Carmen Electra shows off a fuzzy little black dress
30 January 2011

The world has been in love with Carmen Electra for years now, and for good reason. Aside from being drop-dead gorgeous and having a seemingly carefree attitude, the woman knows how to pick out ideal dresses to show off at red carpet events.

This was never the more apparent than when the beauty made an appearance at an event at Tao Nightclub in Las Vegas wearing a unique take on the little black dress. Her creation, which featured long-sleeves and a short hemline, seemed especially fitting for the star-studded evening.

While this description alone may give the impression that Carmen's ensemble was pretty standard, it turns out that's hardly the case. In fact, the item was stitched together from a fabulous fuzzy fabric!

While we're not sure if this material would be great for prom dresses, ladies who have a winter affair coming up and still haven't ordered a creation may want to think about showing off a similar piece. Complement the outfit with a pair of knee-high boots like Carmen and you're bound to look unbelievable.

Anna Wintour shows off an animal-print formal dress
30 January 2011

The devil may wear Prada, but it looks as though she has a penchant for animal print formal dresses as well. In fact, Anna Wintour, editrix of Vogue Magazine and supposed snippy fashionista, was photographed arriving at a dinner in a piece with detailing somewhere in between a zebra and a leopard print.

Still, Anna's dress remained as stunning and elegant as she. The creation, which featured long sleeves and fell to her knees, was flowy and seemed super comfortable. The successful lady also paired the ensemble with a fetching pair of beautiful black boots.

Not so surprisingly, Wintour accessorized like a pro by showing off a beautiful beaded necklace. And, in usual fashion, she was rocking her usual bob hairdo, proving that although she embraces a wide variety of different ensembles, her tresses may never change.

With such great success, we have a feeling Anna will be working it in incredible formal dresses for years to come. We can't wait to see what noteworthy piece she rocks next!

Cheryl Cole looks oh-so-hot in a little black dress
29 January 2011

If there's one guy out there kicking himself at the moment, it's Ashley Cole. The British footballer saw his marriage to Girls Aloud chanteuse Cheryl Cole crumble after he had multiple affairs on the sly.

Although the former flames just finalized their divorce, it doesn't look like Cheryl is shedding too many tears over it. In fact, the drop-dead gorgeous woman recently stepped out at an event with 1000-watt smile on her face that seemed to subtly say "See Ashley? You made the biggest mistake of your life!"

If there was anything that backed up this idea, it was Cheryl's ensemble. Her getup, which fell right to her knees, at first appeared to be nothing more than a little black dress.

However, when the lovely woman turned around, she proved that she knows how to wow a crowd. Her ensemble featured a super sexy strappy back, allowing her to look like a darling dominatrix diva. Meow!

To top it all off, Cheryl decided to throw on a pair red shows to prove she knows what she's doing. We have a feeling she'll have another special man by her side any day now.

White may be the new black
29 January 2011

Ladies who are currently searching for prom dresses and are still conflicted about a particular color may want to listen up. Even though black is the go-to shade when it comes to formal wear, it turns out there may be brighter hues on the horizon.

In fact, celebrity stylist and fashion know-it-all Rachel Zoe explains that designers are doing a 180 and using white to feel inspired when putting together their creations.

"This season, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction with white taking center stage as the most sought-after shade," she wrote on her blog.

Women who have yet to purchase a gown for the most important event of their high school careers may want to think about showing off this shade. Considering alabaster is mostly reserved for wedding dresses and communions, it's likely you'll be the most fetching girl in the room.

And, if you're looking to turn even more heads, why not show off a white piece made from shimmery fabric? Sparkle in the lights and sway to the music all night long.

Smooth sailing for Mo'Nique at the Academy Award nominations event
28 January 2011

Mo'Nique may be a talented comedienne, but the gorgeous woman has proven to the world she has a dramatic side as well. In fact, it was less than a year ago that the performer took home an Academy Award for her performance in the critically-acclaimed drama Precious.

In addition to her acting chops, it turns out Mo'Nique takes her red carpet ensembles extremely serious as well. The star was spotted at the 83rd Oscar nominations announcement showing off a gorgeous turquoise getup, and we'd like to applaud her for her decision.

While many women tend to believe that party dresses are a dime a dozen these days, the beautiful lady proved otherwise. In fact, the color of her ensemble - a hue that resembled the crystal-clear Caribbean ocean - will be etched in our minds for a while.

In addition, Monique's appearance was memorable for an entirely different reason - her seemingly smooth legs! It was just last year that she stepped out at the Golden Globe Awards after failing to shave.

Add color to your ensemble and feel fantastic during the winter
28 January 2011

Women may be inclined to show off evening dresses created from gloomier shades during the winter months, but ladies may want to try otherwise. It doesn't take a genius to know that adding color to an outfit can serve as a pick-me-up for an ensemble and lift one's spirits.

StyleList.com spoke with fashion know-it-all and celebrity stylist Lindsay Albanese to get the inside scoop on how to make this work. First and foremost, women should try to infuse vibrant hues into their getup with eye-catching accessories.

The expert recommends starting with your jewelry. A brightly-colored cocktail ring or an adorable belt will turn a little black dress into something unforgettable. Also, ladies should never underestimate the power of hats.

No matter what, it appears as though Albanese is completely gung-ho for indulging in this fashion pointer.

"Color adds life and excitement to an outfit" she told the news outlet. "It always draws the eye and makes things more interesting."

How to mix and match prints
27 January 2011

Every girl has a favorite print. Whether it's a pair of leopard pumps or plaid plants that suit your fancy, it's safe to say there's usually one design out there that piques a girl's interest.

Of course, every once in a while, a gal wants to show off two distinct patterns together. While this is often easier said than done, Refinery29.com had some ideas about how to make this work.

First and foremost, ladies should begin by finding a few standout pin-stripe pieces to throw on over their best semi-formal dresses.

"One of the easiest starting-off points is to mix your stripes," the news source reports. "A thin-striped cardigan thrown over a thicker-striped tank is effortless, but looks super-thoughtful."

While this pointer may not work for prom dresses, it's easy to infuse these tips into creations that are ideal for casual parties and low-key events. After all, no-frills affairs usually provide the most opportune moments to take chances.

Of course, don't be afraid to mix and match accessories as well. A zebra print clutch carried around while showing off polka-dotted tights will certainly turn heads!

Throw a cashmere shawl over a semi-formal dress and you can't go wrong
26 January 2011

If there's one material that can do no wrong, it's cashmere. And while the soft and fuzzy fabric looks fabulous during the winter, believe it or not, it can be shown off during the warmer months as well.

In fact, StyleList.com spoke with some style experts, who all agreed that yes, this wonderful type of wool is as versatile as it is beautiful.

"While cashmere may not be as warm as [heavier] wool, a lightweight cashmere cardigan is versatile enough to keep you cozy in winter, but will not stifle you on a chilly summer night," George Kotsiopoulos, co-host of E!'s Fashion Police With Joan Rivers, told the news outlet.

This is wonderful news, as an article of clothing designed from this fabric can be somewhat pricey! Still, women who purchase a cashmere shawl or sweater have the pleasure of knowing that it can be paired with formal dresses at all times of the year.

Mimi Wong, a sweater knit designer, obviously agrees with this notion.

"It is season-less and belongs in every wardrobe," she told the news provider.

Jennifer Love Hewitt at the BAFTA Awards: Baby's dress has got back
26 January 2011

Jennifer Love Hewitt is often criticized in the media for going from pin-thin to a curvaceous cutie, and we have a hard time understanding why. After all, the girl always looks incredible in the formal dresses she sports at events and she shows no sign of stopping her flawless appearances.

Hewitt hit another one out of the ballpark at an L.A. event for the BAFTA Awards, where she was rocking a white party dress that featured slivers of gorgeous silver.

Jennifer's getup was perfect for the tea party affair. Her piece, which featured a somewhat high neckline and a poofy skirt, embodied the Mad Men-style that seems to be all the rage now.

We also loved the actress' accessories - Hewitt chose to show off a gorgeous pair of nude pumps and keep a pink and white purse by her side. With such great taste in clothing, who needs to be a size two? Jen should just keep on keeping on and not let the gossipmongers get her down.

Match your nail polish to your nude semi-formal dress
25 January 2011

If there's one itty-bitty detail that can top off a look, it's the right nail polish. Whether you're headed to a glitzy affair in a stunning formal dress or merely shopping with your gal pals, having a perfect mani-pedi can allow you to appear fantastic and feel incredible.

Refinery29.com recently gave quite an interesting pointer to gals who are looking to rock a nude semi-formal dress at an upcoming event - show off neutral nail polish as well. And while this seems redundant - after all, our nails have no color to begin with - they insist it's bound to be a hit.

"Nude-as-naked nails look refreshingly demure, yet provocative," the news source reports. "Make sure your polish comes in a high-gloss formula so you don't end up looking like you have mannequin hands."

Ladies who want their hands to sparkle even further may want to think about applying a top coast that shimmers. Complement your ensemble with a pair of gorgeous heels, an adorable clutch and just the right jewelry, and you're guaranteed to make a lasting impression.

Camel and coral: A winning color combination
25 January 2011

While it may be snowing across much of the country, it's never too cold to embrace the colors of the desert. Instead of keeping your coral-hued garments in the closet until summer rolls around, wear the tone with beige for an ensemble that looks great year-round.

"Coral pairs perfectly with the beige shades that are popular right now," O magazine's creative director, Adam Glassman, told the publication.

Sport a taupe trench coat over a coral semi-formal dress for a get-up that's both sunny and seasonably appropriate. The magazine suggests a faux leather, single-breasted jacked for a super-sexy look.

If you are wary about wearing a shade as bold as coral in the winter, there are a few ways to subtly incorporate it into your look. Infuse the pink hue into your wardrobe with your jewelry - coral bracelet or cocktail ring will add a touch of color to a beige garment.

You can also rock a patterned material that features just a touch of the bright hue.

"Flashes of pink perk up a dark print," the news source recommends.

Rachel McAdams shows off a fantastic green party dress
23 January 2011

It's safe to say that Rachel McAdams has proven she can effortlessly ease into any part she takes on. From the catty Regina George in Mean Girls to Allie, the hopeless romantic in The Notebook, it seems as though the talented lady can handle all acting challenges that comes her way.

Not so surprisingly, McAdams has proven she's as versatile with her wardrobe as she is with her screen roles. And although we've seen the girl in a number of fancy creations within the past few months, McAdams decided to take her getup down a notch at the Morning Glory photocall in Madrid.

Still, there's no denying that Rachel looked nothing short of radiant in her semi-formal dress. The forest green piece, which featured a high neckline but still allowed her to show off her slim arms, was perfect for the casual affair.

In addition, Rachel appropriately paired her dress with a bold pair of black strappy heels. The pumps gave the girl some height and helped her to look chic at a no-frills gathering.

Of course, we have a feeling the Wedding Crashers star will be showing off a long, flowy number sometime in the near future. After all, her career is on fire!

Sofia Vergara chats about her body shape
23 January 2011

When it comes to television stars, is there anyone hotter than Sofia Vergara? The lovely Latina is undeniably as gorgeous as she is talented, and lately is seems as though the world is obsessed with learning more about the actress.

The Modern Family star spoke with Access Hollywood earlier this year and admitted that her bodacious bod sometimes poses a problem for finding the perfect semi-formal dress.

"I think because of the shape of my body I have learned to accept that I cannot just wear anything that is [in] fashion because…not everything, you know, fits," she told the news program.

While this sounds somewhat ridiculous, women around the world should take comfort in knowing that even super-famous celebrities have trouble finding the ideal formal dress. And although most A-listers look magnificent on the red carpet, it's likely they spent a good amount of time shopping.

So, if you still haven't uncovered your dream gown for prom, don't get discouraged. If at first you don't succeed, shop, shop again!

Yes, even celebrities make mistakes with their formal dresses
20 January 2011

There were an endless number of fantastic gowns spotted at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, and not so surprisingly, an array of cringe-worthy items were shown off as well. Here are some misses that we believe deserve as much attention as the hits.

First, there was Michelle Williams. While the Blue Valentine star usually dresses like a pro for big events (case in point: her incredible canary yellow formal dress she wore at the 2006 Oscars), her getup for this ceremony elicited two solid thumbs down. The creation, which featured a number of daisies stitched into the piece, looked more like wallpaper than something wonderful.

And who can forget Helena Bonham Carter's absolutely bizarre ensemble? Aside from sporting an insane hairdo and mismatched shoes, the woman's dress was completely out there.

Finally, there was Julianne Moore, whose fuchsia dress was a little too over-the-top for our tastes. Her one-shoulder getup featured a super-puffy sleeve and left something to be desired.

Stars often help us to decide what to wear, but once in a while, they can clue us in on what not to! We give thanks to these lovely ladies for allowing us to narrow down the choices.

Angelina Jolie shows off a gorgeous green formal dress
20 January 2011

It's safe to say that Angelina Jolie elicits a number of different reactions when one mentions her name - Brad Pitt, her humanitarian work or even her six children are just some of the images that spring to mind. Of course, those concerned with red carpet attire most likely remember the woman for showing off black ensembles like it's her job.

Well, it looks as though The Tourist star took a leap of faith and decided to add a splash of color into her life. In fact, Jolie stepped out at this year's Golden Globe Awards in a bright green formal dress that allowed her to shine.

Jolie's dress was as unforgettable as it was vibrant. The long-sleeve piece, which was made from gorgeous green fabric, featured sparkles that shimmered in the paparazzi lights.

We have to commend Angelina - the woman took a chance on something new and succeeded with flying colors. Ladies who are hesitant to break out of their comfort zone may want to take a cue from the A-lister and go for something fresh and exciting. After all, fashion is about taking chances!

Natalie Portman wears pink and red at the Golden Globe Awards
20 January 2011

There were scores of incredible gowns shown off at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, but we believe there was truly one standout winner - Natalie Portman. The glowing mom-to-be stepped out in a simple but unforgettable creation that highlighted how well pink and red work together, and we want to thank her for it.

Portman was dressed in a gorgeous strapless dress that was stitched together from sexy silky fabric. The piece allowed the pregnant performer to move freely and show off her ever-growing belly with ease.

However, there was one incredible feature to her getup - a red flower emblazoned on the bodice. The detail was able to remind all ladies out there that these two hues appear incredibly feminine while worn at the same time.

Girls still looking for their prom gown may want to take a cue from Portman and show off a pink and red formal creation. Or, better yet, find a semi-formal dress fashioned from these two colors and wear it on Valentine's Day. You're bound to look sensational on the most romantic day of the year.

Marie Claire extracts advice from Coco Chanel's legacy
18 January 2011

It's undeniable that one of the world's most esteemed designers was Coco Chanel. While the woman, who famously advised women to remove the last accessory they put on before leaving the house, may no longer be around today, Marie Claire magazine swears you can still look to the late fashion icon for some fashion pointers.

To appear your best, pick pieces in which you feel confident, whether it's a flowing semi-formal dress or a pair of perfectly fitting jeans.

"Apply the Chanel adage, 'Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it's not luxury,' to eveningwear in loose fits with high polish," the publication advises.

When selecting your outerwear, feel free to play with androgynous pieces, such as a masculine overcoat that features explicitly feminine detail.

And of course, it wouldn't be Chanel-style advice without a brief note about over-accessorizing.

"Treat trimmed pockets and collars as accessories unto themselves - leave the jewelry at home," the news source suggests. If you are rocking a highly embellished semi-formal dress, don't sport additional bling, as you may complicate your ensemble.

Jennifer Hudson is addicted to shopping!
18 January 2011

Few have had the impressive year that Jennifer Hudson has had. The former American Idol contestant recently dropped a ton of weight - she went from a size 16 to a size 4 - and it seems that Hudson is now fulling embracing her new figure.

"I have a serious shopping problem now," the talented vocalist told ShowbizSpy.com. "Each city we go to, my suitcase won't hold my new clothes, so we have to box them up and ship them home. Then I get back and want to try on everything I bought, so clothes are just everywhere."

However, it seems that Hudson's shopping addiction is leading her to find creative ways to put away her new semi-formal dresses and shoes.

"It got to a point where I could barely get in my bedroom. And when did I realize I had a problem? Well, my bed is a canopy. I had nowhere else to throw the clothes. So I threw them on top of the canopy!" she added.

And from her recent appearances, we hope that Hudson keeps shopping! Last month, the songstress looked stunning in form-fitting black velvet number that featured elegant draping and showed off her killer legs.

How to dress an athletic physique
18 January 2011

Now that the New Year is here, many women may be picking up a gym membership to honor a resolution. And while working out can lead to a leaner physique, some ladies may add muscle to their frame as well. However, dressing for an athletic build can be a bit tricky.

"The key to getting your fashion correct has to do with the harmony and balance of three key elements: silhouette, proportion and fit," fashion guru Tim Gunn wrote in Marie Claire magazine.

If you want your muscular figure to retain its womanly appeal, you may want to look for a silhouette that enhances your curves.

"If you choose a dress, I recommend wrap styles because they can be adjusted to accommodate the particulars of your shape, and they're feminizing too," Gunn wrote.

The fashion expert also warns athletically built women to steer clear of menswear, boxy and oversize styles, as the proportion and fit aren't as flattering.

Regardless of your shape, if you are looking for a formal dress, get online and start your search early - you'll want to leave ample time for processing and delivery.

Gold is the head-turning color of the season
18 January 2011

Gals who want to get noticed often opt for red ensembles - the crimson hue is guaranteed to turn heads. However, when every woman shows up in similar shades, each lady is likely to feel a little less eye-catching.

Instead of choosing scarlet the next time you want a little more attention, why not go for a gold semi-formal dress?

"The value of gold is on the rise - and not without reason. Both finance and fashion types delight in the universally flattering glow," Marie Claire magazine reports. "While 24-karat baubles and bangles have long been a jewelry box standby, the classic metallic is currently enjoying a ready-to-wear Renaissance."

The publication suggests sporting a sparkly minidress or a puffer vest. However, you should avoid wearing too much gold. If you are rocking a metallic getup, wear minimal jewelry and neutral-colored accessories.

You should also refrain from applying cosmetics that contain too much shimmer. Opt for a lip gloss with a subtle sheen or a matte eyeshadow for a sultry, smoky eye.

Tips to efficient packing
18 January 2011

Whether you are packing for a ski trip or a cruise around the Bahamas, winter is a time many people choose to travel. And while some women may be seasoned pros at packing, other gals may need a bit of guidance when preparing for a getaway.

When picking semi-formal dresses to pack for a trip, ladies may want to pay attention to fabric.

"Jersey is light and wrinkle-resistant," reports InStyle magazine. This makes it the perfect material to travel with - it won't crease and it will take up minimal room in your suitcase.

Any piece that can serve more than one purpose is ideal for traveling. If you are jet-setting to a warm locale, consider garments that look great for a night out but can double as a beach cover-up. Ladies gearing up for trip to a cooler climate may want to look for a cozy sweater dress that can be a comfy cardigan as well as belted and worn with leggings.

Additionally, you may want to consider a few items that will come in handy when getting dressed. According to the publication, ladies should travel with deodorant remover sheets, clothing tape and lint removers to ensure a flawless-looking ensemble anywhere.

How to look like Audrey Hepburn
18 January 2011

While her heyday may have been in the 1950's, Audrey Hepburn's classic beauty is still as iconic as ever. Girls looking for the perfect prom ensemble may want to look to Hepburn for inspiration - her feminine, elegant style is young and fresh, yet effortlessly timeless.

When shopping for a prom dress, look for an item that features a full, flouncy skirt. However, InStyle warns that you may want a bit of help to achieve the fullest silhouette possible.

"Create extra volume in the skirt by putting a petticoat (yes, really) underneath," the magazine recommends.

Girls can also opt for the classic Breakfast at Tiffany's look and wear a long black dress and pearls. Of course, no Hepburn-inspired getup is complete without the right accessories.

"Add some opera length gloves...a chic and unexpected alternative to bracelets," the news source advises. "A sparkling barrette, crimson lips and silver shoes provide dramatic accents."

Ladies looking for the perfect Audrey-like prom dress should start shopping online early, as processing and shipping times can vary. Once your dress arrives, pick out the ideal accents and get ready for one of the most magical nights of your life!

The best accessories to keep in your closet
18 January 2011

With hot trends constantly emerging, it's always a great idea to shop for a brand new semi-formal dress for a big event. However, there are a few accessories you may want to always have on hand, as they look great with a variety of ever-changing looks.

"It's nice to have a pair of decorated kitten heels," stylist Cristina Ehrlich told InStyle magazine. "They make your ensemble seem dressier, and the tiny heel transitions easily from day to night."

A black leather purse is another go-to accessory to keep on hand. Select one without too much hardware (so you can sport it whether you are wearing silver or gold jewelery) and made of a weathered leather that looks tough enough for winter but soft enough for summer.

Finally, while diamonds may be a girl's best friend, it seems that there is another stone to keep on hand as well.

"Pearls - earrings or a necklace - are my favorite accent. They're feminine and timeless and they add a personal touch," Ehrlich added.

How to wear feathers
18 January 2011

Some trends that look fantastic on the runway may seem difficult to pull off in everyday life. One such fad is feathers - while this may seem nearly impossible to embrace without appearing too flamboyant, InStyle fashion director Cindy Weber Cleary swears it's possible, and easy!

"Feathers are glamorous in a lighthearted way. Think of them as a soft, chic alternative to the usual...sparkles," she writes. "They are unabashedly feminine - and you don't need a lot of them to make a statement."

Instead of wearing a feather-covered piece, select a semi-formal dress that boasts a few strategically placed plumes for embellishment, such as at the shoulder or by the hemline. You can also incorporate this trend into your accessories. Enhance your little black dress with a headband, purse or pair of heels adorned with feathers.

If you decide to embrace this trend, leave the rest of your get-up as simple as possible.

"Say no to snakeskin, ostrich-skin and lizard-skin accessories when wearing feathers," Weber Cleary advises in the news source.

Trust us, feathers aren't just for the birds. Adding a few to your ensemble can create a flirty and charming look with just a touch of whimsy.

Carrie Underwood opens up about her style philosophy
18 January 2011

There are few celebrities as charming as Carrie Underwood. The beautiful American Idol winner and certified country superstar always seems to have a smile on her face and regularly looks like a million bucks. So what's the secret to her stellar style?

"People ask, 'What's your fashion secret?' Feel good! That goes for guys and girls," Underwood told InStyle magazine. "I can be sexy and still be classy. I don't do outrageous outfits, and I never will...I love things that make me feel comfortable but aren't too tight or showing too much cleavage."

However, now and then the country crooner will rock a corset-style formal dress, noting that the particular silhouette will "smooth you out."

When choosing what to wear, it seems that Underwood thinks about what makes her feel her best, not what others will say.

"It just makes me mad to see someone blasted for what she wore, because maybe she looked at herself in the mirror and said, 'I feel hot,'" Underwood added. "Fashion, to me, is what makes you feel awesome."

What to wear if you have thin legs
18 January 2011

It seems that the grass is always greener on the other side - many women with full figures ache to be thinner while slim ladies often yearn for more curves. However, instead of wishing for a different body type, gals can dress to flatter the physiques they were given.

While many women want thinner thighs, ladies with skinny legs can sometimes be self-conscious showing off their stems. According to fashion expert Tim Gunn, you don't have to be sentenced to a life of pants and long skirts. In fact, you can wear a semi-formal dress confidently as long as you pick the right silhouette.

"Wear your skirts to the knee," Gunn wrote in Marie Claire magazine. "If you wear them higher, then you exacerbate the thinness of your legs. If you wear them longer, then you risk looking dowdy and matronly."

Gunn even offered advice on the perfect footwear if you are embarrassed by skinny stems.

"Boots are very in this season, and you're lucky enough to be able to wear any of the on-trend styles," he wrote. "Many women's calves are too wide to accommodate high boots. Enjoy!"

Style advice from a DJ
18 January 2011

While it can be fun getting style tips from celebrities and their team of experts, sometimes it's just as beneficial to get some advice from real women. Recently, DJ Chelsea Leyland spoke to Marie Claire about her fashion philosophy.

"Don't think of black as basic," Leyland told the news source. "To me, it's the most exciting color. It brings out who you are more than any other color." For her photoshoot in the publication, she rocked a poofy black semi-formal dress and personalized it with military boots and stacks of silver bangles.

Leyland was also photographed wearing a black tank, a gray miniskirt and a pair of killer zebra-print heels. Though she spends hours on her feet, the beautiful woman said that she rarely sets foot outside of the house without stylish stilettos.

Gals can also reinvent an outfit or give new life to an old LBD by pairing pieces with different accessories.

"I find that adding cool tights or a different jacket is the easiest way to change up a look," she added.

Jewelry can make an outfit
18 January 2011

While accessories are often afterthoughts, they can also be the starting point of a great ensemble. In fact, if you have a necklace or bracelet you really like, you may want to put it on before you select a semi-formal dress.

"When I get dressed, I'll start with an accessory, then put a look together very quickly," jewelry designer Ranjana Khan told Marie Claire magazine. "You can't be afraid of big, bold pieces. Just don't think so much about it. Look in the mirror, and if you're happy with the end result, head out the door."

Khan also advises women not to be afraid of wearing formal dresses in the daytime, as long as they are paired with casual accessories.

"I dress to please me. I like wearing evening in the daytime. The trick is to incorporate at least one dressed-down piece," Khan told the publication. "For instance, I'll wear a full-on embroidered, metal-studded skirt with a tank that's a sleep shirt. The tank washes down the skirt but still allows it to dance and sing."

How to look hot in the cold
18 January 2011

It can be tricky to get dressed for a night out during the wintertime, as you'll likely want pieces that are stylish but keep you warm. While this can be a tricky line to walk, TheFrisky.com recently shared some tips to looking hot in the coldest of months.

"A black sheath dress can be very versatile. By day, you can wear a blazer or cardigan (or be a fashion insider and wear both), and at night, just throw on some sparkly heels," the news source advised.

Of course, even a long-sleeved semi-formal dress may need a little more warmth. According to the website, nothing says chic like expertly layered pieces. When wearing multiple items, however, opt for thin fabrics to avoid adding unnecessary heft and select one garment to be the statement piece, or focal point, of your ensemble.

The news provider also listed the top five pieces necessary for a super stylish winter wardrobe. This season, soft items seem to be the way to go - shearling boots topped the list, followed by cashmere sweaters, faux-fur items, knit skirt and a shawl-collar coats.

Embrace the popular ballerina trend
17 January 2011

Thanks to the critical acclaim and popularity of Black Swan, there is one trend that is particularly hot right now - the ballerina look. And while some women may worry that this is a style best left on the stage, it can actually translate exceptionally well into everyday life.

When looking for a formal dress that pays homage to this idea, select a garment made of tulle to mimic ballerinas' iconic tutus. Don't worry about showing too much skin - when the fabric is draped and gathered, it can become opaque. Pair the item with ballet flats or heels with ribbons that tie around your ankle.

Of course, the right hairstyle is just as important in recreating this look as finding the perfect dress. Channel your inner ballerina and slick your hair back in an impeccable bun.

"No matter where the stars are placing their neatly pulled-back buns, the style is totally en pointe right now," InStyle magazine reports. For a fun night out, consider piling your hair atop your head, while a low bun is perfect for a more elegant affair.

The perfect dress to flatter a fuller figure
17 January 2011

Finding a dress that fits your curves perfectly is of the utmost importance. A well-fitted dress can help you to look your best and boost your self-confidence. But whether you are shopping for a prom dress or a wedding gown, it can be difficult to find a garment that flatters your figure.

However, finding the perfect formal dress for a fuller-form isn't impossible, especially with some expert tips.

"We've found that gown silhouettes such as Grecian or Empire waist in silk chiffon flatter almost all body types," industry experts Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig told InStyle magazine. "Soft draping and strategically placed embellishments also draw the eye to those pretty, feminine details."

There's no reason you can't have fun with color. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone, or opt for a show-stopping hue like red or magenta.

Of course, when shopping for a big event, like prom, it's imperative to get an early start, as you'll want time to figure out how to best style the dress - remember, accessories and shapewear can make or break a look.

Sarah Harding talks about her wedding dress
16 January 2011

Sometimes celebrities give great wedding dress advice, while others find themselves spewing silly recommendations. We are keen to believe that Girls Aloud member Sarah Harding falls into the latter category.

The blonde beauty, who just got engaged to her DJ boyfriend Tom Crane, spoke with Now Magazine about some possible details for her wedding attire.

"Sometimes you have to suffer for fashion...I'd say Cheryl [Cole] suffered on her wedding day in that tight dress," she told the news outlet, referring to her band mate's 2006 marital shindig to footballer Ashley Cole.

While we're sure Harding means well, we'd have to disagree! Although every woman wants to look incredible on her all-important day, comfort is vital as well. After all, you don't want to be cringing while getting down on the dance floor.

In order to prevent such a catastrophe from happening, we recommend shopping as soon as possible. Secure the wedding dress of your dreams early on in the process and you'll be able to relax and have a blast while coordinating the rest of your affair.

Rachel Zoe's husband reminisces about their first meeting
16 January 2011

While younger fashionistas have the freedom of filling their closets with an endless array of shoes and scattering their favorite clothing all over their apartment, married ladies have to consider their husbands' space, too. Of course, Rachel Zoe's hubby, Rodger Berman, may be in an entirely different ballgame.

The investment banker recently spoke with Harper's Bazaar about his spouse's obsession with fancy-schmancy attire.

"I vividly remember the first time I saw her, wearing a tight black minidress, high-heeled pumps, stick-straight hair, and big red lips covered in M.A.C. Chili lipstick," he told the news outlet. "She was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. I quickly learned that she also had more clothes than any woman I had ever seen."

Women who are as fascinated with fashion as Rachel may want to remember that a little organization goes a long way. Closets that designate areas for semi-formal dresses, shoes and bags can lead to a cleaner bedroom and provide peace of mind.

And, remember - when you meet the man of your dreams, he'll probably appreciate having his own closet space too!

Ditch the standard black bag in order to spice up a semi-formal dress
16 January 2011

Sometimes all it takes is one little accessory to make an outfit pop. From bright yellow shoes to a gargantuan statement necklace, making an impact at a special soiree often happens from solidifying the right details.

It appears as though the fashion experts at Refinery29.com agree with this notion. And, their advice may be a long time coming - ditch the standard black bag and go for something with a little color.

"We love a great basic as much as anyone, but this winter, we're breaking out of our rut and switching mom's classic black tote for something a whole lot juicier," the expert at the news outlet reports.

Ladies who are looking to give their simple semi-formal dress a pick-me-up may especially want to heed this advice. Showing off a sequined pocketbook or hitting the clubs with a vibrant-colored clutch may be all you need to stand out in a sea of partygoers and make sure all eyes land on you.

Seth Rogen's fiancé looks fabulous in fuchsia
13 January 2011

Seth Rogen may be known as a funnyman, but it looks like he's serious when it comes to romance. The curly-haired cutie just proposed to his long-term girlfriend, Lauren Miller, and the two are officially aisle-bound.

The lovebirds recently stepped out at the premiere of Rogen's latest film, The Green Hornet, and we can see why he's incredibly smitten with the girl. After all, she's not only gorgeous, but she certainly knows how to pick out a stunning semi-formal dress.

While the cut of Miller's getup was relatively standard, there was one reason why she stood out in the sea of starlets - its color. The piece was fashioned from silky fuchsia material that proved that every woman out there can look incredible in some shade of pink.

Girls who are searching for a dress for prom and are still conflicted about what to wear at their all-important event may want to take a cue from the lovely Lauren and show off a gown of this color. Whether your high school holds the event in their gymnasium or you're headed to a ritzy catering hall, this hue can do no wrong.

Nicole Richie talks about fashion
13 January 2011

If there's one trendsetter who should be noted for her fashion choices, it's Nicole Richie. The former BFF of Paris Hilton and now glowing mom-of-two has been celebrated in the media for her keen sense of style and unabashed love of unique attire.

Richie graces the cover of the February 2011 issue of Lucky Magazine in a pretty peach and deep pink ensemble, looking both flawless and feminine. However, the lovely lady admits that her wardrobe tends to be all over the map.

"To me, fashion is about fun," she told the news outlet. "I've dyed my hair purple, and I dyed my hair green, and I went through a Punky Brewster phase, a preppy phase, a goth phase a girly phase a grunge phase…I'm sure my style won't stop here."

Richie may believe that she's embraced a multitude of styles, but it's safe to say the woman was nothing short of girly at her recent wedding to Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden. Her long-sleeve gown featured lacy material, a tight-fitting bodice, and a poofy, princess-style skirt!

Wear a houndstooth semi-formal dress and look incredible
11 January 2011

Houndstooth - it's not just for 80s parties anymore. According to StyleList.com, a variety of fashion authorities agree that girls who are looking to make an impression in a pretty patterned formal dress should not discount this design.

"I guess you can say houndstooth is one of those timeless, recognizable patterns," clothing guru Mondo Guerra told the news outlet. "In the past, we have seen this intriguing pattern mostly in woven fabrics, such as wool, but now, with its popularity, we are seeing it as a print."

Girls who are having trouble finding houndstooth dresses may want to think about incorporating it into their outerwear. A jacket or coat stitched together with these marvelous markings or even a scarf worn over a solid colored ensemble will look absolutely fabulous at events both big and small.

Remember, there are only a few months left of the winter, and this design is perfect for the colder seasons. Wear it and look sensational.

Helen Mirren slips into an ideal mother-of-the-bride dress
11 January 2011

Mothers-of-the-bride around the world take note - although Helen Mirren does not have a daughter who is wedding planning at the moment, the Oscar-winning actress stepped out in a piece that would be perfect for ladies who do.

While Mirren tends to nail every one of her red carpet appearances, we think her latest get-up deserves a notable mention. The 65-year-old stunner was dressed in a perfect purple formal dress that showcased her curves and made her look at least 15 years younger.

Another notable facet of Mirren's creation? The dress' mermaid cut. Once reserved for brides and Academy Award attendees, Helen reminded the world that this detail can be worn by women of all ages.

Mothers-of-the-bride who have a bangin' bod and want to show it off loud and proud at their daughters' weddings may want to consider a mermaid silhouette such as Helen's. Of course, make sure you check with your baby before having your heart set on such a style - if her wedding dress features this cut, you'll likely have to choose something else!

Natalie Portman shows off an unforgettable semi-formal dress
11 January 2011

Natalie Portman recently announced that she's expecting her first child with fiancé Benjamin Millepied, and the actress is already glowing. The Black Swan star stepped out at the Palm Springs Film Festival in a semi-formal dress that showcased her flawless beauty - and also highlighted her growing baby bump.

Portman's getup was as unique as it was ideal. The black and white creation featured sheer sleeves, which allowed the mom-to-be to embrace her sexiness, and material that draped over her body, giving her burgeoning belly room to breathe.

However, it was the top of Portman's ensemble that truly wooed us, as it featured a gorgeous gold studded collar. The look screamed tuxedo-chic and went along perfectly with her slick, sexy hairdo.

While we're not sure if a detail such as this would be perfect for prom, it's safe to say this may work on a formal dress for another, more casual affair. Rock a collar, or even throw a tie on over a black and white ensemble.

Orange may be the perfect bridesmaid dress color for late summer weddings
11 January 2011

If there's one color that is often overlooked while planning a wedding, it's orange. Yes, the tangerine hue isn't always the shade of choice for formal dresses and gorgeous gowns, but there's no denying it can turn heads in an instant.

Refinery29.com recently emphasized that this color will be rearing its head once the warmer weather is here. Their prediction is based on a number of ensembles that were shown on the catwalks.

"The fashion universe loves orange, and this spring 2011, it sprung up in a bushel of juicy hues like this mouth-watering persimmon shade, which we can't get enough of," the news outlet reports.

For women who are in the midst of planning a late-summer wedding, this info may be just what they need to spice up their marital shindig. Orange bridesmaid dresses often work with a variety of colors, including white, yellow and pink.

And, as luck would have it, honeysuckle just so happens to be the number one pick for the go-to shade of the year. Have your girls wear cantaloupe-colored dresses with a rosy sash and your photos are bound to look fantastic.

Yes, you can look cute in the winter
11 January 2011

It's freezing outside, which means that most fashionistas around the country have been forced to throw on their heaviest coats in order to stay toasty. Still, there are many ways for style mavens to look completely cute while out and about during the winter.

Glamour.com recently gave some tips on how to make small adjustments to your ensemble in order to still look darling until the warmer weather is here.

"When it turns cold, keep your outfits cool by tucking into tights," the news outlet reports. They also added that "open-toe shoes get more use when paired with stockings and skirts and cropped bomber jackets."

Girls who are about to show off a semi-formal dress may want to remember this tip before heading to their big shindig. Sometimes a small detail, such as vibrant tights or noticeable shoes, can make or break a look.

Eye-catching accessories also allow a woman to garner attention while she's got that super hefty coat on! You never know who you'll want to impress while walking around town.

Selena Gomez shows off a gorgeous formal dress at the People's Choice Awards
10 January 2011

Selena Gomez may only be 18-years-old, but it's safe to say her style choices are wise beyond her years. The former star of Wizards of Waverly Place showed up to the People's Choice Awards in a gown fit for someone twice her age but still made her look fresh-faced and beautiful.

Selena picked a creation that allowed her to show off her gorgeous goods. Her cocktail dress, which fell at her mid-thigh, was fashioned from pastel pink material that was extremely girly.

In addition, the piece featured a ruffle that fell from her right shoulder to her left hip. This simple but unforgettable detail reminded the world that the girl doesn't kid around when it comes to her getups.

Gomez also looked fetching thanks to one other lovely detail - a bracelet. On her right wrist rested a super sexy silver piece of bling that sparkled in all the paparazzi lights. Perhaps this is the jewelry piece that her boyfriend, Justin Bieber, was rumored to have given her during the holidays?

AnnaLynne McCord looks beautiful in blue
10 January 2011

Every once in a while a color pops up on the red carpet that is too gorgeous to overlook. Such is the case with AnneLynne McCord's blue semi-formal dress that she sported at the People's Choice Awards, a star-studded event where celebrities truly brought out their A-game.

The stunning star of 90210 chose to wear a piece that seemed to be a brand new color of the rainbow. The creation, which wasn't quite cobalt blue and yet not exactly the shade of the ocean, was strangely somewhere in between.

And while some women may believe such a unique shade may be difficult to complement when it comes to shoes and accessories, the actress proved otherwise. In fact, she chose to throw on a simple pair of brown pumps, a choice that shaped up to be a success.

McCord also had something else to show off at this event - a brand new hair color! Her newly-dyed brown locks looked absolutely lovely with her getup, proving once again that she looks good in anything.

How to pick the right shapewear
10 January 2011

One key to looking flawless on a night out doesn't have to do with the semi-formal dress you choose to sport, but instead what you plan to wear underneath it. Style experts insist that the right shapewear can make any woman look like a million bucks, but selecting the right pieces can be tricky.

"Pick a slippery, shiny finish, rather than a matte one," stylist Annabel Tollman told Allure magazine. "Your clothes will glide over it."

Ladies should also avoid shapewear that is too tight. While common sense may indicate that a tight undergarment will better hold in love handles, Tollman reports that it will actually squeeze skin and cause bulges in other areas. Instead, rock items that fit comfortably and allow you to breathe and move with ease.

However, there may be times when shapewear can be more of a hindrance than a help, like when it's visible through the silhouette of your dress.

"It's far better to skip shapewear altogether than for anyone to see it," Tollman added.

Paula Abdul shows off the power of black and white ensembles
07 January 2011

Paula Abdul may not be one of the hosts of American Idol anymore, but her career shows no sign of slowing down. And, it looks as though her fashion choices are still up-to-speed as well.

The singer-dancer and television personality showed up to The Late Show with David Letterman wearing quite the fetching ensemble. And, it turns out that she only needed two colors to make a huge impression - black and white.

Abdul was looking pretty in a little black creation that allowed her to show off her tiny but toned bod. She also paired the cocktail dress with a perfect pair of black pumps and a gorgeous black clutch.

However, when Paula stepped out in the chilly New York weather, she made sure to throw on a gorgeous fur coat as well. The piece likely kept her incredibly warm while helping her look stylish in the dead of winter.

Women who are hoping to show off an LBD at an upcoming affair might want to think about pairing it with a beautiful white jacket as well. There's no harm in looking fashionable even before you make your entrance to the party!

Shania Twain's wedding dress - photos finally emerge
07 January 2011

Who cares how Shania Twain and her new hubby, Frèdèric Thièbaud, first locked eyes? Sure, the pair met after their first spouses had an affair with one another, leading to the breakup of both marriages. The wronged lovers found solace in one another's company, which later blossomed to love.

No matter what, Shania looked fabulous on her wedding day, and we couldn't be happier for her. Thankfully, some photos of the vocalist's gorgeous wedding dress have finally been released to the media.

First and foremost, let's talk about the gown's cut. Strapless and featuring an A-line silhouette, the piece allowed Shania to show off her super-toned upper body and highlight her flawless flat abs.

However, it looks as though Twain indulged in one of the most prevalent wedding trends of the past few years - a colored sash. A thick, black belt swept across her mid-section and brought her dress to another dimension.

Of course, Shania was pictured with a 1000-watt smile on her face, and who could blame her? With such a gorgeous dress and an amazing man by her side, it's likely she'll be beaming for years to come.

Daphne Guinness chats about her sense of style
03 January 2011

Sometimes fashionistas are born with the style gene, while others take years to develop their slick style sense. It appears as though Daphne Guinness, heiress to the esteemed beer company and celebrated clothing guru, falls into the latter category.

The gorgeous blonde recently spoke with the New York Times about how she preferred to hang with the lads, rather than play dress up with the girls, when she was growing up.

"I was overly serious and thoughtful, a real tomboy, always dressing up as a knight or a pirate or a red Indian," she told the news outlet. "If there is anything you can say about me, it's that I have not lost the imagination I had when I was 5 years old."

No matter what, it's apparent Guinness acquired the ability to pick out flawless formal dresses as she aged. In fact, the striking blonde recently stepped out at the British Fashion Awards in a stunning silver gown that was paired with an unforgettable, iridescent shawl.

What can we say? Some girls are born with style know-how, while others master it over time!

Rihanna wows the crowd with a stunning formal dress
03 January 2011

Rihanna has been making waves on the red carpet ever since she landed on the public radar years ago, but it was her latest creation that seriously had us in awe. The Umbrella singer stepped out at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas in a piece that featured red and see-through stripes!

Rihanna's gown appropriately covered up all the right places. In fact, the crimson portion of her getup fell directly on the necessary body parts - her bosom, derriere, and upper-thighs.

However, the pop singer's ensemble also had a number of peek-a-boo details, allowing the woman to show off the finer aspects of her hot bod. Her super-toned legs, flat midriff and lovely arms were all on display.

Women who are currently searching for the ideal prom dresses don't have to purchase a getup as daring as the gorgeous vocalist's. If you look hard enough, you're bound to find a gown that features surprising cutouts and sheer material that will still leave you feeling comfortable while on the arm of your beau.
