Let your inner tomboy shine, even in a dress
31 May 2011

Are you the kind of gal who would rather get muddy at soccer practice than doll yourself up for a formal event? Would you rather go for a jog or hang around the house in your jammies than don some pink, frilly number for a summer wedding? You're not alone - millions of tomboys like you aren't really sure where to start when it comes to getting all girly before a big event. But don't worry - you don't have to lose your boyish side in a sea of purple taffeta. Let Kelly Osbourne show you how to mix a boyish edge with plenty of glamor.

Kelly's not exactly known for her sweet, feminine side, although we'll admit that she's been looking very cute lately in that blonde bob. We love her new toned-down style, but we can appreciate that's she true to her outspoken, tomboy personality. She shows it in her fashion sense, too - like when she wore a lace-paneled minidress to the Tim Burton exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

Kelly accented the black-and-white dress with a shrunken leather jacket, glittery gold pumps and a sweet lavender-pink pout for the perfect mix of youthful girlishness and rough-and-ready tomboy.

Throw it into neutral
31 May 2011

If there's one big trend that you don't want to miss out on this spring, it's neutrals. With less than a month left in the season, it's time to embrace this style before we start seeing lots of bright, bold hues for summer! You can honor this trend with something small, like a canvas bag or a pair of nude pumps, or you can go all out - like Halle Berry did at the grand opening of Nikki Beach in Las Vegas.

The super-sexy actress kept it covered up in a taupe gown that featured a sash tied just below her right hip, as well as a draping neckline and a sheer overlay. The outfit was ideal for a day in the desert, with its light fabric, dusty coloring and effortlessly chic silhouette. The star paired it with some embellished sandals and her trademark pixie 'do, which we're sure kept her mighty cool in the Nevada heat.

As Halle proves, there's no need for any color if you really want to go neutral. No jewels or bright pumps to be found here - just neutrals through and through!

Have you been in a statuesque mood as of late?
31 May 2011

Summer is for freedom-loving fabrics and dresses which let the air flow around your body, but that doesn't mean you can't pick an airy frock which commands attention to your statuesque figure. Just ask Kirsten Dunst, who showed up to a Chanel fashion show in Istanbul looking like a veritable trophy in a classic white dress.

Recalling all the glamour of old-time Hollywood, Dunst stole the show in a slinky white knee-length number which featured three-quarter length bell sleeves and a tapered, pencil-skirt sensibility. Paired with gold metallic peep-toe pumps, classic ringlets and a glamorous red pout, Dunst looked as though she could have breezed just as easily through a 1940s fashion awards show as she undoubtedly did at the one she was attending.

This summer, look for light dresses in your favorite shade of ivory or off-white that combine body-hugging form with easy breezy breathable fabrics. Don't be afraid to pull out all the stops when you're clamoring to be the ultimate glamourpuss.

A summer's dream in white
31 May 2011

Lucy Liu has been appropriately dressing in black and white while out promoting her new film, Kung Fu Panda II. We've loved nearly every look she's stepped out in, but a particularly floaty Marchesa number is our absolute fave, and we think gals everywhere who are preparing for summer soirees and backyard weddings can learn a thing or two from this effortlessly chic style.

While a structured silhouette is always in style, summer is the time to experiment with gowns that may be a little less traditional. Frills and ruffles are the perfect way to feel girly this spring, and plenty of our favorite frocks are rockin' these flirty accents. For her part, Liu picked an ivory dress with lots of folds, ruffles and lace edges - similar in shape to the tuft of whipped cream that comes out the top of a cream puff. She smartly added a thin black belt to define her shape underneath all that summery fabric - a trick you should steal if you want to avoid looking like a crumpled up dinner napkin.

Liu completed her look with a pair of nude peep-toe pumps and a black clutch to bring out the belt. She left her long, dark hair cascading down her shoulders.

We love the thought of a deconstructed dress for a summertime get-together - it'll be much cooler than a stuffy, structured ensemble, and you'll look like something straight out of a midsummer night's dream.

Feel like a rock star in a dress with edge
31 May 2011

Are you a rock 'n' roll star? Whether you're the lead singer of a garage band, have serious air guitar skills or just have the attitude of a rock star, you know that musicians never do anything halfway. Sure, you could wear some frilly, floral, summery thing to your next formal event - but what would the rock 'n' roll goddesses think of you if you did? A gal who plays guitar has got to have a little edge, don't you think?

Courtney Love certainly agrees. Love, who's never been known for being girly and demure, wasn't about to kowtow to the powers-that-be when she attended the 2011 El Museo Del Barrio Gala in New York City this week. Instead of showing up in some pink, ruffly number, the Hole singer walked the red carpet in a sequined, beaded Roberto Cavalli gown that let her show off a few of her tats.

The dress, which had a finish reminiscent of snakeskin, featured plenty of punk-rock details, from its metallic sheen to its deep gray color to the stringy fabric holding the bodice together. We love that Courtney Love managed to look kind of, well, fabulous, without losing any of her 'tude.

Being a rocker doesn't mean you can't be glamorous - take a page out of Courtney's book and pick a frock with a little edge.

How to do an unexpected detail
31 May 2011

If you're looking for the perfect outfit for an upcoming summer event, you can't go wrong with the classics. Solid colors, tried-and-true silhouettes and simple accessories have stood the test of time for a reason - they're elegant, understated and ideal for almost any occasion. But hey, with summer almost here, you don't have to be quite so boring when it comes to dressing for a sweet soiree. Stick to the basics - but add a little intrigue with a well-placed detail. Let January Jones show you how it's done.

Jones, who is expecting her first child this autumn, looked as radiant as ever when she arrived in New York City for a taping of The Today Show, where she promoted her new film X-Men: First Class. Her dress was a deep shade of emerald green and was loose and flowy around the middle to make room for her growing baby bump. She kept things simple with a pair of nude sandals, some glamorous shades and a gold wristwatch. But what could have easily been a super-safe outfit took a turn for the wild side with a single detail - a webbed sleeve cascading over one shoulder.

The dress works because it's not overwhelming - our eyes get to feast on the unique sleeve without being distracted by a pattern or a bunch of ruffles and tulle. To make an amazing impression while still looking totally timeless, a detail like this is all you need.

Ruffles aren't just for floor-length gowns
31 May 2011

When you think of a ruffled dress, what kind of silhouette do you envision in your mind's eye? Long, trailing skirts may be the perfect canvas for a bunch of frilly details, but that's no reason to rule out the undeniably appealing flourish of a ruffled mini this summer.

Exhibit A is Jenna Dewan, who showed up to a Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution Party in Los Angeles in a glittering off-white ruffled mini, which wrapped around her torso in top bandeau bandage style and featured a soft asymmetrical silhouette toward the hem. This slight scalloped edge brought a bit of intrigue to her otherwise alluring ensemble, which she topped off with nude pumps and just a touch of bling.

This is one look that's sure to score big on the summer most wanted list for girls all over, as this is the perfect flirty cut to socialize away your most glamorous summer evenings in. Keeping the accessories minimal a-la-Miss-Jenna is highly recommended, as this is one look that tends to speak for itself.

The power of sheer
31 May 2011

Looking for a way to be sexy while still being modest? They don't have to be mutually exclusive - you really can be both! All it takes is a little trickery, thanks to some sheer detailing that'll have everyone ogling you - before realizing that you're actually completely covered! You'll leave everyone wanting more when you show up in a gorgeous gown with a few strategically-placed sheer additions.

Now, as with all trends, there's a right and wrong way to pull this off. Tiny strings held together by some seriously sheer - practically translucent - fabric? Not classy. Some stars have tried it out on the red carpet, but unless you're angling for a wardrobe malfunction, opting for a bit more of a covered-up look is actually a better way to grab the attention of everyone you pass. Have a look at the outfit Kirsten Dunst sported to Courtney Love’s performance during day three of Istancool in Turkey.

Her Chanel gown featured vintage white tiers and a sheer, beaded top that showed off nearly as much skin as a strapless dress would've - but with a little more intrigue.

Summer wedding dress trends
31 May 2011

Summer is wedding season, which means plenty of you - maybe even some of you without a ring on your finger (yet!) - are looking for the ideal gown to wear as you walk down the aisle. Surely you've got a vague idea shrouded in the color white, but do you want strapless? Mermaid hem? Long sleeves?

Of course, plenty of this season's wedding gowns will be inspired by Kate Middleton's gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress. The long-sleeved number was a perfect marriage of tradition and modernity (a bit like Will and Kate themselves, don't you think?). Expect plenty of designs featuring vintage details, lace and more modest silhouettes this summer - perfect if you're looking for a design that'll stand the test of time.

Another popular trend this year? Textured fabrics. Princess Kate may have contributed to this one, but more likely it's just an overall preference toward gowns that have a little more visual intrigue than the typical silk or taffeta fashions. Little details, like flowers and lace overlays, are all the rage, so look for a dress that's not just a treat to look at, but also a treat to touch. (Of course, paws off for everyone but you and your husband!)

The many ways to wear a floral sundress
31 May 2011

Little floral dresses go hand in hand with summer like a horse and carriage (or whatever analogy you're fond of these days). But just because you're bringing out last year's sundresses for another go this year doesn't mean you have to wear them like yesterday's garments.

Minka Kelly demonstrated this all too well when she stepped out on the streets of New York City wearing a soft white and gray floral mini, which she paired expertly with knee-length leather boots, an olive boyfriend cardigan and a beige scarf which hung loosely around her neck. She topped it off with a pair of sleek aviator sunglasses and gold hoop earrings to complete her city-slicker-meets-bohogirl look.

Minka's look is perfect for transitioning from spring to summer, but you don't have to keep your look totally under wraps to enjoy the many possibilities of layering in the summertime. Keep cool with a pair of gladiator sandals or peep-toe wedges, and feel free to layer on a light summer scarf if the weather permits it.

This summer, set a gold standard
24 May 2011

Now that the nights are getting warmer, it's imperative that you pull out all the stops when it comes to your evening wear. There's no reason not to express your wildest fashion urges, whether they're neon, metallic, animal-print, asymmetrical or slightly skewed altogether.

For this reason and so many more, it makes complete and utter sense to rock a gold lame dress like Katy Perry did at a recent event. The singer was truly a trophy to behold in a shiny metallic gold pencil number that featured a sweetheart bust and off-the-shoulder pleats and was completed oh-so-eloquently with a few embellished black vines creeping across her hem and her neckline. She paired it off with a pair of her favorite nude pumps and loose, flowing waves.

You don't have to go with quite such a structured silhouette if you're just planning on going out for a night on the town, but it's well worth taking note of this eye-catching material. You'll likely be working on turning yourself in to the ultimate bronzed goddess, so make your glow shine all the brighter in a dainty gold dress.

Skintight says it best
20 May 2011

We're all for dresses that feature elegant, loose-fitting silhouettes, but sometimes, a form-hugging frock really does say it best.

Jennifer Lawrence demonstrated this all too well in a scintillating navy blue number for her appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Lawrence wasn't afraid to show everyone what her mama gave her, as the spaghetti-strap dress hugged all of her curves in a most flattering way and featured an abstract hem that came up asymmetrically above her knee. Paired with a mustard hairline belt around her waist and black strappy pumps, Lawrence was dressed to kill with her new brunette locks.

If you've got an occasion on the horizon that will require you to look your very best, consider taking a stride in Jennifer's direction with a skintight dress. Remember - just because the fabric's tight doesn't mean you can't leave anything up to the imagination. Keep it classy with a knee-length hem or a modest neckline.

Have you channeled your inner fairy princess as of late?
20 May 2011

Just because you need to exude urban, mature sophistication doesn't mean you can't channel your inner child all at the same time, and if ever there were a person to demonstrate this delicate balance, Kristen Bell pulled it off with flying colors.

At least, that's what the cotton candy pink and blue layers on her dress seemed to do. Bell showed up to the Los Angeles premiere of The Hangover 2 in a flighty pastel one-shouldered mini that featured a structured bust and a sweetheart neckline and a layer of sheer blue tulle layered asymmetrically on top. She paired her floaty confection with a pair of strappy nude sandals and loose, flowing tresses.

Ladies with an eye toward the fantastical may want to channel their own Tinkerbell at their next formal event. You can pull off a cute, frothy number like Bell's without completely upstaging the bride (or anyone else who may be the center of attention). Just keep your hair and makeup easy and casual, and you'll be the picture of elegant charm.

An all-new detail
20 May 2011

It's not all that often that we get to bring a truly unique fashion innovation to your attention, but the Miu Miu dress that Hollywood newcomer Eve Hewson sported in Cannes earlier this week really did have us in awe! Although neckline detailing is old hat (er, old collar?), we love this modern update that created a one-of-a-kind look, and we hope that Hewson can inspire our readers to go out and look for a dress that's just as innovative as this one.

Hewson attended the photocall for her film This Must Be The Place with Sean Penn, and she stole the spotlight from the actor in this green, black and white star-print silk dress. But what really made this look unique was the leather yoking at the collar, which featured lime-green leather in an intricate pattern across her decolletage. To add another pop of spring color, Hewson paired her frock with a pair of amethyst purple pumps.

We love everything about this look - from the unique detailing, the springtime pattern and the bright colors to the casual hairstyle and simple makeup. So get out there and find a look that's just as girly and pretty to sport to springtime weddings and summer evening soirees.

Springtime neutrals
19 May 2011

You don't need color to feel like it's spring - just ask Coleen Rooney, wife of soccer player (er, footballer) Wayne Rooney. Coleen recently stepped out in an ensemble that felt undeniably ready for the most colorful month of the year - and yet, with not a single color to be found!

Coleen's Azzedine Alaia Asteride knit dress was a subtle shade of dove grey,rc but featured plenty of interesting detail, along with a summery sleeveless neckline and a short hemline that showed off her beautiful legs. She paired the neutral dress with equally neutral accents - a quilted beige clutch and a pair of camel platform pumps. As for jewelry, all she added was a pair of white pearl earrings - a totally classic choice to match her understated accessories. With her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail, Coleen was the picture of effortless chic.

Maybe it's the way the colors remind us of sky and sand, or maybe it's just because of her beautiful tan, but there's no denying that Coleen was springtime fab in this get-up.

As Mrs. Rooney proves, there's no need to go crazy with color if you want to look summery this season. Sometimes, a fun fabric, a flirty cut or some gorgeous accessories are all you need to hit the town on a warm spring day.

Kate Middleton's dress already inspiring red carpet looks
19 May 2011

Thought that the Kate Middleton wedding dress knock-offs would be restricted to the bridal boutiques? Think again - newly-minted Princess Catherine's gown is inspiring formal looks for all occasions. With its timeless silhouette, elegant style and effortless grace, it's no wonder that celebs and regular folks of all stripes are racing to find gowns that incorporate all of the glamor of Kate's famous dress. The latest star to emulate Britain's newest royal is Penelope Cruz, who attended the Madrid premiere of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment in a black gown that looked strikingly similar to the Alexander McQueen creation Kate wore.

Cruz's Armani Privé gown came in a deep black hue, which helped keep it distinct from the dress it was bound to inspire comparisons to. It featured the same long embroidered-lace sleeves, sheer décolletage and elegant train that Kate's dress had, but showed off a much more daring neckline that plunged well into Cruz's impressive cleavage. (If only we could all be so lucky!) With a simple updo, classic makeup and nothing but a pair of drop earrings, Cruz looked absolutely stunning on the red carpet.

Whether you're a bride-to-be or just attending a fun formal event, let Kate's wedding dress inspire you, too! Look for lace details, long sleeves, trains and fitted bodices for a gown that'll have you feeling like a queen.

Brooklyn the buttercup
19 May 2011

Forget trees growing in Brooklyn - there's a whole lot that's coming up buttercups in the world of Brooklyn Decker, who looked amazing in a shiny yellow mini at the launch of myhabit.com in New York City.

The model was a burst of sunshine in the bright tank mini, which featured a fitted bodice and a full-bodied skirt which accentuated her hips and ended at a daringly high height above her knees. Paired with black peep-toe ankle boots and a black statement necklace, Decker was expertly put together and was everything a party girl could hope to emulate.

Decker's example is perfect inspiration for any lady getting ready for a big occasion or just a special night on the town. This effortlessly simple aesthetic bodes well for major public appearances and fine dining alike, and it transitions well into any dancing you might be doing well into the night. Let bold, monochrome accessories and bright, solid colors be your guide as you outfit yourself for your next big event.

Tulip skirts are bound to dazzle
18 May 2011

The old blouse and skirt layering trick just got a bit more exciting, thanks to Brooklyn Decker's vibrant display of how fun mixing and matching is when you've got a playful metallic tulip skirt to play around with.

Decker showed up to UNICEF's Playlist with the A-list event in Los Angeles wearing a light blue denim button-down collared shirt, paired with a short metallic pewter skirt which highlighted her trim figure and poofed up at the hips in petal-like fashion. Paired with hoop earrings and black satin mary jane heels, Decker was the picture of a style-savvy party girl who knows how to mix sexy and casual to a T.

Tulip skirts are a great layering item and a must-have in any lady's closet, thanks to their undeniable appeal and flirty shape. You can keep the accessories casual and fairly minimal like our friend Brooklyn, or jazz up an already-shiny skirt with a few items of statement bling - as long as they're not taking the attention away from the real attention-grabber. Next time you've got a big event on the horizon, let your skirt steal the show and pair it with a contrasting top for maximum impact and sophistication.

Fergie's gone back to the future
18 May 2011

It looks like Lady Gaga may have some competition these days in the department of outlandish, other-worldly style choices. Fergie stepped out looking rather space-age in Paris recently, and the result was not altogether uninspiring for worldly fashionistas.

The Black Eyed Peas starlet looked glam as usual in a cobalt blue sharp-shouldered top and an overstated black mini that was, for lack of better words, shaped like some sort of sexy alien tutu pod. With the skirt creating quite a stark contrast between her waist and hips, she followed suit with a pair of black tights, buckle-tipped shoes and aviator sunglasses to complete the look.

Ladies with a social event on the horizon may be hard-pressed to find an exact replica of this skirt (or anything close to it, for that matter), but Fergie's look is style inspiration for those who just won't settle for ordinary. Look for exaggerated features, gravity-defying silhouettes and outlandish properties to break new fashion territory whenever you go out on the town.

Retro is in
17 May 2011

Everything old is new again this summer, with retro trends coming back in a big way. There's no better way to enjoy a family picnic or a summer wedding than a sweetly retro dress that channels everything we loved about the '60s, '50s and beyond. Retro styles come in a huge variety, from floral prints to rompers to platform wedges, but no one made this look work better for them than Cheryl Cole, who attended the 2011 Fox Upfront Event in New York this week.

The British singer made a real splash in a bright orange Giambattista Valli short sleeve dress that offered a delightful pop of summertime color. The dress' short sleeves, cinched waist, modest hemline and high boat neck all had an air of the '50s about them, and when Cole stuck her hands into a pair of perfect pockets, the effect was complete. Paired with simple makeup and soft cascading waves parted to one side, she was the picture of retro glam.

To keep her look uniform, Cole smartly accessorized with equally retro jewels - a pearl choker, as well as a pair of white leather peep-toes.

Girls just wanna have fun
17 May 2011

Before you rest on the assumption that the styles of the '80s have finally been laid to rest, they come right back up again in new and enticing ways. This just goes to show that even the dresses that contributed to some rather embarrassing prom photos can be reinvented in a way that's oh-so-fabulous.

The prime example of this phenomenon is Zooey Deschanel, who showed up to promote her new show, "The New Girl," in New York City. Zooey was a radiant burst of color in a candy pink tiered taffeta dress, which she paired with black tights and shoes and a black belt with a rhinestone-embellished buckle. The look incorporated everything we love about the '80s but without the overwhelming and unflattering layers of fabric - instead, she kept it classy with just a bit of volume in her skirt and a sleeveless, figure-hugging bodice.

If you're getting ready for a night on the town, don't be afraid to complete your mother's worst nightmare by glamming it up in a bouncy number like Zooey's and even throwing an elegant scrunchie into the mix. Remember - flirty, not frumpy.

Rock out in high rockabilly style
17 May 2011

Getting dressed up for a night on the town is a fun enough affair on its own, but you don't have to take things too seriously if you're in the mood for a vintage throwback. Hearkening back to bygone days is a fun and fashionable way to show off your style know-how, and you can update retro looks with a modern sensibility that's sure to grace you with more than just second glances.

Lake Bell showed us all how fun a rockabilly style is at Lyn Devon's new wardrobe launch in New York City. Bell likely stopped a bit of traffic in a cherry red sleeveless mini, the top of which was polka-dotted with black shiny beads. To complete the look, Bell wore camel-colored sandals and a high pony with a bouffant.

Classic example of mixing the old with the new? We can definitely attribute Bell's hairstyle and the edgy polka-dotted fashion to times of yore, but her choice of shoes and the modern, streamlined silhouette of her dress made her very much of a fixture of today's trending looks.

Next time you're getting ready for a big appearance, don't be afraid to borrow elements from your favorite timeline to piece together a look that's uniquely you.

Be a star
16 May 2011

It hasn't been an easy road for Britney Spears these past few years. The one-time superstar has continued to make music and perform, but her personal life has been plagued by scandals, rumors and family problems. Like most child stars, Britney has had a rough transition to adulthood, but like the true fans we are, we have faith that she can turn it around and return to glory. If the dress she wore in this month's issue of Harper's Bazaar is any indication, she agrees.

Like a true diva, Britney went with a dress that shows she's a star - literally. The Dolce & Gabbana creation was decked out in dozens of white stars against a gorgeous sheer black backdrop that billowed around the singer in the breeze. Although the dress featured a high neck and long sleeves, it was anything but modest with a daring slit that showed off the dancer's incredibly toned legs and a pair of super pricey pumps.

A unique pattern - like stars - is the perfect way to stand out at an upcoming formal event. Brit's never been one to blend in, so take a page out of her book (or magazine) and pick out something that's truly one-of-a-kind. You'll be sure to be the talk of the night!

Channel your inner swan for prom
16 May 2011

You don't have to be an ugly duckling to emerge as a beautiful swan at your prom. There are innumerable ways to interpret this, of course, but we're fascinated by the idea of dressing up in a regal white feathered gown, like Uma Thurman so fabulously did at the Cannes Film Festival.

Thurman was at her best in a white strapless Versace gown that featured a sweetheart neckline and a structured bust as well as a graceful center slit and a long, feathered train. On Thurman's pale, already bird-like physique, the dress looked positively stunning, and she certainly knew what she was doing when she accessorized with some emerald green jewelry.

Thurman may have a rather enviable body, but girls of all shapes and sizes can easily pull off this silhouette, which is almost universally flattering and is an instant ticket to glamour for all. Depending on how daring you're feeling, you can feel free to skip the slit, but this is an excellent way to show off your gams while still retaining an elegant veneer.

Prom dresses fit for a princess
14 May 2011

The schoolyear is winding down, which means it's just about time for everyone's favorite night - prom. Many gals dream of descending the stairs in a floating ball gown straight out of a fairy tale, and there's no better time than prom night to make that fantasy a reality. Prom is no time for subtlety, so throw caution to the wind and go ahead - get that flirty princess gown you've been hoping for since you were a little girl.

You won't be the only one indulging royal fantasies. Israeli socialite Hofit Golan decided to go all-out at the Cannes Film Festival in southern France this week in a gorgeous fuchsia dress that featured a strapless sweetheart neckline, a flowing floor-length hem and a big bow on the back to tie it all together. She showed off her collarbones with a casual yet chic updo, and accessorized her dreamy dress with a diamond bracelet fit for a queen.

What made this gown truly special, however, was its multi-toned design. Despite being a solid color, the dress alternated between different shimmering shades of magenta thanks to its unique fabric and tight bodice.

If you think prom might be the night when you meet your Prince Charming, best to dress like royalty, right?

A single shoulder is all you need
11 May 2011

Who needs two straps when one will do?

One-shouldered gowns are all the rage this season, and with good reason - they're glamorous, stylish and modern, all at once. The asymmetrical look is flattering on almost any figure, and the single bare shoulder is a sexy little twist that shows just enough skin to be modest yet undeniably alluring.

Aishwarya Rai showed us one way to pull off this style with the Elie Saab Spring 2011 Couture gown she wore at the Opening Ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival. The gorgeous dress had a vintage feel to it with its sepia-toned lace, long train and cinched waist, but the single-shouldered detail kept things feeling fresh. The Bollywood beauty looked truly stunning against the gorgeous Cannes backdrop of sun, sand and surf.

Paired with diamond jewels and a champagne clutch, Rai's neutral look was anything but plain.

For your next formal event, consider a gown with just one shoulder - you're guaranteed to feel sexy!

It's coming up roses this prom season
10 May 2011

Every girl dreams of wearing a corsage on her wrist, but there's no reason not to think outside the box when it comes to decking yourself out in florals for prom. Many ladies wear flowers in their hair, adorn themselves in floral jewelry and even choose dresses that are popping with little blooms and blossoms.

In case you thought that you needed to look frilly or flouncy to rock a floral-inspired gown, take note of the classy interpretation worn by Keira Knightley for her guest spot on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in New York City. Knightley looked every bit the modern adaptation of a 1920s goddess in a beige Valentino halter dress spotted with curly-cue shaped rosettes and spirals. The sheer, delicate fabric and the color contrast between the top and bottom half of her attire ensured that her look stayed fresh and interesting while timelessly feminine and elegant.

You can be a real flower at prom this year, no matter if you choose a dress with a floral textured fabric or one large, painterly print. No matter how you choose to swing it, keep the attention focused on you with a touch of rosy blush and a bright, warm pout.

White as snow for summertime
10 May 2011

Summertime is almost here, which means a special color is back in style - white! Whether it's ivory, cream, grey, ecru or any other shade, white is ideal for summer dresses because it's light, airy, feminine and clean - just like the season. If you're heading to a formal event this summer, white could be just the color for you if you want to look crisp, fresh and youthful.

For a fun way to wear this summertime staple, have a gander at what Lake Bell donned at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival Premiere for A Good Old Fashioned Orgy. The comedienne picked a gorgeous yet flirty fitted Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2011 dress in a beautiful shade of white as bright as a daisy's petal! In fact, the dress' distinct fold detail running diagonally from shoulder to hip did remind us just a bit of a blooming flower.

Bell kept things earthy with a leather clutch and a pair of strappy tan heels.

To stay out of bridal territory when wearing white this spring, look for dresses with unique silhouettes and short hems that show off your legs.

Every girl has feathers to flaunt
09 May 2011

They say birds of a feather flock together, but what's a girl to do when it's her time to shine? This prom, the sky's the limit as you fan your wings to express your most vibrant display of charm and allure.

It's safe to say that no one knows this better than Penelope Cruz, who wore a sexy black off-the-shoulder Marchesa gown to the Los Angeles premiere of the new Pirates of the Caribbean flick. Amid the 70 carats worth of Chopard diamonds that were scattered all over her svelte physique were trains of black glamorous feathers that adorned her neckline and the train of her gown, feathering off, if you will, into a mermaid hem.

Of course, you don't have to go to a jeweler just to channel your inner Spanish goddess. Feathered dresses can take on a menagerie of styles and variations (just think of Bjork's iconic swan dress, and you'll know what we mean).

Perhaps all of this is an idea that's better suited for the birds - if that's the case, don't forget to consider slightly more toned down options, such as opting for a feather hair accessory, necklace or earrings. No matter what you choose, your first priority is always and forever shaking that tail feather on the dance floor.

The Middletons show us how to wear a wrap dress
09 May 2011

Thought wraps were just for robes? Think again. The Middleton gals - newly minted Princess Kate and her beautiful sister Pippa - have truly made this fashion staple their own, and with a few tips and tricks, you too can look like a queen-to-be in this universally flattering silhouette.

No matter your build - slight or busty, thin or thick, tiny or tall - a wrap dress can work for you. Because wrap dresses don't have zippers or buttons, they can be adjusted to highlight your unique figure. Tighten them up to cover a large bust, or leave them a little loose to let your cleavage peek out. Depending on your preference, you can also find wrap dresses with short or long sleeves, mini hems or floor-grazing trains and just about anything else.

Pippa herself has been seen in a lavender wrap dress she paired with springy espadrilles and a white purse, as well as a unique puffy-sleeved number featuring a black and white print. Kate wore a sapphire blue wrap-style dress (although it didn't actually have a sash that we could see) in the famous engagement photos of her and Prince William.

Best of all, you can wear a wrap to both formal and casual events! Dress them down with flip-flops and a tote, or dress them up with a sparkling necklace, a pair of pumps and a shiny clutch.

Blake Lively dazzles in Chanel
09 May 2011

Easter may be behind us, but not everybody was so quick to forget about lambs, bunnies and other white, fluffy symbols of spring - Blake Lively channeled everything that's puffy and bright in a gorgeous Chanel number at a dinner party honoring the house's designer, Karl Lagerfeld.

And boy, it's really undeniable that the Gossip Girl actress knows how to pull off just about any outfit. The Spring 2010 dress - which might have been overwhelming on anybody less confident - featured a high hemline, which let Blake show off her impressive legs. The low neckline showed off plenty of decolletage, but Blake kept things modest with big, ruffled sleeves that ended just above her elbows. Plus, with a cinched ribbon at the waist, she left no doubt about her fit figure!

Blake's look is a great example of how some serious self-confidence can help you make any look your own. If you're considering something bold and unique for your next formal event, don't shy away from it - embrace it wholeheartedly! Blake kept her jewelry simple and let the dress do the talking, which is always a good idea if you're going with something truly one-of-a-kind. But don't let the dress drown you out - you'll need a charming personality to match such a winning ensemble.

Kate Middleton wedding dress spin-offs already appearing
06 May 2011

Kate Middleton married her real-life Prince Charming, Prince William of Wales, last week in a dress that was truly fit for a fairy tale. The gorgeous Alexander McQueen number, designed by Sarah Burton, was the perfect marriage (excuse the pun) of modern and traditional. Modest yet sexy, the dress featured a plunging "V" neckline with long lace sleeves and a seven-foot train that stretched long behind Kate as she walked down the aisle.

It's no surprise, then, that brides on both sides of the pond are clamoring for dresses like Kate's. In fact, Kate's dress could influence wedding fashion not just in 2011, but for years or even decades to come, say wedding fashion experts. Luckily, you don't have to be royalty to dress like the future queen of England.

Designs inspired by the royal gown are already hitting boutiques throughout America. Michelle and Henry Roth, designers who sell exclusively for New York's Kleinfeld Bridal Salon, the largest wedding boutique in the country, have already launched a dress inspired by the royal gown they call "The Kate." They started sewing and cutting almost immediately after the dress debuted, and they expect their version to be a huge seller, reports ABC News.

If you're getting married this year - or next year, or even beyond - chances are, you'll see a dress inspired by Kate's somewhere on the rack.

Old Hollywood, updated
06 May 2011

When you think of a '50s-style pin-up, do you think of an actual '50s pin-up, or do you think of Dita von Teese? We're willing to bet at least half of you (especially you younger gals!) thought of Dita first. In fact, Dita is sort of like a modern-day incarnation of Old Hollywood glamour - and her fashion reflects that. Just have a look at the drop-dead gorgeous dress she sported leaving The Wendy Williams Show yesterday in New York City.

Dita was red-hot in a monochromatic outfit featuring a crimson dress, scarlet shoes and her trademark rouge lipstick. Paired with some retro-inspired sunglasses and a beautiful floral brooch, Dita's look was anything but boring. The skin-tight dress featured a vintage cut, with a deep v-neck that showed plenty of cleavage and some seriously retro cap sleeves. The gown was the perfect signature look for Dita, but still kept things modern with its bold color, sexy neckline and deep slit up the back.

Let Dita inspire you as your shop for your next formal dress. Look for something inspired by the glamour and richness of Old Hollywood, and let retro trends guide your jewelry, hair and shoe choices, too.

Frocks with pockets
06 May 2011

Tired of having to take your purse with you every time you attend a formal event? Looking for a way to store your lipstick and credit card without having to carry along a clutch? Well, spring has just the trend for you - dresses with pockets.

Alright, so stuffing your cell phone in your dress pocket isn't always practical. But even if you come with your trustworthy old clutch, having a pair of pockets on your gown is all the rage these days. Walking around with a glass of champagne in one hand and your other hand in your pocket is as classy as it gets, and you'll never look more feminine than when you're standing with your fingers at the edges of your dress' pockets. Whether you opt for two pockets by your hips, a single waist pocket or a pocket on your chest, you really can't go wrong - even if you go for all three styles, like Louise Redknapp did.

The U.K. "So You Think You Can Dance" judge stepped out in London in a gorgeous fuchsia dress with three pockets - two at the waist and one by the bust. This simple and fresh look was casual and formal at the same time - perfect for a night out on the town!

A new way to do floral
05 May 2011

Floral prints are always in for spring, but the same old patterns can get boring quickly. If you're not interested in attending your next formal event in a dress that looks like it was cut out of your grandma's curtains, there are plenty of fresh, fun and modern ways to make floral-inspired designs work for you. For the most elegant and sophisticated take on this trend, have a look at what Lea Michele wore to the Glee Academy Screening and Q&A in Hollywood, California, yesterday.

Lea always looks fresh-faced and bright on Glee, and her red carpet style is no exception. She's known for her feminine and floaty red carpet style, but this gorgeous Versace creation was more subtle than many of her previous looks. The dress was a unique take on spring trends because, although featuring floral detail, it was done in black and white rather than the traditional springtime hues.

The stunning frock featured a daring slit, a one-shouldered neckline and a stylized tulip detail across the chest - the perfect marriage of flirty spring trends and classic Old Hollywood glamor.

If you're looking for a way to update the styles of spring, take a page out of Lea's book and go for a look that makes florals feel modern and elegant.

Bold colors are in!
05 May 2011

Think the only colors you can wear to a formal night out are black, cream and white? Think again. The stars don't shy away from some of the brightest and boldest hues on the color wheel, and neither should you! If you're ready to make a statement at your next formal event, consider picking a gown in an unorthodox color that'll make ROY G. BIV wonder where you found it.

For inspiration, have a look at what Eva Mendes wore to the AMPAS Tribute to Sophia Loren, held at the AMPAS Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills last night. The stunning actress went with a dress that was almost as show-stopping as her figure - an electric green Oscar de la Renta number that highlighted her small waist while offering a modest neckline. The dress went down the runway with a skinny black belt, but Eva decided to leave it off - and looked just fine without it.

Bright colors work on every skin tone, so whether you're dark or fair, you can pull off vibrant hues this spring. Blonde gals will look best in light colors like blue, pink and yellow, while gals with a darker complexion can rock orange, red, purple and other deep shades.
