?

Glamour.com took the time to highlight three unique gowns with this attribute that were undeniably gorgeous.

Their first pick was a creation that was as girly as it was unique. The piece, which featured a sweetheart neckline and a black and white ribbon around the mid-section, featured small but stunning polka-dotted detailing.

Their next pick was a short, sexy number. The wedding dress fell above the knees and was fashioned with material draped over just one shoulder. Of course, it was complemented by scores of wonderful white orbs on the fabric.

The last gown was certainly one no bride could ever forget. The strapless piece was marked by a frilly bow around the waist and a plethora of terrific tulle.

Don't deny it - polka dots are pretty, aren't they?

Jenni "JWoww" Farley looks pretty in purple
29 December 2010

Fans of the hit MTV show Jersey Shore may be counting down the minutes until the premiere of the third season airs. Still, those who adore any bit of news of the show's cast members may get a kick out of hearing about Jenni "Jwoww" Farley's recent getup.

The beautiful brunette stepped out at an event in New York City in quite the pretty purple cocktail dress. The piece, which featured material draped across one shoulder, allowed the tough-as-nails woman to let the rest of her brown locks delicately cascade down the opposite side of her body.

Not so surprisingly, JWoww proved that she's genuine with her red carpet appearances. The reality star was wearing a bold black belt cinched around her waist and beautiful black pumps that were just perfect for her ensemble.

Finally, Jenni did things just right by placing a pretty amazing purple cocktail ring on her right hand. In the end, the New York-native proved that accessories can make all the difference.

Chloe Sevigny talks about her style
28 December 2010

There are scores of young starlets making an impression on the red carpet at the moment, but if there's any girl who goes down in history as a Hollywood trendsetter, it's Chloë Sevigny. The 36-year-old star of Big Love has been known as a style maven for at least a decade.

The hugely talented actress recently spoke with Playboy Magazine about how she attained her keen sense of style, giving readers around the world reason to actually pick up the publication for its articles.

"I'm glad I grew up during the last vestige of cool, in the 1990s, when everything wasn't blogged and on the Interwebs," she told the news outlet.

Chloë's undisputed fashion talents have remained with the girl even to this day. In fact, the gorgeous blonde stepped out at the costume gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a beautiful turquoise semi-formal dress that was stitched together from feminine lacy fabric.

However, it looks as though the girl wants to be noted more for her acting than wardrobe skills.

"I guess I am stylish, but I would rather have people come up and say 'I really liked your performance in this or that' than 'I really like the way you dress,'" she told the news outlet.

The ski bunny look is in

28 December 2010

It's reaching frigid temperatures in some parts of the country, but style aficionados haven't given up on looking fantastic. In fact, the New York Time reports that there's a notable trend becoming as trendy as it is cozy - ski wear.

The news source points to the masses of women who are layering long, heavy sweaters with faux-fur vests. The result is a fashion fad now known as "urban ski get-up."

"It's warmth mixed with style," Hilary Gallagher, a clerk at an upscale boutique in Manhattan, told the news outlet. "Instead of the old argyle sweater with ear muffs, it's a mixed look of the motorcycle boots with jeans, the reindeer sweaters, a fur vest and the fur hat."

Girls who want to wear their best semi-formal dress can certainly still indulge in this look. Ladies should just make sure to rock their finest winter boots and thick, opaque tights to cap off the ensemble.

Remember, just because the snow is falling outside doesn't mean a girl can't look incredible. Go crazy with what's in your closet and see what happens.

Daily Candy editor Crystal Meers talks about fashion
28 December 2010

Some ladies are born with the style gene, and others are not. It's safe to say Crystal Meers, senior editor for Daily Candy, knew how to dress like a pro from the moment she was able to walk and talk.

The adorable L.A. resident took the time to speak with Lucky Magazine about her own sense of style.

"It's like if the Royal Tenenbaums went 'glamping' in Bug Sur during the early '70s," she told the news source, referencing her own phrase for "glamorous camping."

Meers' clothing personality radiates through her photo shoot in the publication. The beautiful woman shows off a casual semi-formal dress that is cinched at the waist with an ethereal brown belt. She is also wearing an adorable pair of wedge sandals that are paired with a hippie girl staple - socks!

Of course, women who want to emulate Crystal's choices don't have to commit a fashion faux-pas in order to do so. Girls can wear a semi-formal dress in natural tones, such as brown and beige, and complement their look with muted accessories.

How to dress for a job interview
28 December 2010

Getting an interview for a job often means you're one step closer to landing the gig of your dreams. Of course, girls who want to make a huge impression on their future supervisor should do their best to dress for success.

According to Stephanie Trong, deputy editor of Lucky Magazine, ladies may want to think outside the box while still appearing work-appropriate.

"The standard black pump makes me feel like I'm a cardboard cutout of a job candidate, so I'd wear heels with subtle but interesting details," she said in the news source. "That way I can show some personality while still looking polished."

The news outlet also advises girls to embrace conservative ideals. In fact, Leslie Price, the online editor for the magazine, recommends showing off a sheath dress and pumps in order to appear put-together.

Girls who are preparing for an interview may want to plan their outfit before the big day. After all, you don't want to lose the job because you showed up late!

How to show off metallics and sequins
27 December 2010

Metallics and sequins can add a bit of a sparkle to a semi-formal dress, but how can they be worn without looking like a contestant on Dancing With the Stars? Whether a girl likes it or not, showing off these materials takes careful preparation.

StyleList.com spoke with stylist Sam Saboura to get some tips on how to work these two ideals like a pro. His first pointer is to mix textures as often as possible.

"I love the idea of mixing something sequined with something unexpected that's a contrast to it," he told the news outlet. "I wouldn't go to town mixing bright, sparkly, shiny with leather because it can look too '80s and a little bit tacky. Use toned-down, muted metallics."

Saboura also recommends pairing a faux-fur coat with a metallic semi-formal dress or even sporting a top with a smidgen of sequins during the day.

Of course, the fashion guru tells ladies not to overdo it. Sometimes the slightest bit of glimmer can help an outfit go the distance.

Vanessa Hudgens looks super-sexy in a bandage dress
27 December 2010

Vanessa Hudgens may be single at the moment - the Disney star just split with her boyfriend of five years, Zac Efron - but don't cry a river for the girl. In fact, the beautiful brunette just celebrated her 22nd birthday looking ready to paint the town red and mix and mingle with potential suitors.

Hudgens was photographed on the red carpet at Pure nightclub in Las Vegas showing off quite the teeny-weeny cocktail dress. Her piece, which was created from glittery material, was strapless, sensational and sexy.

Truth be told, it's safe to say the High School Musical actress was working a number of assets the world didn't even know she had. Her legs were smoking. Her backside was boomin.' Her arms? Toned and terrifically lovely.

With such great features and style sense, who needs Efron? Zac may be one of the most eligible bachelors in the universe, but it's safe to say Vanessa is very desirable as well.

Easily amplify your New Year's Eve sex-appeal
23 December 2010

New Year's Eve is almost here and many women want to look their best when the clock strikes midnight. Ladies trying to put together an especially alluring look are in luck - InStyle.com recently revealed a few tips to add instant sex-appeal to any look.

To start, select a semi-formal dress in an especially sultry fabric, such as sheer materials and lace. However, also consider the feel of the fabric. Plush materials, like crushed fabric, beg to be touched, leaving you looking utterly irresistible.

The news source suggests that you can also increase your allure by selecting an outfit that shows off a bit of lingerie. Rock a number that reveals the edge of a bra or camisole or slip on a pair of lacy stockings.

While the little black dress is a classic, women looking to stop traffic in their New Year's Eve getup may want to sport a red garment instead. For maximum sex-appeal, don't forget matching red lipstick.

"A hot red dress plus crimson lipstick is unmistakably va-va-va-voom," the news provider reports. "Just don't overwhelm the shade with busy accessories - limit your add-ons to stud earrings...or an oversize cuff."

How to wear a short dress in the wintertime
23 December 2010

While it may be cold outside, there's no reason your ensemble shouldn't still sizzle. In fact, now is a great time to throw on a chic mini-dress, whether you're on your way to a romantic date or Sunday brunch with your family.

When wearing a short semi-formal dress in cold weather, however, you should remember to pair it with the appropriate accessories. Though you may be used to wearing open-toed shoes with short skirts, high-heeled booties are funky and cute - and seasonally appropriate! If the air is especially chilly, however, you may want to rock a pair of over-the-knee boots instead.

Dark tights are a necessity when sporting a flirty number in the wintertime. If the dress is simple, opt for patterned stockings to add a bit of flair to your look. Print fabrics, however, look best with single-hued tights.

The right accessories even make it possible to wear a mini-dress at work.

"My secret to getting away with wearing a super short dress to the office? Throw a giant cardigan over it!" an analyst at Refinery29.com told the news source.

The right boots for any outfit
23 December 2010

Now that winter has officially begun and snow has started falling in some parts of the country, one thing is for certain - it is boot weather. And while this footwear looks great with almost any outfit, ladies should consider the style of the boot before pairing it with an ensemble.

If your boots have a lot of buckles, zippers or hardware, they are likely to appear heavy. Refinery29.com suggests wearing feminine pieces to lighten your look. Equestrian-style boots are sleek and chic and also look best when paired with flirty semi-formal dresses.

Over-the-knee boots are versatile, as they can be worn with short or long dresses. To emphasize the height of the dramatic footwear, the news source recommends sporting an item that boasts a short, full skirt in a bold pattern.

"Make practical flat boots tough-girl chic with lots of layers and a pop of unexpected color," the news outlet adds. A brightly hued semi-formal dress and a chic cardigan are perfect items to pair with flat boots, but don't forget to put on dark, textured tights - it is winter, after all!

Black Swan costume designer chats about her creations for the film
23 December 2010

The Oscar race is officially on, with scores of five-star movies being released just this month. Of course, one of the most talked-about movies is none other than Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

The film, which has already won a slew of awards, features fantastic acting, incredible direction and unforgettable fashion. Luckily, the Los Angeles Times had the chance to chat with Laura Mulleavy, one of two talented ladies who dressed stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in a number of mind-bending creations.

Mulleavy spoke with the news source about a gorgeous white formal dress Portman's character Nina shows off in one scene.

"The back is a central focus point in the film," she told the news outlet. "Dancers like to show the bones in their backs and the camera follows the back of Nina's head a lot."

Women currently searching for a picture-perfect formal dress should remember this detail when scouring online for pieces to wear at their next event. Sometimes rocking a gorgeous, toned back is all you need to do to turn heads.

Must-haves for a formal winter wardrobe
23 December 2010

December 21 marked the first day of winter, so it's now time to dive headfirst into the season's hottest fashions. What should you be on the lookout for as you are creating your wintry wardrobe?

If you're searching for a formal dress to wear in the cold weather, dark colors may seem appropriate. However, according to InStyle.com, you should opt for lighter hues as the temperatures drop.

"Toss all the old rules of what colors to wear when - pretty pastels provide a much-needed pick-me-up in fall and winter," the news source reports. "For evening, look for beaded styles that offer a bit of coverage at the neckline."

You should also look for a silhouette that boasts a full, short skirt. However, you may want to protect your legs from the cold weather. Instead of a plain pair of tights, the news provider suggests slipping on lace stockings.

When looking for a jacket to throw over your formal dress, opt for either a military-inspired coat or a sequined blazer. When wearing a longer garment, wear a military jacket with a cinched waist to keep your appearance ultra-feminine. Pair short dresses with a sequined coat that is longer than the hemline for a flirty look.

Emily Blunt looks beautiful in a blue and beige cocktail dress
23 December 2010

Emily Blunt may hail from across the pond, but the woman is giving every Hollywood star out there a run for their money. Not so surprisingly, the actress - best known now as Mrs. John Krasinski - stepped out at the premiere for her film Gulliver's Travels in quite the fetching creation.

Blunt's piece was remarkable for a number of reasons. To start, her getup, which featured a sky-blue bodice and a striking beige bottom, looked as though it could have been just a classic skirt and blouse combination.

While this may seem somewhat casual, Emily was able to add a saucier detail to her outfit as well. In fact, the Devil Wears Prada star was showing off a sliver of material on her right shoulder that appeared to mimic a bra strap. The feature allowed the girl to embrace both the boardroom and the boudoir in her look.

Women who are heading to an important event and want to show off a smidgen of sexiness may want to follow Ms. Blunt's lead. Sometimes all you need is an itty-bitty piece of material to turn an outfit on its head!

Angie Harmon gets an A for an amazing semi-formal dress
23 December 2010

It doesn't take much for Angie Harmon to look absolutely fabulous - the pin-thin star of the new hit show Rizzoli & Isles radiates beauty at every one of her red carpet appearances. Still, the ensemble she was sporting at the Screen Actors Guild nominations announcement was one for the books.

Angie's semi-formal dress was jaw-droppingly gorgeous for three distinct reasons. First, there was the color - although the piece was mostly black, the mid-section featured a pink and red stripe across it. While most people don't think of these two colors going together, the truth is that they look fantastic.

Next, there was the fabric. While the skirt was stitched together from what appeared to be sexy satin material, the bodice featured a gorgeous amount of black lace. The detail allowed Harmon to show the world the true hottie she is.

Finally, there was the design on the skirt. Sewn into her dress was a gorgeous, very-feminine bouquet of pink flowers. It doesn't get any lovelier than this!

How to spice up your semi-formal dress in an instant
23 December 2010

No matter how many semi-formal dresses you have in your closet, sometimes the inevitable happens - you get tired of your wardrobe. So what's a girl who's saving her pennies to do?

StyleList.com spoke with fashion expert Sonya Cosentini, who explained the clothing blues can be cured with one simple word - tights. The analyst is convinced that the right pair of stockings can spice up a little black dress or an old ensemble in a heartbeat.

"Try plaid tights in reds for a festive, fun look, or a textured, solid pattern in black for a more sophisticated touch," she told the news outlet. "Over-the-knee tights are also popular and edgy, and are worn with knee-high boots, pumps, skirts and dresses."

Cosentini also recommends showing off leggings and opaque, colored hosiery in order to really make a statement. Pair these items with a stunning cocktail dress and unforgettable ankle booties and you can't go wrong.

Of course, don't forget about the power of tights with lovely designs on them. Sometimes fantastic legwear is all you need to look like a star.

How to dress for an office party
23 December 2010

Christmas is right around the corner, and holiday parties will soon be winding down. Still, if your office has waited until this week to spread some yuletide cheer, it's likely you're wondering what to wear.

StyleList.com gave style mavens some tips on the best formal dresses to show off at an office shindig. The news source uses a black, floor-length getup Angelina Jolie showed off at a film premiere as Exhibit A.

"We love the Mad Men-esque cut of this classic party dress," the writer at the news source gushed. "The belted waist is flattering on nearly every figure, and the neckline keeps just enough covered to ward off creepy Kevin from accounting."

Ms. Jolie decided to pair her ensemble with a fuzzy white cardigan, which the news provider commends her for. They also advise ladies to choose ballet flats over pumps in order to look professional and at ease on the dance floor.

In the end, the key is to make sure you're comfortable. The holidays are about celebrating - and feeling great in the clothes you're in!

Appropriate attire for a holiday party
22 December 2010

When dressing for an office holiday party, many gals may have a tough time walking the line between workplace appropriate and cocktail-hour sexy. Sure, you want to turn heads (every woman does) but wearing a semi-formal dress that is too revealing may not be a good idea.

"You might be an incredible attorney, but if you show up showing a lot of cleavage and a lot of leg, it's really hard for people to erase that image from their mind the next time you're in the courtroom," Clinton Kelly, co-host of TLC's What Not to Wear, told StyleList.com. "Keep skirts to the knees, keep the cleavage to a minimum."

And while you may be off the clock, maintaining a professional appearance is always a good idea when you are around your superiors, as they are sure to remember your attire come Monday morning.

According to The Daily Mail, a survey of 3,000 managers in the UK found that wearing low-cut tops in the office is the biggest mistake a woman can make. Additionally, half of bosses revealed they have denied an employee a promotion or raise for dressing inappropriately.

However, you don't have to say no to every sultry ensemble. Keep the sexy cocktail dress for a fun New Year's Eve gathering with friends, and wear a more modest semi-formal dress to the office.

Rihanna tells Kanye West about her personal style
22 December

Ever since Rihanna burst on the scene in 2005, her Caribbean-infused R&B vibe and funky style have captured the nation's attention. As the years passed, she became a pop superstar and a fashion icon, and is currently one of the most talked-about women in the world of music and style.

Recently, Rihanna talked to another fashion-forward performer, Kanye West, for Interview magazine, and the rapper asked the Bajan beauty about her personal style.

"In the beginning of my career, I didn't have a lot of input in what I wore and stuff, but it was a very, innocent, girly look. Then after we put out Good Girl Gone Bad, it kind of became a darker, edgier look, and then it got even edgier on the last album [Rated R]," she told West.

From the ensembles Rihanna has been rocking, it's clear that she's returning to a feminine, easy-going look. At the 2010 American Music Awards, the songstress wore two formal dresses - a sheer, red number and a green Grecian gown - both of which featured fitted but flowing silhouettes, long skirts and soft draping.

Color is key when selecting a holiday semi-formal dress
22 December 2010

With the holiday season upon us and New Year's Eve around the corner, ladies everywhere are shopping for the perfect semi-formal dress for a wintry cocktail party. Recently, some industry insiders shared some advice with StyleList.com about finding the perfect outfit.

"Since most people opt for black, any color will stand out, but I love gold at this time of year," fashion expert Michael Smaldone told the news source. "It's so festive and it adds a little glow to winter skin."

If you feel more comfortable in a neutral tone, however, Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant recommends skipping black and beige in favor of winter white.

Those who can't bear the thought of leaving the house in anything but an LBD should focus on the item's details to stand out from the sea of similar dark-colored numbers.

"I'm into party fabrics, which I would describe as anything embellished," Bryant added. "I love sequins. I also love shiny fabrics. I love tulle. If you have an amazing little black dress, then accessorize and add your layers of necklaces and wear a fabulous pair of brocade shoes."

The Tourist costume designer talks about Jolie's formal dress
22 December 2010

Golden Globe nominations were just announced, and Angelina Jolie snagged a Best Actress nomination for The Tourist (costar Johnny Depp is up for Best Actor for the film as well). And while many people are talking about the movie's performances, we can't stop thinking about her phenomenally elegant wardrobe in the movie.

When her character attends a ball in Venice, Italy, Jolie appears in one of the most stunning formal dresses we've ever seen - on screen and off! The black gown featured a full skirt and a dramatically long train, and was complemented with elbow-length gloves and a diamond choker.

"The black gown was designed to evoke the grand life, and to frame Angelina Jolie's beauty," Colleen Atwood, costume designer for the film, told People magazine. "The necklace was created...from an antique tiara, and [the diamonds were] definitely real!"

We can't wait to see what Jolie wears to the Golden Globe Awards - the glamorous getups she's sported while promoting The Tourist have all been knockouts. Whatever formal dress she chooses, we're sure she'll look like a million bucks, as Jolie regularly embodies the epitome of Hollywood elegance.

Don't go over-the-top this holiday season
21 December 2010

People often want to bring in the bells and whistles when it comes to the holiday season, but if there's one thing that should be controlled, it's a girl's wardrobe. Ladies - let grandma wear the Christmas sweater, OK?

In fact, the L.A. Times reports that semi-formal dresses created from deep, plush materials combined with glimmery accessories should just about do it.

"For this holiday season think about rich fabrics such as velvet or satin, as well as things that shine and sparkle," the news source reports. "And use these accessories - a clutch, a brooch, a belt - in small doses."

The news provider also has some other exciting ideas in order to stay festive while not going crazy with your clothes. In fact, girls can show off a bit of red lipstick to make their pouts pop, or instead sport a pair of bright, patterned socks with their ensembles.

Whatever you decide, make sure you feel comfortable in what you're wearing. The season is about looking fabulous - but also feeling fantastic as well!

Vogue editor talks about her fashion obsession
21 December 2010

Some women can't get enough of purchasing semi-formal dresses by the dozen. However, once in a while, being a shopaholic can take over a girl's life.

Just ask Anna Dello Russo, the editor of Vogue Japan and self-proclaimed clothing addict. The Guardian recently spoke with the woman, who admitted her fashion affliction can sometimes get in the way of her wellbeing.

"Fashion, in me, is folie, is sickness! I never bored of fashion," she told the news outlet. "It is my vision for life. Reality for me is too tough. Fashion is an escape. Fashion! Is my addiction!"

The editor goes on to explain that she once bought two apartments which were adjacent to one another - one for herself, and the other for her clothes! She also believes her split from her husband was rooted in her over-the-top passion for attire.

Women who adore buying different formal dresses, cocktail dresses, and other types of clothing may want to be careful. Try to purchase the necessary items - for prom and your spring dance, for example - and see if your life is still on track.

Reese Witherspoon looks marvelous in maroon
21 December 2010

You have to hand it to Reese Witherspoon. The actress can wear even the most somber of colors and her vivacious personality still radiates way down the red carpet.

Witherspoon recently stepped out at the premiere for hew new film, How Did You Know, in a deep maroon semi-formal dress that was perfect for the winter but a bit of a contrast for her perky, infectious attitude. However, the starlet made it work for her.

Reese livened up her ensemble in two distinct ways. First, the Academy Award-winner was showing off some super-sparkling accessories, which included a pair of shimmery diamond stud earrings. Also, the bubbly blonde chose to work a pair of sky-high pumps that gave her super-slim bod - and her spirits - a lift.

And, of course, there was that 1,000-watt smile! Women who have an affinity for deeper colors when it comes to formal dresses but still want to refrain from turning into a wallflower at their upcoming school shindig may want to remember to flash their pearly-whites all evening long.

Carla Gugino shows off a surprisingly sexy LBD
20 December 2010

Sometimes an LBD plays it safe, and sometimes it can be totally sexy. Actress Carla Gugino recently showed off a piece that was surprisingly a bit of both.

The pretty performer, who is best known for appearing in Entourage as the tough-as-nails agent Amanda Daniels, stepped out at the New York premiere for the film True Grit in a dress that at first seemed prim and proper. From the front, onlookers were privy to a number of safe details - long sleeves, below-the-knees hemline and a somewhat elevated neckline.

However, it was when the beautiful brunette turned around that the crowd really got a taste of the woman's risk-taking abilities. In fact, the back featured a cut-out that allowed the girl to show off her super-hot bod.

Dresses like these are wonderful options for girls who want to reveal some skin but don't want to take a daring style too far. Surprising cutouts are sometimes sexier than super-daring dress details. Throw on a pair of cheetah-print pumps like Carla and feel comfy - and sensuous - all night long.

Cheryl Burke loves her some pink
17 December 2010

Almost every woman adores the color pink, but it looks as though Cheryl Burke, one of the professional movers on Dancing with the Stars, is especially gaga for the gorgeous hue. In fact, we couldn't help but notice that the beautiful woman is often seen hitting the red carpet in different varieties of this shade!

It was just this February that Burke stepped out at an event for Sports Illustrated in quite the sexy pink number. Her cocktail dress, which was strapless and fell right above her knees, hugged her cute and curvaceous body.

A few months later, Cheryl was showing off a more elegant dress, but still embraced the rosy hue. Her choice for an Emmy Awards after party was strapless, fell to the ground, and featured a girly, glittery belt.

Finally, Ms. Burke hit up the American Music Awards just last month in yet another strapless pink creation. This time the pro-dancer channeled her inner vixen, as her getup was complemented by a pair of super-high strappy heels and a sexy silver clutch.

Taylor Swift loves dressing up
17 December 2010

Taylor Swift may be a sneakers and jeans kind of girl at heart, but the young lady - who just turned 21 - admits that she also adores wearing formal dresses.

"When I'm in Nashville, I feel like I can go natural and not really worry about it, but I generally love makeup and I love dress-up. That's why award shows are so much fun for me," Swift recently told Boston.com. "I'd never wish away makeup and getting all dolled up."

Swift's penchant for slipping into something elegant was evident this past month. In fact, the adorable singer stepped out at the American Music Awards in a gorgeous sparkling semi-formal dress, while a few weeks before that, she made an appearance in a gorgeous red, strapless, floor-length formal gown. Talk about versatility!

However, our favorite ensemble that Swift stepped out in was at the MET Costume Gala this past May. The blonde beauty was working it in a gorgeous white gown that would be perfect for any blushing bride.

Perhaps she and Jake Gyllenhaal will get super-serious and she'll be searching for her own wedding dress sometime soon?

How to wear white lace in winter
16 December 2010

Though white lace can sometimes be bridal, it is also ideal for winter-wear - the color beautifully complements the cold weather and the fabric mimics the intricate pattern of snowflakes. However, while this delicate material can often seem too light for the winter, there are a few ways you can warm up a white lace semi-formal dress.

Instead of pairing the piece with light-colored items, go dark. Black or gray stockings will be an ideal accompaniment, as will a deeply hued sweater or shawl. Ladies who want to infuse a bit of color into the look can opt for navy or aubergine tones.

When selecting accessories, the bigger the better. Heavier jewelry will help ground the lacy garment, keeping it from looking too summery. Steer clear of open toed shoes or pumps that don't cover your foot and slip on a pair of boots - knee-high flats and high-heeled booties are both great options.

Whether you're selecting an outfit for a family dinner or getting ready for an office holiday party, a white lace semi-formal dress will look great this season. Remember to throw on some seasonally appropriate accents and you'll be good to go!

New research reveals women's thoughts about undergarments
16 December 2010

Whether your slipping on a wedding gown or putting on a beautiful formal dress, women may want to consider what they wear underneath. According to a new poll in the upcoming issue of ShopSmart, 47 percent of women feel sexier or more confident when sporting nice underwear!

The survey also found that 12 percent feel the underwear is an important part of their outfit, and 10 percent of gals own more than 35 pairs. While white, black and neutral were the most popular hues (collecting 29 percent, 21 percent and 15 percent, respectively), pink was the favorite among colors, with 9 percent.

"What you wear under your clothes is just as important - maybe even more - as what you wear on the outside," said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart.

Ladies preparing for a big night out should remember to try on their dress wearing the appropriate undergarments before the event. This will give you time to shop for new pieces if you notice visible panty lines or if your bra straps interfere with your gown's neckline.

Nicole Richie shows off quite the elegant wedding dress
16 December 2010

If there's one wedding dress that fashionistas around the country have been yearning to get a glimpse of, it's Nicole Richie's. The 29-year-old mom of two, who just wed her sweetheart of four years, Joel Madden, has been thought of as a super style maven ever since she landed in the public eye years ago.

Well, ladies can now take comfort in knowing that images of one of the three gowns she showed off on her super-special day have finally hit the masses. In the photo, the new Mrs. Madden was sporting a wedding dress that would have any guest in awe. Her creation featured long, lacy sleeves that hugged her super-petite frame.

Of course, Nicole chose to go big for her very important event. The gown's skirt, which appeared to be created from an endless array of tulle, flowed out from the bodice and allowed the woman to embrace her inner princess.

It appears as though the lovely lady and her hot hubby couldn't have been happier with the way things turned out that night.

"It was magical," Richie told the news source. Her new husband also echoed those super-sweet sentiments. "It was the best night of my life," Joel added.

More info on why honeysuckle is the go-to color of next year
15 December 2010

If there's one color that's going to be the go-to shade of 2011, it's pink. In fact, the Pantone Color Institute recently named honeysuckle, a version of the hue, its "it" color of next year.

Boston.com recently got some more inside scoop on why this shade was picked above the rest.

"In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going - perfect to ward off the blues," Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, told the news outlet." She also went onto explain that the shade is thought of as positive since it's so close to red - the most "viscerally alive" hue in the color spectrum.

Women headed to the altar may want to remember this when choosing bridesmaid dresses. Pink is a perfect spring and summer color and looks fabulous on almost every woman out there.

Also, daring women about to enter martial bliss may want to think about infusing this shade into their wedding dress. If Gwen Stefani can do it, you can too!

Lauren Hutton dishes on how to achieve your own sense of style
15 December 2010

Lauren Hutton has been in the public eye for decades, and at 67-years-old, she's finally embraced her own sense of style. In fact, Hutton has the casual-but-chic look down to a tee.

The actress and model, who recently appeared alongside Demi Moore and David Duchovny in the hilarious romp The Joneses, spoke about how she loves to appear as though she threw on an ensemble instead of taking hours to get ready.

"You never want to look like you've spent too much time getting dressed," she recently wrote on a designer's site, according to StyleList.com. "It's better to look as if you've just thrown something on rather than prissed everything up."

Women who want to embrace Lauren's ideals can do so quite easily. Show off a stunning semi-formal dress but throw a multi-colored scarf over it. Or, be daring and pair a piece with mismatched tights.

In the end, looking like you whipped something together in two seconds flat while actually spending hours thinking about your getup may impress more people than you think. Take some chances with your wardrobe, and you're bound to wind up looking incredible!

It's not that difficult for Garcia to look like a goddess, but this wedding dress solidified her place in the super-hot brides Hall of Fame.

What to wear while shopping for your tree
15 December 2010

Christmastime is here, which means it's time to start baking holiday-inspired cookies and scouring online for gifts for family and friends. And, don't forget about another important activity - tree shopping!

For fashionistas, this can be an opportune moment to show off your trendiest winter ensemble. StyleList.com gave some pointers on what to wear while out and about.

Ladies who want to wear a casual semi-formal dress while picking out the prettiest pine may also want to rock their cutest pair of boots. The footwear will look fantastic and will protect your feet from the slush and snow.

As for outerwear, girls should use this time to think outside the box. "If you're tired of the ubiquitous down and puffer coats, consider getting a workwear-inspired parka," the news outlet reports.

Kathy Ireland imagines perfect dress for Kate Middleton
14 December 2010

It seems that everyone can't wait to weigh in on Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding. Celebrities from Katy Perry to Elton John have all spoken up about the upcoming royal vows, and now Kathy Ireland has shared her opinion about the perfect wedding dress for the British bride-to-be.

"Kate Middleton's a gorgeous, stunning woman, and I see her in a fabulous silk strapless gown, maybe with some laser-cut flowers. I see clean lines, but volume. And I see her making veils and trains very important again," Ireland told Stylelist.com.

However, it seems that this is not the first royal wedding that has affected Ireland, who married Dr. Greg Olsen in 1988. She told the news source that her wedding dress was inspired by the gown worn by Princess Diana when she exchanged vows with Prince Charles in 1981.

"I had sleeves that were bigger than my head," she told the news source.

Ireland also had a bit of advice for all women preparing to walk down the aisle - remember to eat!

"There's nothing worse than a bride who starves herself," she added. "You should be happy when you get married and if I was starving, I'd be incredibly cranky."

How to dress for a holiday party
14 December 2010

Dressing for a holiday party can be difficult - you want to look festive and fun but still chic and glamorous. Luckily, it's not to hard to pick out the perfect semi-formal dress, especially with advice from some of the industry's most knowledgeable fashionistas.

While red and green may be the staples of the holiday palette, be careful not to go overboard.

"Bright Christmas-y red and bright Christmas-y green - is just a little bit too obvious, a little too cliché," Clinton Kelly, co-host of TLC's What Not to Wear, told StyleList.com. "If you want to look more sophisticated, it's probably a better idea to look for richer colors - things like jewel tones are great, deeper burgundies, anything in the wine family is nice, merlot, that kind of thing."

Danielle Fishel, host of Style Network's The Dish, reminds women to select an item that is seasonally appropriate. If you live in a colder climate, don't pair your short dress with open-toed shoes and bare legs. Instead, throw on some dark stockings, stylish booties or platform pumps, and a chic wrap.

But most importantly? Pick a getup that you are comfortable in.

"When you wear an outfit you feel good in no matter what the seating arrangements are, or what the lighting is, you feel confident. And confidence is sexy," Fishel told the news source.

Gossip Girl star credits show for fashion sense
14 December 2010

Girls across the country often look to the hit CW show Gossip Girl for tips on what to wear, as the characters often dazzle in an array of formal dresses sure to make any gal drool. But ladies looking for some real life advice are now in luck too. Recently, one of the program's newest stars, Katie Cassidy, opened up about how being on the series has affected her style philosophy.

"I'm learning about fashion and I find myself knowing more about what I should wear," she told People magazine. "The whole show is very chic and the clothes are unbelievably beautiful. It's like a girl's playground."

And it seems Cassidy, better known to fans as Juliet Sharp, is learning a lot from the fashion-forward show. In fact, the starlet recently appeared in an uber-glamorous formal dress that left us speechless.

At US Weekly's Hot Hollywood Stars Who Care Event in Los Angeles, Cassidy wowed the crowd in a metallic, long-sleeved minidress that showed off her tanned, toned legs and highlighted her fit physique. While Gossip Girl may be helping her to cultivate her sense of style, what is shaping her form?

"I always mix it up. I do everything from yoga to running - StairMaster does wonders for your butt, ladies!" she told the news source.

White formal dresses that are anything but bridal
14 December 2010

When most women think of white gowns, there is one garment that immediately comes to mind - wedding gowns. However, a few ultra-glamorous celebs recently stepped out in white formal dresses that were anything but aisle attire.

At the New York premiere of The Tourist, Angelina Jolie was a vision in white. Though the color can often appear overly demure, her long-sleeved, floor-length gown wasn't too modest - it featured a plunging V-neck and a thigh-high slit.

To keep the number from looking like a wedding dress, Jolie chose an unexpected fabric - suede! The plush material made Jolie look like a snow queen instead of a bride-to-be.

Hollywood 'It girl' and certified style maven Lea Michele rocked an ivory piece that avoided the "too-bridal" vibe with a stellar, fashion-forward silhouette. The light-colored formal dress included a short, three-tiered skirt and a folded, strapless neckline. Additionally, Michele sported slightly sultry makeup (a smoky brown eye and glossy lip) that made the look best suited for a night on the town.

White is a wonderful hue to wear in winter, and with a few styling tips from Hollywood's hottest, a snow-colored formal dress can be fashionable, not bridal!

How to layer underneath a formal dress
14 December 2010

With winter weather officially underway across much of the country, many women feel that they must sport long-sleeved, floor-length formal dresses to evening affairs. However, one Hollywood star recently showed that there is a way to rock a light and frilly gown in cold temperatures - without looking stuck in the wrong season!

At an event in New York City, Liv Tyler wore a short, one-shouldered chiffon dress with feminine gray ruffles that was anything but wintry. To keep from appearing too summery, however, Tyler added black knit stockings, a long-sleeved black t-shirt and too-cute high-heeled booties.

Though we've advocated the use of dark-colored tights and boots to make a springtime ensemble more appropriate for colder weather, we've never considered throwing on a t-shirt underneath a formal dress. While it may seem wacky, we have to say the look totally worked!

Tyler maintained a chic, streamlined appearance by wearing stockings and a shirt in the same color, and selecting a long-sleeved tee that was fitted - anything baggier would have appeared too sloppy and could have easily added unnecessary bulk.

Information about Miranda Lambert's wedding dress
14 December 2010

While people around the world are spending hours trying to figure out what Kate Middleton's wedding dress will look like, country fans may be just as curious to find out some details about Miranda Lambert's wedding day attire. The award-winning vocalist is engaged to fellow country star Blake Shelton.

At the American Country Awards in Las Vegas, Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott dished some dirt about the gown that Lambert will wear when she walks down the aisle.

"She's a real woman and I love that about her, so it will be something that shows off her curves," Scott told People magazine.

We can't wait to see the gown that Lambert finally chooses, and we bet fiancé Shelton feels the same way. In fact, the wedding dress may not be the only surprise to Shelton on the big day - it turns out, he's not involved in the wedding planning!

"Last I heard [the wedding date] was in the spring, but that's a constantly changing event," he told the news source. "Miranda is going to do this exactly how she wants to do it and I'm staying the hell out of the way."

A high slit is perfect for wintry sex appeal
14 December 2010

Women may often be at a loss as to how to infuse their winter formal wear with sex appeal - after all, gowns should cover a lot of skin to remain seasonally appropriate. However, it's possibly to sizzle in a formal dress perfect for colder weather. In fact, it can be downright easy!

Instead of opting for an open back or a thigh-grazing slit, which can seem too summery for a January affair, select a gown that features an up-to-there slit! But don't take our word for it - just look at some of Hollywood's most gorgeous gals.

At the British Fashion Awards in London, England, Victoria Beckham stepped out in a black formal dress with draped sleeves and a head-turning slit. Thanks to this detail, she was able to show off her great legs without compromising her sensible winter style.

While the temperatures may have been a bit warmer at the American Country Awards in Las Vegas, Carrie Underwood wore a piece that would have been perfect in a colder climate as well. Though it left her arms bare, the sparkling red gown covered most of Ms. Underwood's upper body and remained sexy with a thigh-high slit.

This winter, you can cover up and still stay sultry by sporting a formal dress with a slit. Just remember to keep the rest of elements modest - showing a lot of leg, cleavage and back all at once may be too much skin!

Danny Bonaduce gets married, his bride wears a gorgeous dress
14 December 2010

Danny Bonaduce, former star of the Partridge Family, recently had some happy news to share to the world - he's married once again! The actor and his girlfriend of three years, Amy Railsback, got hitched in Maui, Hawaii, right on the shore.

According to People.com, the ceremony was a surprise coordinated by his blushing bride.

"I was going to tell him," Railsback told the news outlet. "It was an unintentional surprise."

While Bonaduce got quite the shock, we were in awe of Railsback's wedding dress. The 28-year-old former substitute teacher, who is now Bonaduce's manager, was able to embody both casual and beach-inspired ideals.

In fact, the beautiful woman was dressed in a crotched white gown that looked absolutely fetching. She furthered her ethereal appearance by showing off a few strands of beads and a beautiful white flower in her hair.

Women about to get hitched beachside may want to follow Railsback's lead and choose a wedding gown created from simple material. Sometimes it's the accessories that can bring a dress from simple to sexy!

Susan Sarandon looks beautiful in a blue Moroccan-inspired formal dress
10 December 2010

It seems like singledom is doing great things for Susan Sarandon. Not only does the 64-year-old actress, who split with Tim Robbins in 2009, look glowing, she also just stepped out in quite the head-turning formal dress.

Sarandon made an appearance at the 10th Marrakech Film Festival in a piece that certainly paid homage to the North African country. The creation, which was stitched together from flowy and feminine cobalt blue fabric, was cinched just below her bosom.

Susan's ensemble was also memorable for another reason - it's detailing. The piece featured scores of silver gemstones and beads that called attention to Morocco's signature style.

Susan also showed off significant footwear - black peep-toe pumps. The Academy Award-winner reminded ladies that cobalt blue and black go together, and style aficionados should feel free to wear them at the same time.

Mothers-of-the-bride who are stressing about what to wear at their daughters' special days may want to follow Sarandon's lead and go for something unique, interesting and unforgettable. Of course, they may want to check with their baby girl beforehand and get her approval!

10 December 2010

If you've recently gotten serious with someone special, the holiday season may mean one thing, and one thing only - meeting your boyfriend's parents.

If you're nearly a few weeks away from being introduced to the folks who raised your main squeeze, don't sweat it. In fact, the entire process can be made easier by - what else? - selecting something fantastic to wear.

According to TheFrisky.com, women may want to think about showing off something neutral. Semi-formal dresses in these shades are bound to be a hit with the possible new in-laws.

Also, the news source recommends that ladies think carefully about a piece's style in order to make an impression on that special day.

"If you prefer a dress, then go festive instead of sexy," the news outlet reports, adding that, "We don't want your beau's parents thinking you're on a mission, do we?"

Girls can spice up their little black dress by complementing it with a red cardigan or a pair of green tights. The look will seem dressy-casual, and is bound to please your boyfriend's mom and dad.

Gwen Stefani is vivacious in a vibrant yellow formal dress
09 December 2010

Leave it to Gwen Stefani to show women around the world how it's done. Although the edgy vocalist often wears funky clothing on stage and while running errands, when she is needed on the red carpet she is nothing short of uber-feminine.

Stefani proved she knows how to pick out an incredible formal dress when she stepped out at the Kennedy Center honors in Washington, D.C., in a magnificent ball gown that embodied a bit of Belle from Beauty and the Beast and a smidgen of her sexy rock star persona. Her creation, which was an unforgettable shade of vibrant yellow, must have had the crowd buzzing like a swarm of busy bees.

Stefani's dress featured a mermaid cut as well as a few black accents. The most notable one was a stitched-in, thin black belt that was topped off with an adorable black bow.

Gwen's ability to pick such a unique creation shouldn't be surprising. After all, this is the woman who, when she wed hubby Gavin Rossdale, showed off an elegant wedding dress that featured pink accents on the train!

Michelle Williams embraces the beauty of a bow at her film premiere
09 December 2010

Is the fashion sense of the late Marilyn Monroe rubbing off on Michelle Williams? The Academy Award-nominated actress, who is currently filming My Week With Marilyn, a film about the fallen starlet, showed up to an event in a semi-formal dress that channeled both retro and modern ideals.

Williams stepped out at the premiere for her new film, Blue Valentine, in a silver and white dress. The beautiful bodice was all sparkles, while the skirt, which fell well above her knees, featured a gorgeous ruffled design.

However, Michelle's creation was absolutely marvelous for one specific reason - the sewn-in black belt that was cinched around her waist. The accessory featured a gorgeous black bow, giving the very mature actress a youthful and girly glow.

It looks as though this addition to formal dresses may be making a comeback. In fact, Gwen Stefani was just snapped by photographers in a yummy yellow gown that had a black bow accent on it. Perhaps a piece such as this would be perfect for prom?

Choose a semi-formal dress with designs on it and feel super-feminine
08 December 2010

While colors can help a woman feel extra girly, there are certain images that allow a lady to fully embrace her femininity. From flowers to butterflies, the options can be endless.

Bonnie Somerville, a stunning actress who most recently appeared in the film The Ugly Truth, embraced this trend at a recent Hollywood fundraiser. The gorgeous blonde was showing off a sexy vibrant red semi-formal dress that barely covered her buttocks and was perfectly cinched at her waist.

However, it was a detail on the dress that brought the performer into the center of attention. On the creation was the image of three beautiful birds that appeared to be doves. The stitching was a magnificent addition to an already perfect piece.

Ladies currently looking for the ideal gown for prom may want to remember this feature when deciding on the dress of their dreams. Sometimes a small detail, such as the imprint of an incredibly natural and etheral image, can help a girl standout among the other students. Search now and be happy partygoer later on.

Victoria Justice shows off the power of multiple straps
07 December 2010

Whoever said that less is more when it comes to semi-formal dresses needs to take a look at Victoria Justice. The adorable actress stepped out at KIIS FM's Jingle Ball in a gorgeous dress that featured not one, not two - but three straps on each shoulder.

The piece, which was created from beautiful purple-bluish fabric, was nothing short of perfect. The formfitting cut allowed the Zoey 101 performer to show off her flawless bod while highlighting her toned legs.

Of course, the straps also brought the piece to another level. With three thick pieces of black material cascading over her shoulders, the 17-year-old star embraced her sexy side while still keeping herself covered.

Justice also did her creation justice by pairing her ensemble with a gorgeous leather jacket. Ladies headed out to a chic-but-casual affair may want to take a cue from the Nickelodeon actress and remember this staple piece of outerwear. When it comes to looking like a superstar, sometimes it's all in the details.

Kate Middleton may already know her wedding dress designer
07 December 2010

Has Kate Middleton already chosen her wedding dress designer? If you're a booking agent in the United Kingdom, all signs point to yes.

According to Marie Claire UK the odds are so in favor of one esteemed clothing guru, Bruce Oldfield, that betting agencies are refusing to take any more wagers.

"He started as a 4 to 1 joint favorite, but since then the odds have been slashed to 1 to 3. That would mean there is a 75 percent chance of him being the wedding dress design," a spokesperson from booking agency Paddy Power told the news outlet.

However, Alice Temperley, a friend of Middleton's, insists that that the future royal still isn't sure of the wedding gown she'll be wearing come April 29.

"She hasn't decided yet. I can't say much more than that," she told The Telegraph.

Middleton's dress will certainly be gorgeous, but it's likely to be costly! Brides who don't have the budget of a princess may want to search online for steals and deals before they become a Mrs.

Clinton Kelly dishes on how to dress for a Christmas party
06 December 2010

With the Christmas season in full swing, invitations to holiday parties are about to be making their way into the mail. This may lead to style mavens across the country asking themselves one important question - what should I wear?

Clinton Kelly can certainly tell you what not to show off at an upcoming soiree. The host of TLC's What Not to Wear and fashion guru advises women to keep one article of clothing in the back of their closets - the Christmas sweater.

"I really don't know why people think that Christmas sweaters are cute," Kelly told the news source. "If you're baking cookies with your grandkids, I kind of get it. But the second you leave the house in a Christmas sweater, it's like, ooh, just add another decade to your age."

Kelly has a few other tricks under his stylish belt as well. Girls should remember to be comfortable in their ensembles and embrace their personalities. Being oneself when dressing is vital to feeling good.

However, Clinton cringes when thinking about seriously noisy jewelry during this time.

"I don't think you should wear anything that jingles on purpose," he told the news outlet.

How to dress for Chanukah
06 December 2010

It's the holiday season and Chanukah is here! Those who are attending a party during one of the eight special nights may be wondering what to bring, buy, and of course, wear.

Luckily, StyleList.com gave fashionistas around the world some pointers on how to look absolutely fabulous during this time.

First and foremost, ladies should stick with the holiday's signature color - blue. Semi-formal dresses in this shade will look wonderful at parties and are perfect for the season (and less expected than red or green).

Girls who are hoping to show off a sky blue creation may want to think about complementing their dress with darker tights.

"Wearing black tights with lighter-colored dresses anchors the look and helps ground more delicate articles of clothing," the news source reports.

Finally, women should top off their looks with unforgettable accessories and a gorgeous pair of shoes. The right outerwear can sometimes help women make their marks at upcoming shindigs.

"The waterfall cut was big in sweaters for years, but we love it on otherwise structured pieces like [a] suede jacket," the news outlet reports.

Three celebs, three lacy black dresses - who wore it best?
03 December 2010

If there's a single version of the little black dress that is making its way onto the bodies of celebs everywhere, it's one that's full of lace. In fact, this go-to getup has been so popular that starlets everywhere are dashing to the red carpet with it on.

The latest trio of A-listers - Kirsten Dunst, Taylor Swift and Emma Watson - each wore this piece to a recent event, adding to it their own personality and style.

Dunst showed up to the premiere of All Good Things in an LBD that was both prim and pretty. However, she spiced things up with black opaque tights, giving her ensemble a touch of winter flair.

Also, Swift stepped out at the CMT Artists of the Year event in Tennessee wearing a super-feminine black semi-formal dress that was matched with a gorgeous pair of flower-accentuated black pumps. Taylor went for a sexier look by choosing to keep her slim legs bare.

Finally, Watson attended a premiere for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1 in an LBD that was stitched together with loads of frills on the hemline. The beautiful Brit also added a dash of color and was showing off a pretty red pin. Gorgeous!

Glitters and sparkles reign supreme for 2010 formal dresses
03 December 2010

2010 is almost over, which means that top 10 lists for movies, books and fashion will be hitting the masses any day now. It looks as though the Huffington Post got a jump on things, as the news source just made mention of their favorite formal dresses seen on the red carpet this year.

First up was Sandra Bullock's unforgettable champagne gown that she wore to the Oscars in March. The actress, who took home the Best Actress statuette for her performance in The Blind Side, looked outrageously awesome in a form-fitting piece fashioned from lacy and glittery material.

Another noteworthy mention was Kate Winslet, who also attended the Academy Awards in quite the standout silver number. Her sleek and simple gown, which was strapless, relied on the power of its shiny fabric rather than its cut.

Finally, who could forget Anne Hathaway's magnificent ball gown that she showed off at the Met Gala in May? The beautiful brunette was rocking a jaw-droppingly incredible strapless dress that featured a sweetheart neckline and endless glittery material.

Moral of the story? When it comes to making an impression, sparkles never fail. Look for a dress made from shiny fabric and be prepared to make a grand entrance at your next affair.

The perfect semi-formal dress for a big date
01 December 2010

Few decisions cause as much anxiety as selecting an outfit to wear on first date. After all, we all know how important first impressions are, so it's normal to want to dress to impress. But what type of ensemble is best?

"Your look should have a bit of whimsy. Dates are about having fun, breaking free and being sexy," designer Rebecca Taylor told More magazine.

A short, bright semi-formal dress that boasts an interesting silhouette may be the perfect solution. "The color pops, [a] one-shoulder neckline is eye catching and modern, and the slightly shorter hemline amps up the sex-appeal," Taylor told the publication.

And now that temperatures are dropping, you may want to add a few layers before heading out the door. Taylor suggests wearing a light jacket with no lining (it will look less bulky) and a textured scarf.

"The knit [scarf] softens the entire look. It's something you can add to any outfit," she added.

Women who want a great semi-formal dress for an upcoming first date should start looking online as soon as possible - processing and shipping times can vary, so shop early to ensure your item arrives on time!

Reese Witherspoon feels sexy at 34
01 December 2010

Few women look as consistently put together as Reese Witherspoon. The blonde beauty regularly wows the crowds with unforgettable formal dresses on the red carpet, and even looks great in casual clothes when she's seen running errands with her two adorable children.

So what's her secret weapon to looking so alluring? According to Witherspoon herself, it's her age.

"I think as a woman, you get older, you feel more confident in your sexuality. You're not as intimidated by it, not as embarrassed by it," she told Glamour magazine. "I am calmer - I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier."

Witherspoon graces the cover of the publication's January issue in a semi-formal dress that's especially saucy. The number features choppy layers of flirtatious red fabric, and boasts bold black leather detailing. She paired the piece with dark fishnet stockings and a come-hither stare that's guaranteed to stop men in their tracks.

However, it seems that the actress' sense of humor boosts her self-confidence as well.

"There's always going to be somebody younger or sexier. That's why I like to say, and it's become my famous line, 'Funny doesn't sag,'" she added.

Wear herringbone patterns and look fabulous this winter
01 December 2010

When thinking about patterns, one of the most overlooked is herringbone. The design is ideal for cold evenings and perfect for the late fall.

It looks as though several clothing gurus agree with this notion.

"It is such an easy pattern to wear - it isn't a stripe, it isn't a polka dot or a flower," clothing expert Simon Kneen told StyleList.com. "It can work in a subtle, tasteful and stylish way that says 'I understand the better things in life.'"

Women currently looking for a casual semi-formal dress for an autumn event may want to think about showing off herringbone. The design makes for wonderful semi-formal dresses that can be worn to both daytime and evening affairs.

Also, ladies should remember that accessories, such as jackets, belts and hats, also can solidify the look.

"Complement any outfit with a herringbone article of clothing. It instantly adds polish and sophistication," Lindsay Albanese, celebrity wardrobe stylist and style expert, told the news outlet.

Amber Tamblyn looks gorgeous in green
01 December 2010

Amber Tamblyn is one serious cutie, isn't she? The gorgeous star of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants nixed the jeans made popular in the movies for quite the striking formal dress at the premiere of her new film, 127 Hours.

Amber's adorable ensemble was significant for two reasons - its color and cut. The piece, which featured a striking belt cinched around her waist, was created from silky material in bright kelly green.

The former Joan of Arcadia actress reminded women around the world that kelly green remains one of the most bold and daring colors out there. The hue, which often takes courage to wear, elicits retro sentiments and allows a young lady to draw attention to her without having to work for it.

Girls who are searching for prom dresses may want to think about this crazy color while shopping. Women who lean toward simpler dress cuts may find they are more of a wallflower than a social butterfly, yet wearing kelly green can help them turn into the belle of the ball.

Lea Thompson looks beautiful in cobalt blue
01 December 2010

Is Lea Thompson truly almost 50 years old? The veteran actress, who is perhaps best known for playing Marty McFly's mom in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, looks at least 10 years younger than her age.

Of course, with such wonderful style choices, it's easy to see why. Thompson recently made another appearance at a benefit concert sporting a casual semi-formal dress that featured a gorgeous shade of cobalt blue.

Thompson was able to remind all women that there's something about this shade that can turn heads in an instant. While baby blue is perfect for the spring and aquamarine is the go-to shade for summer affairs, cobalt blue is often best served on women attending events during the winter.

Because of this, girls looking for ensembles for an upcoming winter formal might want to think about sporting this color at the event. Gowns and floor-length dresses created from heavy cobalt blue material will pay homage to the season while allowing women to look super-fashionable when the thermometer is down low.

Liz Fuller shows off a whimsical yellow semi-formal dress
01 December 2010

There's something special about the color pale yellow. While all pastels evoke feelings of whimsy and wonderment, light citrusy hues can do more for a semi-formal dress than most shades of the rainbow.

Liz Fuller, model, actress and entrepreneur, proved this theory when she stepped out at 150th anniversary of the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London. The buxom blonde was sporting a strapless semi-formal dress that featured a number of glittery diamond accents.

However, it was the shade of Fuller's dress that was able to garner the most attention. The striking woman had on a creation that was fashioned from the loveliest of yellow hues, proving that almost all other shades pale in comparison.

JWoww shows off her wow factor in a striking semi-formal dress
01 December 2010

It's safe to say that all members of the Jersey Shore are fans of itty-bitty clothing, but sometimes they know how to work it just right. Jenni "JWoww" Farley proved this when she stepped out at a Las Vegas event in a skimpy but perfectly-sexy semi-formal dress.

JWoww had on a little black dress that barely covered her derrière. The piece, which appeared to made from silk, also featured two cut outs on either side of her rock-hard abs.

While this sounds a little too saucy for regular gals, the reality star's creation was toned-down in other areas. In fact, instead of featuring a plunging neckline - a detail that Ms. Farley is often fond of - the piece had a super-high bodice and completely hid her cleavage.

JWoww may be proud of her busty bosom, but it's nice to see she can wear ensembles that also highlight another great asset - her legs! Women should take a cue from the girl and find a dress as wonderful as this one.

Stylish celebs have surprising role models
01 December 2010

When shopping for formal dresses, women around the world are often inspired by glamorous celebrities, but we often forget that these stars have style role models of their own. However, the people that some leading ladies look up to are quite surprising.

Alexa Chung, model and MTV personality, often makes headlines for her chic-but-unique fashion sense, which revolves around finding garments that flatter her figure.

"I'm dressing for my body. So it's very flattering that other people might want to borrow my style, but really it's just making the most of what personally suits me, which is that I've got a long skinny leg and no boobs. So I dress to accommodate that," she told The New York Times.

But when she needs a bit of inspiration, the 26-year-old model doesn't seek out photos of the beautiful actresses.

"All of my beauty icons are men," she told the publication. "It's all about effortlessness. It's all about looking underdone."

Another fashion-forward celebrity with an unconventional role model? Lady Gaga. According to her website, the pop star lists Peggy Bundy, the leopard-print loving, bouffant-wearing housewife on the TV series Married... with Children, as one of her fashion icons.

Katy Perry talks about her personal style
01 December 2010

While fans around the world eagerly anticipate new music from Katy Perry, it seems that just as many women can't wait to see what new outfit the stunning songstress will wear. From cartoonish creations to traditional formal dresses, Perry always keeps the world of fashion on its toes.

Recently, Perry talked to Harper's Bazaar about her personal style.

"I have multi-personality disorder - in a very good way, of course - when it comes to my fashion choices," the brunette beauty told the publication. "When I first started playing around with my look, it was more of a Dita Von Teese pinup thing."

And while she sometimes gets flack for her revealing formal dresses, Perry doesn't apologize for her decisions.

"I'll tell you about my boobs and fashion. It can be hard to wear those looks because they're best on people who have no curves or thighs. I don't have a Kate Moss body, but I'm very proud and happy with mine," she explained.

Elaborate ensembles aside, we applaud Katy's healthy attitude regarding fashion - just because you aren't a certain size doesn't mean you can't rock the latest trends!

Select an LBD based on your age
01 December 2010

If there is one item that all women have in their closets, it's the little black dress. This timeless garment is suitable for a wide variety of occasions and is available in a limitless amount of styles. However, ladies may want to choose the silhouette of their LBD based on their age.

According to Harper's Bazaar, gals in their 20s look best in a sculptural shift while those in their 30s can rock black semi-formal dresses that feature lace and embellishments. Meanwhile, 40-year-old women should feel free to embrace sparkle and slip on a sequined garment.

Instead of concentrating on the piece's material, ladies in their 50s should pay attention to the length of the skirt. The publication reports that a dress that falls below the knee is ideal.

Finally, the magazine recommends that those in their 60s should "focus on silhouettes with feminine shapes," while women who are above 70 should "work in a number that's rich in texture."

Little black dresses are a staple of most gals' wardrobes. Look for a piece that's age-appropriate and you'll be prepared for any event that comes your way.

Match your veil to your wedding dress' silhouette
01 December 2010

When putting together your wedding day ensemble, much attention is paid to the dress. However, there is one important element that should not be ignored - your veil! This special headpiece can turn any white gown into a true wedding dress.

But with the wide variety of veils available, which one is right for you? Use your gown as a guide and select a veil that complements the silhouette to create a truly breathtaking wedding day getup.

According to Brides magazine, a cathedral veil features a long train that cascades at least 10 feet from the headpiece. This regal veil is best paired with a princess-style ball gown.

A flyaway veil is the complete opposite - a short, multi-layered piece that falls to your shoulders and is retro, fun and flirty. The publication recommends wearing this veil with a '50s-style garment, such as an item with an off-the-shoulder bodice and a slightly poufy skirt.

A structured strapless wedding dress, however, may look best coupled with a waterfall veil, which is short in the front and gets longer as it flows down your back - the magazine reports that the veil's fluid detail will soften the stiff silhouette.

Shopping advice from InStyle magazine
01 December 2010

While many women enjoy searching for clothes and accessories, some gals get overwhelmed by the idea of putting outfits together. Luckily, the ladies at InStyle magazine recently shared some insight regarding the wonderful world of shopping.

"I don't buy super-trendy things. I look for garments I can wear for several seasons," market director Erin Sumwalt told the publication. "If I purchase a print, it's never one that's recognizable as being from a...specific season. Instead, I pick subtle patterns."

Of course, that doesn't mean that pieces should be plain. Market editor Dana Avidan recommends selecting items that contain a little something extra.

"[I look] for little details - embellished pockets, not plain - print shoes, not solid," Avidan told the publication. "We're getting into the holidays, and it's nice to have things that feel special."

But ladies who are about to put on a formal dress may want to step into a different garment first.

"I always put on a slip if I'm in a dress or skirt," Sumwalt added. "Having something luxurious next to your skin just feels good."
